Cessationism 4 (Have Tongues Ceased?) | Daniel Kolenda: Off The Record

- In this episode of Off The Record, Daniel Kolenda continues his series on "The Heresy of Cessationism" asking the question in part 4: "Has the gift of speaking in tongues ceased?"
By dissecting key passages from 1 Corinthians 14, Daniel challenges the Cessationist belief that glossolalia in the New Testament is referring exclusively to unlearned, human languages. Instead, he presents a compelling case that tongues, as described in Corinth, are primarily a spiritual language that “no one knows.”
Daniel also offers a rebuttal to the common cessationist idea that there is no justification for enjoying tongues in a private, devotional, personal edification capacity.
Finally, Daniel shows how the 1 Cor. 14:22 does not teach that tongues intended to convince Jewish unbelievers of the truthfulness of the Gospel as many cessationists claim.

I didn’t understand tongues as a little girl and to be honest it scared me when I first saw someone speak in tongues. Afterwards I didn’t want anything to do with tongues. I thought tongues came onto a person without their control.
Growing up my parents went to many different churches. We went mostly to traditional cessationist churches, but went to an Assembly of God briefly when I was a kid where I first saw someone speak in tongues during a church service. In my teenage years we went to a cessationist church. I asked about tongues, miracles and healing and the Sunday school teacher sternly rebuked me and told me God no longer did those things. Miracles were only for the start of the church. This made me very sad. I cried, if all miracles have ceased, then what does God - do? (I misunderstood them and didn’t realize they meant just the gifts had ceased and not all miracles. ..but if you asked them to pray for a miracle or healing they would hesitate and ask, “How do you know it’s Gods will?.)
I went to such a dead church I was determined when I grew up not to go to church again. My parents dragged me to church. I saw unsaved friends visit that church and leave quickly. I wanted them to know Jesus, but they preached just religious tradition without any power.
My parents sent me to Oral Roberts University even though they weren’t Pentecostal/Charismatic themselves. I saw people speaking in tongues again and heard them call it a prayer language. I had no idea what they were talking about and wanted nothing to do with it.
I got desperate at ORU. They talked about miracles Jesus did in the Bible still happen today, but I’ve never seen them. I was so sick of stale religion. I asked Jesus, if you’re real show me you’re real! I don’t want anyone to pray for me. I want you to reveal yourself to me yourself. I want to know it’s you and not from some person. Also I don’t want anything to do with that tongues thing. I’m scared of it.
That same day I had an unexpected encounter with God that lasted 3 days. It’s a long story. The short version. Day 1, Jesus showed me a small portion of his love. It was overwhelming! I couldn’t believe God loved a person like me! An imperfect sinner. Day 2, I saw a ball of wind and it hit me and I got this tongues thing. Jesus didn’t force tongues on me and showed me that I could start it or stop it at will. Jesus showed me in a vision that I was praying for things I normally prayed for and things that I wouldn’t think of praying for. Day 3, I saw a vision of Jesus on the cross. He looked like a Jewish guy from the Middle East.
Afterwards I had a lot of questions about my experience. I grabbed a concordance and looked up every mention of the words Holy Spirit. I never heard a message preached on the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. (I called it the tongues thing, because I didn’t know or heard there was a separate experience after salvation). I had to look it up myself and found that the Holy Spirit helps you to pray when you do not know what to pray. The Holy Spirit isn’t just tongues. He’s there to help us be his witnesses. Cornelius house received the Holy Spirit after they already been saved previously.
If the disciples and other people needed the Holy Spirit to help them witness…. Even after walking with Jesus…. Why do we think we don’t need the Holy Spirit Baptism today?
When I told my family and other Christians at my cessationist church my experience they told me it was of the devil. They told me theological professors say people who speak in tongues are making it up, how do you know it’s even real? I told them I just shared with you my testimony? God showed me his love, I got hit by a ball of wind I could see, I saw Jesus and felt Gods presence so strong that I didn’t want to leave? I can still speak in tongues whenever I want too. What more can I say?
Only my parents believed my story. That’s why I really enjoyed this series on cessationism. I didn’t know how to respond at the time. Everyone I knew were taught to reject tongues.
This experience occurred 30 years ago. The fruit of it I couldn’t get enough of Jesus, read the whole Bible and wanted to be a witness for him. I’ve seen miracles and healing in my own life and know Jesus is real. He’s not just another religion. He’s the Lord of my life and my friend.
When I was a young believer I was on a mission trip in Cyprus where we had a meeting with some Lebanese believers. While we were praying together I prayed in tongues, and afterward our Lebanese brother told me that I was praising God in Lebanese and asked if I spoke any Arabic...
Awesome!! Praise God!
I have never heard anyone explain this even half as good as Daniel K., - He's doing an Excellant Job!
