Love a manual transmission. When I was 16 had a jeep w manual and remember turning engine off softly gliding into my parents driveway. Thinking about getting one of these for a Sunday driver
I bought a 23 6 speed 3 Hot Hatch over a year ago and absolutely ♥️ the car! My first Mazda and as I’ve driven the 3 for over a year now I’ve come to realize what I knew before I bought the 3! I don’t need back seats! I’ve always wanted a real 2 seater coupe, but the Miata is so damn small and light! To drive this car daily in the Midwest isn’t always an option as I got my 3 stuck in a snow drift in -40 degree weather. NOT FUN! I feel like midwesterners that have to worry about snowy drives should have a bigger second car to rough through the snow, then Miata all the rest of the time!!! 😁
I appreciate the slightly different approach to this MX-5 review, as a daily driver, measuring interior noise and discussing reliability (plus, "Jess, have you used your crotch lately?"). That Mazda has continued producing this small, lightweight, fun-to-drive car says good things about the company.
I've considered both, and both are excellent driving cars. The Mazda 3 is the more practical car, especially the sedan version. I like the hatchback version. It's so sporty, but the blind spot is for real. You'll appreciate the blindspot monitoring feature there. The MIata is a niche car, and you'll have to accept it for what it is. It is small, has limited cargo space, and doesn't come in AWD, unlike the Mazda 3. It is the more fun car to toss around.
I have both: 23' Miata (Soft top, GT, manual) and 22' HB turbo. Bought the Mazda3 first, Miata last October. Great combo. Live in the Northeast US and the turbo handles all weather seemingly better than the AWD CR-V'S and rav-4s that I'm constantly blowing past during rain storms and snow. Since late March I've been using the Miata for fun drives and daily tasks whenever it's not raining and whenever the construction companies nearby haven't left a mountain of red dirt on the roads. And every other day the Mazda3 is a great vehicle that I know will just get me and whatever I need to carry wherever I need to go, without fuss, and with a reasonable amount of fun and dynamics. Cons are I only have garage space for the Miata (both cars get to be inside only when the roommate is out of town), and I do have to do a bit of a car shuffle in the driveway to get the Miata out. I've needed to wax the 3 for a while now and only tonight will I have the chance. While I WFH, I'm in a small city and MPG on the turbo is not great. Pro is I can't get below 32mpg average in the Miata even if I'm taking it on spirited drives through the woods (just driving around on the freeways I'm getting high 30's low 40's). I love my turbo and it's more than practical enough for anything I've ever needed (even loaded up with three other adults, plenty of home Depot runs for mulch and seed, even a lawnmower). But if I had known I was going to move to a city, and rent a house with garage space to both work on and store my Miata through the winter I'd maybe have hung into my 2011 Mazda3 sedan (also practical enough) for a few more years despite it starting to feel the corrosive northeast and down on power. Or maybe a slightly used hybrid of some kind. Of course I say this sitting at my desk, but I know if I hated driving my daily I'd be miserable. Unless you're buying a Mazdaspeed3, hacking up and modding a non-speed manual 3, or your first car has NO fun dynamics of any kind it's a bit too practical to be a dedicated fun second car. It works great as a fun, practical, all-around good one car solution, or the practical alt to your fun car (like mine).
I dailied a 2018 club for 5.5 years and I loved every moment of it. Then we had our first child and I had to trade it for a boring SUV. The kid is sweet tho.
The lsd is the biggest change on the mx5. The nd1 and 2 had snap oversteer on corner entry making it not enjoyable and pretty much deadly. Now thats gone. The difference is night and day. So because that is fixed now this is the best sports car on sale today
This is hands down the best looking modern roadster. My issue with miata and brz/gr86 is how low they are. For me at 6'3" ingress and egress is a pain. But love the car.
I've been test driving and shopping miata RF. I like both the manual and the automatic. Seriously, as a long time "has to be a manual" person, I am being persuaded on the automatic- yikes! I am shocked at the shifting speed. The sales person made a good point that all the F1 and other racing cars are now automatics.
I’ve been daily driving my 2019 since August last year. 138 miles a day and have basically zero complaints. Great fun everywhere, comfortable enough and extremely good on gas, 36-38 mpg as my weekly average
It’s missing a real air filter for a true daily… because that means driving in dense traffic where cleaner air is welcome. Aftermarket has you covered, but changing the filter means unbolting your dashboard. Can be done with plastic pry tools.
5:35 Im 6'2" and quite a bit heavier than you at 320lbs. I think im just about at the limit of fitting into the drivers side of my 2016 Miata, but trying to sit in the passenger seat is a no go, due to the way i have to contort myself my legs go numb after 20 minutes lol.
