This is a good video - the actual steps of learning something (grind grind grind grind) are often lost on new guitar players and they end up feeling like they just aren’t making progress and get discouraged. Thank you for sharing.
It's time to hit the woodshed again. Let me know in the comments what you've been working on and I'll be sharing more videos like this if you enjoy this sort of thing 🙂I had the Kemper dialled in with the Edge tone to get the vibe going! 😎 Edit: By the way - TAB is basically backwards for me!
I got like a book for Christmas. It’s It’s full of a bunch of all kinds of songs mostly tab some of it not I have to work it out. I got a little book. I can write in that. I can put it down in if it’s not tab, I’m just lazy about that. If it doesn’t have the tab, I don’t wanna mess with it.
I really know that "GAH!" feeling when your fretting finger insists on being wrong! It's been 4 years now since I've picked up electric guitar and my ear is finally developed enough to let me know I still suck! Happy New Year to you and yours, Shane! Fun lesson!
That solo bit reminds me a little bit of the end solo portion of Journey's "Send Her My Love". BTW Shane, I bought the Lefty Zack Meyers guitar based on your video, it's beautiful.
@intheblues Thank you. I can't play it just yet because I had surgery on my right middle finger (torn tendon). But once I heal up, I'm going to play it A LOT. Thank you for your videos. I'm right handed but play lefty, and I enjoy your lefty inputs.
Learnt this back in the day off the record with my first delay pedal, an Ibanez AD9. The riff in "Gloria" is another one your timing has to be on point.
Nice to see how the omelette is made in your kitchen. Not enough people are willing to show the how...just the results. Cutting edge Shane. (pun was accidental...at first)
That was fun. Watching you learn something from scratch helps in realising guitar isn't just pick up and play anything. It takes work, no matter what level the guitarist is at. Very entertaining. Cheers! Edit: Ive finally got the courage up to tackle Comfortably Numb, I got parts 1&2 memorised but that last run is proving difficult to say the least.
The hardest part about learning is just to play slow and steady, then come up to speed. Thanks Shane for inviting us into to the process.. The Edge always uses alot of processing with DELAY. KEEP up the great work.😂🎉
First off good work and yeh I wouldn't mind more content like this. I would argue that if a piece of music isn't adjacent to anything in your current tonal/rhythm language (comfort zone) it's gonna be harder to wrap your head around regardless of the level of technique needed to some extent. Music is a endless sea of fun and exploration, there is always "terra incognita" on a recording or stage out there for us to discover/rediscover. Peace
Good video idea and a nice change from the gear reviews. I think the trick to that solo is getting all of the timing right as the Edge is sliding into many of those notes. I thought you might have a heavier pick attack then the Edge, but he may also be just sliding into some of the notes, with the picking at the start, especially with the high notes at the beginning on the high E. I only know the classical term for it, which is glissade. It sounds good though!
I’m a lefty and I can’t learn watching somebody play. I have to have the tab and if you look a tablet or to me it looks like it’s written for a left-handed person course the first 50 times I played it never sounds right then all of a sudden it just falls in line.
It's amazing to me how much we are shaped by our influences. Jazz and all this eighties delay based stuff is like sleepwalking for me but trying and get plectrum based Gilbert or Yngwie Malmsteen solos is like climbing Everest. Look up "Bill Bailey and the Edge" on the youtubes. Very funny.
I’ve conquered some of my most favourite solos of all time in 2024 like Comfortably Numb, Parisienne Walkways, Sultans of Swing,Free Bird, etc. but the one that still eludes me is ‘Symphony of Destruction’ by Megadeth. Love that solo. But I’m just not there yet
What I find really challenging is learning stuff by heart on the guitar. I have no problem memorizing big chunks of text. But guitar parts? Nah. I feel totally stupid 😂
Likewise. I can play a lot off sheet, or tabs, but when it comes to memorizing it slips away sometimes. I think it’s just a muscle that I let languish too long and now have to really work on.
I was playing that 1 back in the 80s, it was reasonably straight forward inc the piano melody, but WASN'T simple either! 1 of The Edge's better guitar pieces! Back when U2 was GREAT! \m/
Beato had a video t a few weeks back and this was one of the underrated solos and when I saw Rick playing it I was like I can learn that, and a few hours and I good night sleep and I had it. I prefer to do the walk down on just the high E and not between the E and B as I find it a bit easier as well.
Simple is not the same as easy, is it?! 😂 I’ve just been sorting out one ‘simple’ riff - Look through any window by the Hollies - and had hells’ own job for some reason, possibly because I had to re-key the song to sing it, and had to play the riff in a different place, but what is essentially quite an simple riff took me about 3 days, on and off, to finally get right, at the right tempo!! 😮😊
Supposedly it was a nickname given to him by a street gang because he has a strange head shape. But carry on. I’m also prone to dismiss bands for ridiculous reasons!

Great to see you taking yourself out of your comfort. Zone, it gives everyone a good watch.

Nice choice, one of my favourite U2 songs. Can remember the film clip of them in the snow. Love the Red Rocks concert.

Man, that was great. Way better than a gear review. Thanks!
Thanks, Matti 🙂
Dig it sooo much! Great work ❤
I learned the Purple Haze solo, my first solo I learned, and about a month after learning it I forgot it and had to learn it again, LOL!

Congrats on the guitar, those are so good! Well done 🙂

This is an awesome new idea. Would be great if you included the tab as well.

Good job ! I'm working on a couple of songs. I've slowed the speed on the track, and it makes it easier. 😊
Great video, not a huge U2 fan( they have some great songs though), but really enjoyed watching you learn this.

Love New Years Day. I will learn this with my week off work.

The key to doing this right (other than the effects settings) is the slides. They aren't difficult, but they are essential to getting it right.
This was Fun! Happy New Year!! 🍻
You kinda look like The Edge Shane, love his unique style and of course your blusey rock playing! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Love this!

I worshiped the Under the Blood Red Sky Album. I played SUnday BLoody Sunday live once.
Also DON'T forget Shane, U2 tuned down 1 semitone!

If you can hear the part in your head it becomes a lot easier to remember. 🙂

Most great guitar solos aren't difficult but have memorable melodies
Can you post the tab for us to follow Shane? ¡¥¡

Not a fan of U2 but they were quite good in the 1980s. After that it's pure marketing.
You really should have saved this video for 1 January. Just sayin’. 😁
haha! Yeah you might be right.
Never been a fan of U2. Any guitarist that’s pretentious enough to call themselves “The Edge” aren’t worth my time.
Supposedly it was a nickname given to him by a street gang because he has a strange head shape. But carry on. I’m also prone to dismiss bands for ridiculous reasons!
You actually kinda look like the edge too. Maybe time for a cover band lol.
😂 haha