30 years ago I was praying in tonues (unkown) and the Spirit gave me the interpretation. My bother was planning to commit suicide that night and that he was on his way to my house to see me for the last time. I had no idea that my brother was even suicidal. The Holy Spirit also told me that my brother was not going to tell me his plans and that he had a large bottle of pills under the drivers seat of his car. Then I had a vision of my brother's car pulling into my driveway and him getting out of his car and walking up to my front door. I stood to my feet and met him at the door. When he sat down I told him everything the Spirit had told me and he began to weep uncontrollably. He could hardly believe that God even knew about him much less loved him. My brother retrieved the pills from his car and gave them to me. I led my brother in the sinner's prayer and he has been serving God ever since. The funny part of this is that my brother wound up in a cessationist/Calvinist church where every year he gives his testimony about his brother (me) speaking in tongues which resulted in his salvation! Who says God doesn't have a sense of humor?
Wow!!
Amén!
Why would anyone want to go to a conference on what God is not doing? Very strange. Thank you for standing up for what God is doing.
Do you ever read The Bible for yourself? Have you ever read what happened on Pentecost for yourself? Do you not understand they spoke in KNOWN languages?
@@realjosephanthony really? Where does it say that the tongues were known languages. I actually disagree with Daniel here. Scripture does not say that the tongues in Acts 2 were spoken in known languages and dialects, but that they were heard that way.
I live in an area with multiple dialects, and can't imagine trying to discern words from the cacophony of every dialect of the dispersed Jews in the Roman empire.
@@JimAndBess1 "And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans? *And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?"* Acts 2:8 KJV
The idea was the Holy Spirit was giving them ability to bridge the very barrier you're talking about in your town.
It is a sign for unbelievers, that is what is written.
“Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.” 1 Corinthians 14:22 KJV

It's serpent speak, it's demonic.
This is what is being taught in the Churches.
It is Anti-Christ and a demonic doctrine that has twisted scripture into something quite perverse.
@@realjosephanthony it said that the crowd each HEARD in their own dialects. It is an assumption that it's because the speakers were speaking the way it was heard.
Recently, we were in a Friday night meeting that we have every Friday night called housefires the Holy Spirit began to move And deliverance begin to take place with one of the people there. I was holding onto the person who is receiving, deliverance by the shoulders, and my head was very close to his. I was praying in tongues while he was receiving deliverance. He told me afterward, that he could clearly understand what I was saying, and that he could clearly hear me saying that God was confirming his identity as a son even though I was speaking in tongues, it was beautiful. Praise God.
Daniel it’s a stronghold! we need to pray for them. They are blinded by spirits even though they are saved. Let’s fight this battle in the spirit . Our battles are with spirit beings.
Yes, I am discerning that as well. I am already attacking those spirits in prayer. It is a spiritual war and they are blinded by a veil.
Pray for Justin Peter's healing. You know Saul who persecuted the church and even murdered Christians? He eventually became the Apostle Paul who wrote 2/3rds of the New Testament.
Justin Peters, the poster boy of Cessationism. Who knows if God has a sense of humor and flips it around and makes him the poster boy for gifts of the Spirit.
Justin Peters suddenly receiving virtue from God directly, and starts walking. 🤭
No amount of debating doctrine can explain it. Justin himself will have no means to explain why he can suddenly walk. God can even appear in his dreams and appear to him in visions. Afterall, MUSLIMS are seeing Jesus in dreams and asking Christians what does "I am the Way, the Truth, and The Life mean?"
And imagine Justin Peters having supernatural encounters with God and appearing on Sid Roth. Just like Saul who became Paul: "everyone knows who I am. And now testifying that I saw Jesus in a bright light appearing to me!"
I would totally laugh so hard if that happens.
100% want to see a series about the giftings and their proper operations.
Im a former cessasionist and Calvinist who switched over to believing in the gifts of the Spirit. It happened while reading the bible. In Matthew 12 22 Jesus is accused of demonic healing and this is called blasphemy of the Holy Spirit. I thought about it and I have accused people like Benny Hinn of this same thing and I started thinking about it very deeply. Why I ever accused him of this and how I simplylearned it. Then i started thinking about all the gifts and how I was so certain that they were for a different time but how the Bible doesn't even say that at all. This was all taught to me and soon my sacred cow was slaughtered. I now pray in tongues and I receive revelation from the Holy Spirit about so many things from what true rest is to how strongholds work. my spiritual life is so much more fruitful than the decades before.
I was babysitting my granddaughter and she had a bad cold and so when I picked her up, on the way to my house I stopped by the drugstore to get some baby aspirin and orange juice. There was a mexican man kneeling in front of the cooler and stocking it with drinks and when I approached he asked me if he was in the way and I said no you are fine, I am just getting some orange juice. When I turned around, my granddaughter was staring at me with wide eyes and I said what is the matter? She said Nana, I didn't know that you could speak mexican! I said I can't and she said well he said something to you in mexican and you answered him in mexican! To my ears, I was speaking english, but he and she heard it in spanish! I learned a great lesson and what the Gospels meant when it said the Holy Spirit was poured out and everyone heard it in their own language.