Love the mx5. The look. The build quality. But I just don’t fit well. 210 lbs 5’11”. Sold 2020 BBR club. Needs to be a little bigger and more power for me But I keep looking at mx5 videos. Lol
The GoPro is a good B-cam and or action cam, that's about it, the quality just isn't there yet. Stabilizing in post makes the shot look nauseating and unnatural so I try to avoid using it on close subjects. I think the issue in this one was with the lens, my wide one weighs twice as much as my others so my mount couldn't keep it in place over bumps. I bought a new mount and that helped but now I use a more telephoto lens if possible. I also found that the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 is a great ultra-wide solution, even if the quality isn't quite up to the full frame sony standards.

I am trying to understand if anyone has experience with long-distance driving in the Mazda Miata. How does it perform on long drives? Is it comfortable? Can you recline the seat, stretch while sitting in the car, and grab a drink or a burger without having to get out?
I ended up driving it recently for 7-8 hours in one day total, at my height, definitely not great. It’s loud, there’s no stretching, had to sit pretty upright so i could have the seat as far back as possible! Not impossible, but you’ll have to compromise quite a bit if that’s what you’re after. Much better daily if you’re not on the highway a whole lot.
@@Realistick Wow, my notifications were off for RUclips, and I totally missed your comments. Thanks for responding so quickly. I understand the concerns you're mentioning. I'm not sure if I'll be out on the highway every weekend, but I reckon it might be a max of 3-4 hours one way, with the super long drives happening less often. For work and back home, this should work fine. However, the bi-weekly Costco trips will need better planning to maximize space.
@@fsfaludi Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts! I’m in my 40s, and this will be our only car. Such a great car….But Mazda only offers it in such drab, gloomy, uninspiring colors! (Yeah I know about the 10 year old Soul Red, but enough already) 🫤
Any car can be a daily driver it's really based on how much room you need for your daily if you don't need a lot of room well there you go but if you need a lot of room well it should be obvious. I mean it's pretty obvious. And of course the other important thing is fuel efficiency.

Thinking about getting one of these for a Sunday driver
Great review, its been my perfect daily for the last 3 years. Have a baby now so I hope to add a 4 door car as my weekend family car
Tyler: Is your crotch in use?
Jess: Hasn't been in a while.
LMAOOOOOOOOOOO Ohhhhhh, my gaaawwwd! I can't stop laughing.
Glad you enjoyed it, it was fun to make even if it took embarrassingly long to edit! I want to try messing around with my review layout more often.
What’s your take on Miata vs Mazda3 hatchback for a second car?
Really good review, ez sub
I mostly drive on my own so this car would be perfect for me
I dailied a 2018 club for 5.5 years and I loved every moment of it. Then we had our first child and I had to trade it for a boring SUV. The kid is sweet tho.
I'm sorry for your loss...😂
The lsd is the biggest change on the mx5. The nd1 and 2 had snap oversteer on corner entry making it not enjoyable and pretty much deadly. Now thats gone. The difference is night and day. So because that is fixed now this is the best sports car on sale today
This is hands down the best looking modern roadster. My issue with miata and brz/gr86 is how low they are. For me at 6'3" ingress and egress is a pain. But love the car.
It's the only modern roadster
That's like saying the Cybertruck is the best Cybertruck
@@zgSH4DOW*BMW Z4 HAS ENTERED THE CHAT*
Excellent review!!!
thanks for the demonstration now i know i can fit a smaller than average human in the trunk of the Miata very helpful 🤣
im waiting for my ND3 to arrive from being shipped. arrived in baltimore sometime this week. got the club with recaro and brembo package
Mazda could not wish for a better review 😊
I’m 6’1.5” and decided after sitting in it at dealer, that I couldn’t comfortably drive it - the top of my head rubbing would be too irritating. 😢
Reading through these comments, it really shows you how cool the Miata community is.
Grant yourself permission to have fun, and the purchase becomes easy!
Hell yeah, that has to break some people’s minds to see you hop out of it!
I attempted to daily one and quickly realized I needed a second vehicle.
Where is this filmed?? It’s so pretty
Bloomington Indiana!
Best daily ever, as long as it works for *you*!
Love the mx5. The look. The build quality. But I just don’t fit well. 210 lbs 5’11”. Sold 2020 BBR club. Needs to be a little bigger and more power for me But I keep looking at mx5 videos. Lol
This episode is hilarious
Use a go pro the sony shakes to much or stabilize it post! Pass on the shaking!
I’ve been owning a bunch of old cars but I’m finally ready to take on a modern ‘of the year’ car.
My decision comes and I’m torn between this and a WRX.
