It's time to hit the woodshed again. Let me know in the comments what you've been working on and I'll be sharing more videos like this if you enjoy this sort of thing 🙂I had the Kemper dialled in with the Edge tone to get the vibe going! 😎 Edit: By the way - TAB is basically backwards for me!

Nice choice, one of my favourite U2 songs. Can remember the film clip of them in the snow. Love the Red Rocks concert.

I got like a book for Christmas. It’s It’s full of a bunch of all kinds of songs mostly tab some of it not I have to work it out. I got a little book. I can write in that. I can put it down in if it’s not tab, I’m just lazy about that. If it doesn’t have the tab, I don’t wanna mess with it.

I’m watching the usual suspects: Jedd Hughes, Adam Levy, Eric Haugen, Jim Campilongo, you, and stealing shamelessly. Trying to learn melodies I know in various ways. At best it’s like Bill Frisell on pain pills wearing work gloves.

This is a good video - the actual steps of learning something (grind grind grind grind) are often lost on new guitar players and they end up feeling like they just aren’t making progress and get discouraged.
    Thank you for sharing.

Good to see something real on YT, someone playing a song rather than a couple of licks then patting themselves on the back. If its recognisable play it your way make it yours. Enjoy the channel. Im just getting back into it after a long time. Its amazing the gear available these days.

Learnt this back in the day off the record with my first delay pedal, an Ibanez AD9. The riff in "Gloria" is another one your timing has to be on point.

Thanks Shane. I play in a rock cover band, and I spend a lot of time doing this exact thing. It's one thing to learn the notes, but another to add the nuances of the style, the right effects, etc. You captures that effort really well. Love the channel, and looking for ward to more of these in 2025.

That was fun. Watching you learn something from scratch helps in realising guitar isn't just pick up and play anything. It takes work, no matter what level the guitarist is at.
    Very entertaining.
    Cheers!
Edit: Ive finally got the courage up to tackle Comfortably Numb, I got parts 1&2 memorised but that last run is proving difficult to say the least.

Good video idea and a nice change from the gear reviews. I think the trick to that solo is getting all of the timing right as the Edge is sliding into many of those notes. I thought you might have a heavier pick attack then the Edge, but he may also be just sliding into some of the notes, with the picking at the start, especially with the high notes at the beginning on the high E. I only know the classical term for it, which is glissade. It sounds good though!

First off good work and yeh I wouldn't mind more content like this.
I would argue that if a piece of music isn't adjacent to anything in your current tonal/rhythm language (comfort zone) it's gonna be harder to wrap your head around regardless of the level of technique needed to some extent. Music is a endless sea of fun and exploration, there is always "terra incognita" on a recording or stage out there for us to discover/rediscover.
    Peace

tasty solo that's really the only reason i listen to that song, because it's not otherwise one of my fave u2 songs. You should have put on a beanie, since there is more than a passing resemblance between you and Edge, just look that the thumbnail :)

It's amazing to me how much we are shaped by our influences. Jazz and all this eighties delay based stuff is like sleepwalking for me but trying and get plectrum based Gilbert or Yngwie Malmsteen solos is like climbing Everest. Look up "Bill Bailey and the Edge" on the youtubes. Very funny.

it's right around the 1 hour mark of learning something new, and then trying to record it at the end, so it's not going to be perfect until I play it some more. I can't remember which pickup I used sorry. It's probably the bridge pickup as I used that for jam section.

I’ve conquered some of my most favourite solos of all time in 2024 like Comfortably Numb, Parisienne Walkways, Sultans of Swing,Free Bird, etc. but the one that still eludes me is ‘Symphony of Destruction’ by Megadeth. Love that solo. But I’m just not there yet

Beato had a video t a few weeks back and this was one of the underrated solos and when I saw Rick playing it I was like I can learn that, and a few hours and I good night sleep and I had it. I prefer to do the walk down on just the high E and not between the E and B as I find it a bit easier as well.

Are you done doing inexpensive pedal reviews? Joyo, Caline etc... That is what got me hooked on your channel. I just recently got 2 pedals which are pretty darn good ... the Joyo Bright Day OD & the Tiny Huge Fuzz both are pretty darn good. I loved listening to you play and review pedals it helped me make decisions. Thanks!

I don't do as many nowadays because I've kind of covered hundreds of them over the years. Check out my Gokko pedal video, it had about 8 in there from their current range. I also cover a lot of the inexpensive multi-effects pedals from Sonicake etc.

I’m a lefty and I can’t learn watching somebody play. I have to have the tab and if you look a tablet or to me it looks like it’s written for a left-handed person course the first 50 times I played it never sounds right then all of a sudden it just falls in line.

Simple is not the same as easy, is it?! 😂 I’ve just been sorting out one ‘simple’ riff - Look through any window by the Hollies - and had hells’ own job for some reason, possibly because I had to re-key the song to sing it, and had to play the riff in a different place, but what is essentially quite an simple riff took me about 3 days, on and off, to finally get right, at the right tempo!! 😮😊

What I find really challenging is learning stuff by heart on the guitar. I have no problem memorizing big chunks of text. But guitar parts? Nah. I feel totally stupid 😂

    • @shanetx81
      @shanetx81 21 день назад +1

Likewise. I can play a lot off sheet, or tabs, but when it comes to memorizing it slips away sometimes. I think it’s just a muscle that I let languish too long and now have to really work on.