When the full-scale war between Russia and Ukraine broke out, we went with dozens of missionaries to share the good news to the Ukrainians fleeing the country. One gentleman, Filip from Czech Republic didn't have a translator for him but he felt God calling him to go and preach on that day anyway. He approached some people by faith, and in that moment, God gave him the ability to speak and understand Russian/Ukrainian, and he was able to communicate the gospel in a way that it was understood. To this day, one and a half years later, he still speaks the language without having known any of it before this miracle.
Around the year 1978 a lady in my local church gave forth a message in tongues during our worship service. It was not at all unusual for her to be used by the Holy Spirit in our pentecostal church in this way and it was always accompanied by an interpretation as required. However in this instance no interpretation came forth. Our pastor said the Lord is speaking directly to someone and he led us in praying together for the Lord’s direction. At that moment an older gentleman who often attended our church with his wife but was not a believer himself came forth weeping. He told us he understood the message that had just came forth. He had served in the military for many years and was fluent in the Italian language through his military service there. He heard this lady praising God in perfect Italian and this message contained a call to repentance in perfect Italian. That day he became a believer in Jesus and served God for many years.
Wow! Thats outstanding!
My testimony on speaking in toungues: I routinely went to our local hospital in Somerset West South Africa to pray and heal the sick. One day I ministered to an elderly gentlemen with severe, I believe it was Alzheimer's. He desparately tried to tell me something but he was unable to string even two simple words together while I patiently waited. I gently laid my hand on him and started praying in tongues. He immediately calmed right down and looked into my eyes with understanding and I just kept on. After about 15 minutes, and at the end of the visiting hour, I stopped and I will never forget his reaction. He clearly said, This is very great, I wonder if my wife knows about it. 😊
Daniel, I like the way you make your arguments clear. Glory to Jesus
Appreciate this, it’s very important. Also Curry Blake’s teaching “diversity of tongues” is so amazing. God bless
My grandmother was Greek Orthodox, not knowing anything about gifts. She walked into a meeting where someone was speaking tongues and instantly interpreted. The coolest thing ever. There is definitely a lot to still learn about the gifts.
Yes, I have experienced three instances where praying in tongues was actually a known earthly language. Once I felt like I had a word in tongues for someone at church, and our pastor recognized it from his theological/pastoral training as Ancient Greek. One of the elders felt he had the interpretation of it. So together we approached this person (who was actually very intellectual and skeptical of tongues) and ministered very specifically to them, which really helped build some faith in them.
Another time, while in private prayer, I felt that the language I was speaking was Vietnamese. Later that day I found myself in a Vietnamese car repair shop, run by Hmong people, and was able to witness to the people there by explaining how the Lord had had me interceding for them in prayer in their own language earlier that day. I was also able to tell them how my family has prayed for and supported missions for their highly persecuted tribe, which was a great blessing and encouragement to them.
The final time, also while in private prayer, I understood in the Spirit that I was speaking Hebrew. Later that day I encountered a homosexual Jewish man at the mall, and was able to talk to him about Jesus and even have him recite the Aaronic Blessing in Hebrew. Again I realized that the Lord had had me interceding for this man in his own language before I ever met him. Why? Especially since I was the only one hearing these languages being spoken? I honestly don’t know, but it did greatly increase my own faith, and show me how intricately God was working in the lives of these people, which to me (and to them, when I witnessed to them and told them what had occurred) showed us how deep and unique God’s love was for them personally, individually.
I may not understand all of the Lord’s ways, but I am so grateful for when He does allow me to see or experience even a glimpse of His greatness.
When I was 16 years old our youth Pastors brought us into a room and said we were going to receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. It was a small youth group. I felt like we were in this room for a while and so I said "Lord if this is real, just let me receive it" and Bam, I received the Baptism of the Holy Spirit with speaking in tongues and then the rest of my youth group began to receive it. That's why I know it's real. God is so Good, Amen.
Would love to learn more about the exercise of the gift of tongues! I'm grateful for your teachings!
Jesus is the SAME, YESTERDAY, TODAY AND FOREVER! SO ARE HIS GIFTS!
I was saved in a pentecostal church so I have known and practised using the gifts since a very new Christian. My mother, however came into Pentecost from a cessationist church background. My mother (a Spanish language teacher) was convinced when she heard a man praising God in Spanish as he sang in tongues.
Listen, please do a series on exercising the gifts of the spirit. If it’s just for me, this is so needed!