I like both brands and had both in old school format but I’m a casual. Just want a daily commute long term that looks nice and I’m having a hard time choosing one of these two.
Bro that's like trying to choose between a sledgehammer and a scalpel, I think your priorities are confused here. Please reconsider your needs?
@@lashlarue7924 How
@@biscuitman5388 If you really have to ask then you haven't done any research and are just chasing shiny objects. One is heavy, powerful, AWD, and heavy. The other is a featherweight RWD sports car. You are comparing bacon and velocity; the two things are not even in the same category.
@@lashlarue7924 I've done my research and in the end it comes down to just looks for me since there both about the same price'ish. and I like the looks of both, its as simple as that
I need that color in cx-5
I currently daily drive a Miata in that same color. I am however, looking for a cheap 2nd vehicle.
I live in Europe, it costs me less to insure, maintain my MX5 than my 2.0. Mazda 3 AND it uses less fuel. It's probably because my MX5 is a 1.5 but nevertheless.
I am 6 foot 8 inches. Would i fit in it? Im thinking of buying one😅
This would be my daily driver if i didnt live in a snowy city 😢.
How did bro get that white interior?
It's only available with the GT in the primer gray color (and it's $300 extra)
We don’t have kids, so my main conflict is balancing my driving experience with the comfort of my wife, who’s concerned about long-distance trips. I did a test drive and agree about the noise factor. I’m also unsure if I’d bring the top down every day. I’m eager to move forward with the purchase, but maybe I should rent the car for a full day first. Doing our daily chores and some long drives might give us a better perspective before making the decision.
6:40 lol wtf
Jess is not having it 🤣
She did not super look confident she’d ever get out of that trunk.😂
That crotch line was too funny.
I've got one coming in three months and i cannot wait
Very tough if you are over 5’11”!
Depends on your build (and your knees), at 6'3, I had to adjust my seat to a less-than-ideal position but it wasn't tough to live with!
@@Realistick Seeing you sitting in the car with your knees touching the dash and being over 6’ myself, unfortunately the MX5 does not appeal to us tall guys.
@@AB-jk7tw Oddly enough, I only hit the dash in the passenger side, driver's side has a pretty big legroom increase. My size isn't preventing me from buying one personally.
There is nothing like a SLOW CAR!!
I am of 187 cm would I sit comfortably?
My mitsubishi mirage weights 2300lbs 😂
I want one
Nice hair. Takes a lot of patience!
Thanks!
What happened to that beautiful red.... I hate these colors they push nowadays.
dream car. wish i invested into crypto in 2009 instead of being 4 years old
Damn these are starting at $30k now? Ughh
Bud, great vid. I like your delivery. LOL
On a different subject, you seem young, mid 20's maybe 30? Start using Luteine 20 Mg a day. It's for your eyes. It may not bring back lost vision but it can definitely help keeping the vision level you have. I'm 62 and been using it since I was 40, I still don't need glasses. Actually had a physical last year and nailed a 20/20 on the eye test...the doc came and looked into my eyes cause he didn't believe that I didn't have Lasik or contacts!! LMAO Now that's a great feeling!! Take care of your eyes. Your optician cares about his profits. And at $400 to $800 a pair, he''s driving a Boxster. Not an MX5.....Cheers
ON CHARACTER MEANS SLOW!!!
Having a 2013, 2015, and now a 2019 Boxster. I just don’t know how a MX-5 can be so touted as the best roadster like it is? Is it all of these car reviewers and commentators have never driven the Porsche?
Because it’s less than half the cost of a boxter, which i have driven :)
Plus on any given day, to the majority of consumers...affordability trumps everything.
Shocking how quickly they rust, all these years later and it's the only area where Mazda fails...
Fake Doug
All Doug does is review consumer features, he has zero engineering knowledge and it shows.
I’m not paying 30k for less horse power and torque I can get a older golf that will smoke this car for a quarter of the price
You should turn that into a convertible!
Pro Tip: Buy used.
Right, because that is a direct competitor to this car…
@@alexp6409 don’t be so negative towards them; let them get the older golf cart, ‘smoke a Miata’ then take a turn and roll the cart several times.
@@VictorPitstop😂😂....they can't live without their torque. It's their mental fix.
Such a great car….But Mazda only offers it in such drab, gloomy, uninspiring colors! (Yeah I know about the 10 year old Soul Red, but enough already) 🫤
They added a few new shades, and they still stink. Lol
Any car can be a daily driver it's really based on how much room you need for your daily if you don't need a lot of room well there you go but if you need a lot of room well it should be obvious. I mean it's pretty obvious. And of course the other important thing is fuel efficiency.