Yes please
Yes please continue to do more study on the gifts. I am planning to use your videos as means of discipling and teaching along with other resources. Your delivery is excellent and well structured. I have pastored house church for over 27 years and I believe this kind of resource is going to be extremely valuable in the future, as well as today, as many come into the kingdom. Thank you so much.
The two most controversial gifts (in my opinion) are tongues and healings. The two most divisive in arguments through people’s various experiences and emotional ties. Which is interesting because those are the two gifts that are plural… they have an (s) at the end, meaning there are more than one type of each. People try to put them in a box with one definition when they both have a plethora of uses and applications.
Wonderful teaching on the subject of tongues. From Zambia 🇿🇲🇿🇲
While handing out invitations to a Teen Challenge coffee house in Wiesbaden Germany on the WalkPlatz, I was strangely drawn to a man standing in a store front that was closed. I went to had him an invitation and I tried to figure out the proper German words to invite him. Well what came out of my mouth was not German or English, but he responded back to me in his language. Then we dialoged back and forth 2 more times. He was smiling and received the invitation gladly. I had no idea what either of us said and I tried to explain this to the others who were also handing out invitations. They thought I was joking or just nuts. Later I spoke to the director of the TC Coffee House, Klaus, about what happened. He asked me to describe the man, who looked homeless. He said, "I know that man and met him before. He is not German. He is Turkish. You were probably talking to him in his native language"...
This series in the "smoking gun" against Cessationism. So far you've made many points that I already knew about, while others were totally new to me. I so appreciate these videos!
The more I watch this series the more I’m convinced that the cessesionism is not the main problem. People are afraid to trust the Holy Spirit, or they might think they received it, but in reality the have not. Because if they received it and trust it, why aren’t they getting rebuked by the Holy Spirit for their ideas that aren’t based on the Scripture
This response was very much needed and over due
Thanks again Daniel! Another great teaching. Keep the videos coming in Jesus name
Thanks for doing this teaching sir.
(watching live from Nigeria)
One of the best thesis on the topic I have heard, well done and educational, also spiritually meaty
Please do more videos like you mentioned on the exercise of the gifts especially tongues!!!
I so want the baptism of the Holy Spirit!!!
Lord Jesus Christ, give this precious woman the desires of her heart.

Hello from Argentina! These post-casts are a great blessing.
Yes I’ve experience something similar. It must have been back in 2018-2020 on various occasions I caught myself praying and speaking in a tongue that sounded like Chinese I’ve never learned Chinese before. Then for the past few years 2020-2023 on various occasions I’ve noticed myself praying, singing, and speaking in a tongue that sounded like it was a form of Hebrew or Arabic. Again I do not know these languages. But find it quite interesting with the timeframe and the events of the times. With Covid in 2020 and what’s going on in Israel now. I’ve asked God about this because I myself have been amazed at how the Spirit has moved in this way. And I believe it may have something to do with Gods love for these people and His children He gave one of His intercessors their very languages to pray. It has also given me a great sense of being involved in Gods work for the events of today. For this I am grateful and it gives me something I can take joy in. I also believe it comforts Him and something He also takes joy in.
Go with it!🎉
It happened to a long time friend of mine who is a missionary. He visited India and was leading a group of young Indian speakers. They told hims they heard hims speak in an Indian dialect utterly unknown to him. They told my friend he was praising and glorifying God.
Many churches don't teach the gifts and Ministries of the Holy Spirit but that dosen't keep us from seeking the Holy Spirit ourselves
Good clarification my brother, very gracious of you :) 1:16
Gordon Fee does a great job unpacking 1 Cor 14:22-25
High time someoneg did this.. so glad Dan is coming out clearing all these pentecostal bashings.
I have a friend who was in Nepal trying to talk in English to her cab driver that didn't understand English. Suddenly she began speaking perfect Nepali but never realized it. Only her friend with her though she was speaking gibberish. The cab driver was overwhelmed by her perfect Nepali and decided to listen to the gospel.
Would love to hear some episodes about the exercise of the gifts.
I was praying with a couple who are great friends of mine, who are now with the Lord and she was Hispanic. While I was praying in tongues, she said I was using Spanish words in my prayer. She told me sometime later and she couldn’t remember exactly what was said. I believe it was Praise but I wish we would’ve had the words written down. I would love to experience that again.
Awesome video. There have been a couple of times when ive been praying in tongues and ive recognised words that ive said. One was someones name, another time it was the name of a particular subject id been concerned about. I believe it was one of the ways that God encouraged me at the time
On the 26/27th January 2022, about two days after my daughter was born and my wife was still in hospital, I was home alone in the evening praying. I went off praying in tongues deeply and intimately, loud and bold, which was unusual for me. It sounded like a different language. The following day while driving on the highway during busy lunchtime traffic, to visit my wife and daughter in the hospital. I was driving about 100 km/h (60-70 mi/h), which was the general speed. The car in front of me stopped suddenly. I stomped on the breaks and it's like someone took the steering wheel and swerved. The car spun wildly out of control! There were serveral huge oncoming vehicles. So the car went spinning from one side of the road to the other, crossing about 4 lanes. Not one vehicles touched my car and there were no accidents caused. A traffic officer who happened to be nearby and observed the whole scene, ran over to me in complete shock! The officer asked me if I believed in God because what had just occurred was a miracle!
If tongues have ceased then so has the promise of the father (Acts 1:4). There is nowhere in the Bible where it says the gift of the Holy Spirit was to be rescinded. Has Jesus stopped wanting to baptize people in the Holy Spirit? Cessationists have no Biblical basis for their theology which is 100% bankrupt as Daniel K. has explained on other videos. Also Acts 2 says they "heard" ηκουον them speaking in their own languages. The miracles were 1. the violent wind 2. cloven tongues of fire appear over their heads 3. They spoke in other languages (note it does not say they were speaking human languages) but the pilgrims heard them speaking in their own languages. Square with 1 Corinthians 14:2. speaks not to people but to God for no person understands him. Also if you all speak in tongues will they not say you are mad 1 Cor 14:23. If they are speaking human languages, why will people say they are mad? if it was human languages this makes no sense at all. Tongues is clearly an unknown language (not human) that is given by God. This is the logic of what tongues is from the Bible. You have to twist scriptures really hard to argue that it is an ability to speak human languages you have never learned. Deduction: if it has feathers like a duck, a bill like a duck, quacks like a duck, and has webbed feet like a duck. Chances are that it is a duck. Conclusion: modern and contemporary Pentecostal tongues is EXACTLY the same as tongues in the New Testament and continues today. It is simply unbiblical to argue otherwise. Even some Pentecostals think that it was originally human languages they were speaking. That may be the case, but other contextual clues make it unlikely. How hard would it be to hear a person speaking in your own language in a crowd of 3000+ with other people all speaking other languages at the same time? That in itself would be a miracle. Why the charge of them being drunk? If they were speaking human languages that makes no sense either. In any case the miraculous context of Acts 2 was evidently not normative. Each time they spoke in tongues they didn't have the rushing wind, appearance of tongues of fire, and speaking in an unknown human language. So you evidently can't apply the speaking of human languages as being tongues in a normative sense anyway.
Excellent!
Well articulated, we'll explained. The Word of God is truth and these people do err because they don't know the truth of God.
Are you saying that signs are the Holy Ghost?
@@nathanielmartin9892 How could you get that from what I wrote? The Holy Spirit works through signs or at least that is the testimony of the Bible. That's very different from saying that signs ARE the Holy Spirit.

I experienced the mighty rushing wind. If it happens to you, you will not have any more questions on this. The best I can describe is it is like a locomotive coming down on your head full speed. In the distance at first quite soft, and then…..a big suddenly. BOOM. Flowing through you and through you and through you with an intensity that cannot be controlled by you. Huge majesty of God and intense love beyond description. That’s the best I can describe something indescribable.
Thank you from Germany 🇩🇪
This was just so incredible, as always!🎉
Yes please do a more extensive series on Tongues.
One issue I wrestle with is that some people say tongues isn’t for everyone. Some people get offended if you suggest it’s an important gift, even if they’re going to the altar to receive it. The way I see it, the spiritual gifts are for everyone who eagerly desires them. It’s a matter of faith. If you believe the gift is for you and you go after it fervently, you will get it at some point. That has been my experience. The scriptures do say after all that without faith, it’s impossible to please God.
It was the least of the gifts, but the NAR and the other heretics, like Daniel, are very obsessed with it. Because it's the easiest gift to fake. So they can make themselves feel spiritually superior. They run high on emotions, feelings and experiences, over biblical doctrine. They are self serving narcissists. That's why Paul wrote the corrective letter to the CorinthIan church. They were misusing it like the charasmatics and pentecostals do today. Besides the fact tongues have ceased!
Father, help Your servant to speak Your words through Your Spirit.
I know of a time where a guy speaking in tongues to an atheist actually spoke a language that had been created by another atheist (unknown to the christian)! TRUE happening! Wow!
In 1978 i recieved the Holy Spirit and spoke in " tongues". I wasn't trying to. I didn't even know what speaking in " tongues" was. After praying for and being filled with the Holy Spirit i surrendered my tongue to the Spirit as i was told to by the pastor..
Suddenly, i felt the Holy Spirit cease control of my tongue and i began to fluently speak in a strange language i had never learned. The effect was staggering. I had never felt such pure joy in my life.
A short time later, the Lord gave me the gift of discerning of spirits which has operated several times since then.
You spoke the truth don't apologize
Right Kolenda doesn't need to apologize. MacArthur and Washer are very rude to the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Glory to Jesus !
Excited to hear this :)
First of all amazing series that God has brought to my attention at the right time so I thank the Lord for your obidiance. Sadly brother I will add to your tasks. You need to put this in a book then expanding on this you need to work on a systematic Theological study that underscores the apologetic take as continuationist .Finally you need to create a confessional document that articulates these truths. I'm a Christian born Pentecostal gravitated away into cessationist reform thinking about as nothing was challenging me in Pentecostal as to my make up that is being analytical and intellectual. The was a tendency to silence thinking in my circle as opposed to reformed circles .You have been God's to the cry of my heart.
I hope it's not too late to leave my testimony. It's unusual in that it was actually the gift of interpretation for the hearer. Shortly after my daughter got saved, she went to visit one of her high school students, who was in jail. My daughter went as a visitor, so the inmates and visitors were separated by glass, with a row of inmates on one side, and a row of visitors on the other side of the glass. My daughter is not fluent in Spanish, so spoke in English. The student's mother was also in this visitors' line. My daughter started telling this young man about Jesus. The inmate's mother only spoke Spanish. Coming out of the visiting area, Mom told my daughter, "I want you to know, I understood everything you said."
That's amazing! Thanks for sharing!
Yes I would like more continuationist episodes
Another great podcast.
The sarcasm that he mentions from earlier podcasts isn't a problem at all for us Aussies though.
I agree with everything you are saying and have seen so much of the authentic Gifts of the Spirit but my problem is when people start assuming that they can use extra- biblical practices like " Repeat after Me and be filled with Holy Spirit . That's not from God !
I've always made the distinciton between tongues in Acts and tongues in Corinthians.
In Acts as they spoke people understood them, in Corinthians Paul says no one understands him and his own mind is unfruitful in the matter but all of it is a mystery understood by God needing interpretation from God for us to understand it.
My pastoral calling was told to my mother by my pastor, having prayed in tongues the Holy Spirit told him I would be a pastor now this was many years ago, i was a teenager and i was very much in world, rebellious and having no interest in anything relating to God.
My relationship with my mother was so awful it almost seemed like a lie at the time, I've been a pastor for 7 years now
Just to add on, 2 weeks ago, we had two christian sisters visit our church at the request of their older sister who is a member, after service the two came to me and said pastor we are Christians but we are unable to pray in tongues, very briefly I showed them how people received the gift in the bible I proceeded to lay hands on them the power of God came on one them and I had to hold her to keep her from falling, she could barely stand as if she was drunk and she started to utter them, she was stammering and crying as she spoke, her sister two began speaking with new tongues
@@stevenjohnson3883Please listen to the video.
@stevenjohnson3883 hello Mr Steven, I believe it's the same gift manifested in different ways because on both occasions the language is never our own doing but the supply of God's Spirit. Whether the language is given for your personal edification as Paul states or whether it is for the benefit of others, which would be a language known to them it is all by God's enablement.
The distinction is exactly as Evanglist Kolenda states or more precisely Paul, Tongues for personal edification which can't be understood by anyone but serve the purpose of building you up, or tongues with interpretation which become prophecy by right or an outright human language.
@@stevenjohnson3883 In Acts 2 the Holy Spirit spoke to men and the residents of Jerusalem understood the languages.
In 1 Corinthians 14-2
The Holy Spirit is NOT speaking to men and no one understands but God alone.
One speaks to men but the other does not speak to men but only to God.
"Tongues are a sign for unbelievers" ... I can only speak of my experience. I had only recently learned about Jesus and salvation, not having been brought up in a religious home. Sure, there were occasional trips to church such as at Christmas or occasionally a bit more, but not to a church that had altar calls for salvation. I did not know the "born again" experience existed or was possible. I was in a tiny town and at a very small prayer meeting. There was also a girl, probably around 11 years old at the time (I don't remember who else was there because I became focused on what she was praying). This was a rural area with no private schools, nothing unusual but a small out-of-the-way town. I heard this girl speak in what I knew had to be some kind of a foreign Asian/eastern language. If you know languages, and if you pay attention, even if you do not know the language, there is a syntax, emphasis, pauses, things that define a language, even if you do not know the language yourself. How did I knew it was Asian or from that part of the world? Over time, we all learn to recognize some languages simply by virtue of hearing a few words spoken somewhere, whether in person or from foreign movies. You probably have heard, for example, Chinese and German and can recognize both even if you don't speak them. As a matter of intellectual honesty, I knew that whatever she had was real, even though I did not know the language. In this small, out of the way place, many years prior to the internet and things like Duolingo and other online learning methods, there was no way this young girl could have spoken so perfectly in an unknown tongue. Intellectual honesty is important. It was a sign to me that what she had was real. I became a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ.
We had a team in Mexico, where a lady got filled with the Holy Ghost except we didn’t know it because for 10 or 15 minutes was speaking in plain english. Only later did the interpreter let us know that this woman does not know English, and that has to be her prayer language.
I am sharing this with many others.
My son, who is saved and filled, when he was 9, said, Dada sometimes when I hear you praying in tongues, it sounds like chinese, sometimes russian, sometimes it doesn't sound like any language he has heard...
Wait a minute! is this the same as John R.W Stott (ref: 18:34 mins)? I read much of his bible commentaries as a new believer and was very well nourished! Would be grateful to now he is the same fellow you're referring to-- because that would mean I was so fortunate to have missed being "blessed" by his ceasationist views" apparently!
Leighton Flowers (Soteriology101) spoke of a time he was on a mission trip in Russia, and he was speaking English to them to attempt to evangelize. Someone heard it, and told him he was speaking Russian.
what i dont understand is that in the vast majority of churches ive been in when lots are speaking in tongues no interpretation is given.
Two questions for you . Inverse 13 of Corinthians 14it says that we should pray to interpret tongues. I've been taught that we can interpret our prayer language second question is it a church gathering where we come to worship the Lord more about a gathering of believers and not unbelievers. Therefore we should not be restricted from praying in our prayer language and a service or singing in our prayer language during the worship?
i 100% agree with your point! speaking tongue is from the BIBLE and from the HOLY SPIRIT!
I know that you felt the need to apologize, but at the same time, you must stand up and boldly speak the truth. Thank you Daniel for this series.
Also, didn't Jesus speak of "new tongues" in Mark 16:17?
Please are there books that speaks about the supernatural experiences especially speaking in tongues before Azuza street revival apart from God's Generals by Robert Liardon.
My wife Kim and I were ministering when my wife began speaking in a tounge which sounded asian. She was embarrased but felt to persist. Our church had quite a few students from foreign countries and a few began to laugh but Kim persisted. After this occurence a lady we knew who was from China, came up and told Kim," I did not know you spoke Chinese." Kim said that she did not know Chinese, she just felt to repeat the unusual phrases over and over. The lady from China told Kim she was saying over and over, praise to Jesus in Chinese. I don't remember what dialect. As it turned out, our friend had brought two other Chinese young ladies with her to our service, both of whom were backslidden in their faith. Because of this experience they both rededicated their lives to Jesus. Praise the Lord
Amazing! I’ve heard more testimonies like this over the years than I can count
I know there is a period for everything. Time moves on. Since Calvary we are in the Christ conscious field, with free will to take New Life, before the old time ends and the new one begins with Judgement.
Thank you!!
How do you respond to the Hindu kundulini comparison with the manifest workings of the Holy Spirit during a service.
More detailed teaching on gifts would be helpful, especially tongues
How did Paul know that he spoke in tongues more than anyone else? How about interpreting? Is that gift still around? Could be easily proven if someone is truly interpreting if the gift is still here.
He had us over for coffee in 2009 & is NOT antagonistic yet has fervor for truth of Word of God being represented in sincerity! He demonstrates Word of God in truth & power! Pls. read Mark 16:15-20
Just a thought... So If tongues are supposed to be a known tongue by cessationists understanding, how do they know what came out of the apostles mouths was not ecstatic? If people today are speaking in 'ecstatic' tongues, and others are hearing a known language, why do cessationists separate ecstatic from the equation?
How do cessationists make the assumption that multiple people of different languages didn't hear their own tongue from the same apostle at the same time... an ecstatic tongue would best explain this.
For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord will give grace and glory; no good thing will He withhold from them that walk uprightly.--Psalm 84:11 A gift is a good thing, and God does not withhold good things from his people.
Please continue your great work. Other Ministers that try to respond to the John MacArthur, Justin Peters and other cessationists, are either so timid or so lacking in knowledge themselves as to make the truth ineffective. You and Dr Michael Brown are the only knowledgeable and effective witnesses I've seen concerning pentecostalism. Though Dr. Brown is a little too reasonable and nice.
Cessationists are so busy guarding the Bible, they forgot to actually obey it.
Dear Daniel
thanks for the great message.
How can a believer that believes that tongues are still in practice as in Acts be sure that his own gift of tongues is indeed from the Holy Spirit and not made up by his own brain? (not doubting the scriptures but questioning his own experience) what gives him assurance?
Some say if you can pray with your mind while speaking in tounges, like, pray with your understanding, then its God. I don't think people can make it up but also be speaking in their mind at the same time if its them doing it, but if its God, then we can do what paul did which was speaking in tongues out loud while praying with the understanding.
Its called faith🎉
I certainly wish Daniel Kolenda ‘s Tongue had ceased I Recently listened to him, talking about the so-called heresy of Cessationism Only made me more of a Cessationist His constant sarcasm and backbiting towards the people who are Cessationists Was Deplorable
I didn't hear any sarcasm or backbiting from Daniel, but when I've listened to Justin Peters and Steven Kozar, I heard a huge amount of sarcasm, accusations of hereticism of all charismatics, mockery, and just nasty unChristlike statements of assumptions about charismatic or full Gospel preachers and teachers. I hear no mockery in what Daniel shares.
@@518hs My goodness, there was so much sarcasm, dripping from his mouth It was quite shocking you Are obviously only hearing what you want to hear my friend
Go check out Jordan Riley, Chris Rosebrough or the messed up church.
Since Daniel has made you more of a cessationist, they will drive you hard towards continuation.
Daniel is polite compared to those false teachers.
What about knowledge? If tongues are no longer, knowledge is gone too. That’s why people don’t acknowledge tongues anymore.Because knowledge is gone!!
Most censationist I know say that tongues has to be a known language.
‘Sketchy ratchet hermeneutics” lololol put that on a bumper sticker
I did a video recently asking if modern tongues are gibberish. I made the same point regarding the issues of pentecost for cessationists if they want to use it as the benchmark.
Paul! My friend!
@DanielKolenda you noticed! My first video is actually responding to a criticism of your message on 1 Cor 12. The criticism was one of the most unusual cessationist arguments I've heard.
I've subscribed after watching this series. I didn't realise you were so well read. Genuinely the best case against cessationists I've seen and needs to be a book!
Yes! I noticed right away and watched your response. I agree. The argument you responded to is bizarre. You handled it brilliantly. It was a real treat to see you after all these years.
@DanielKolenda Glad you watched. I'll ask for a cheeky subscribe as well 😊
On another note, when you're next in the UK, I'll look to come to one of your meetings.
@@coffeeandword that would be awesome. And I subscribed ☺️
Here's what I always tell those who say that tongues is a known language or the ability to speak and unknown language. Paul who knew Hebrew Greek Arabic and probably Latin. Pretty much knew how to converse in the major languages of the regions. So why would he need to speak language other than these and in the language that he did not know
Singing in the Spirit is a Scriptural support for public tongues
NKJV Bible. Romans 15:9
[9]and that the Gentiles might glorify God for His mercy, as it is written: “For this reason I will confess to You among the Gentiles, And sing to Your name.”
One more view you might consider. JESUS fulfilled Isaiah 28:11 therefore Jesus spoke in tongues every time he taught. And that changes how we approach 1 Corinthians 14. The Apostles taught the same way. As Paul said, 1Co 14:18 I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all... meant he speaks of things not easy to understand without prophetically revealing the words through teaching.
I have had three separate witnesses all verify that I speak Hindi. These are the same tongues that I've had for over 50 years. (I was born and raised in Portland, Oregon and my native language the only one that I know how to speak is English. )
No. They haven't ceased. I learned and spoke French when I was younger, and my grandmother helped me learn it. A woman speaking in tongues in the row behind me quoted part of Isaiah 65:1 behind me in French a couple of weeks ago. It was clearly aimed at me as it addressed the troubles I was dealing with
Daniel - great teachings! Isa.28:11 has nothing to do with the Assyrian, Babylonian, nor Roman languages. Remember how Rabshakeh spoke Hebrew in 2Kgs.18 to the Jews on the wall and how Eliakim begged him to speak Syrian? Therefore, If one connects verse 11 with verse 16 in Isa. 28 about Christ the stone, then we see that Acts 2 fulfilled this prophecy when some mocked tongues and then proceeded to persecute the people of God throughout the rest of the book of Acts. . The key verse in Isa. 28 then is verse 16. Initially, the message was to the drunkards of Judah and Ephraim as you shared, and through their rejection of Christ and the apostles in the 4 gospels and Acts, they would fall backward and stumble at the Messiah the stumbling stone and be broken, and snared, and taken as in Isa.28: 13. Furthermore, because of Israel’s history of unbelief, they were judged by Assyria, Babylon, and finally, after Pentecost, by Rome. Verses 14-21 speaks of these particular judgments. In verse 22, Isaiah tells the Jews not to remain mockers lest their bands be made stronger. They refused to listen. Not one hair of any tongue talking believer in 70AD was harmed. They had no need to “make haste” as in verse 16. Isa. 28:12 speaks of Acts 2 when believers were refreshed by the exercise of tongues at Pentecost, even as you and I are today!
There are about 7000 languages currently in the world. How arrogant of cessationists (specifically the condescending ones) to think they’ve heard all of them in order to verifiably say what those speaking in tongues is gibberish. GiBbEriSh!
Acts 2
I don't get why everyone says "they spoke" the languages of the people there. It doesn't say that. It say "each person heard" in their own language.
Strongs 191 "acouó"
To hear, to listen, to comprehend by hearing.
The 120 could have been speaking heavenly jibberish, but each person "heard" in their own language. How we limit God 😢
Great point! 16:03
