  • Craig Mottram is perhaps the greatest distance runner in Australian history.
    In 2005, Mottram famously won the bronze medal in the world championship 5000 meters, becoming the first non-african to win a world championship 5k medal in almost 20 years.
    For many years, Mottram was a force to be reckoned with in distance running. In 2006, Mottram would go on to defeat Kenenisa Bekele over the 3,000 meter distance, a near impossible task for most distance runners.
    Final score: 89 / 100
    Do you agree? Do you disagree?
    You know this is just my opinion right? :)

      Melburnian here - I knew who he was, but hadn't realised just how good he was. Offhand I think he still holds the Tan record, at something unreasonably quick.

    1:18 on his number it says Sheffield! This is my city in the UK! I think he was likely competing at Don Valley Stadium which was sadly demolished a few years ago. Anyway Sheffield has a great running scene but was just a pleasant surprise to see my city on his number haha

    He was in the year below me at my school in Melbourne. He was really small and scrawny. Never stood out as an awesome runner, he’s was good though. Then he hit puberty and left school. Didn’t see him after that until he was on tv. Was always a nice kid though.

      i think from 1500 to 10k its not a disadvantage to be 6''2 tall.
      he couldn't keep it up in the marathons although sub2h30 is still incredible.

    Fantastic assessment of Mottram. I loved that guy when he raced. I just wish he had been in the game longer. He, like a guy like Ryan Hall, was not in it for consistency necessarily, but to push the limits and throw punches. Gotta respect that.

    I'd say the four best non-African long-distance runners over the last 40 years has to be: Dieter Baumann, Craig Mottram, Galen Rupp, and Evan Jager. They really gave the East-Africans a fight. I'm looking forward to the future of Jakob Ingebrigtsen, and Axel Vang Christensen, as I'm sure they will do the same.

    Awesome video! Might be nit-picking, but I believe he's the 4th fastest over 2 miles. Daniel Komen (7:58.61), Haile Gebrselassie (8:01.08), Mo Farah (indoor 8:03.40), then Craig Mottram (8:03.50). Using the alltime-athletics database for reference. Is there another person faster than him?

    I think you should have given him a 10 for running range. Because of him having range from 1500 to the 10k. He may not have a time for 800m but his times are very impressive. He is not a quiet perfect tactician with racing like Matthew Centrowitz Jr. He certainly knows how to position himself especially in a race against Kenenisa Bekele. That's what surprised me. Bekele has a 3k best of what 7:25. He deserves a higher score of 90 91

  • @michaelhuntington29

    Alright. I'll go back to Centro on this one. Centro doesn't deserve a 9 on range if Craig also has a 9. The dudes ran a faster mile than Centro and he's ran sub-13, and mid 27's. Centro has some good mile/1500 times, but has only ran like mid 13's for 5k and forget trying a 10k. I think we need a revision on Centro. Centro's 93 to Craig's 89 is ridiculous. Craig in his prime is far superior than Centro. The only difference between them, other than Craig's superior PR's, is centro's gold medal.

    • @gamerdogleo2212
      @gamerdogleo2212 5 лет назад +2

      Jaymes Cole Centro won an Olympic gold and has been on a super high level for almost 10 years. Again, he even mentioned that Mottram’s downfall was the longevity. It actually makes perfect sense to me.

    • @bijohn333
      @bijohn333 5 лет назад +2

      gamerdogleo I don't disagree on career longevity but their scores on range, personal bests, and records broken shouldn't even be close. Mottram has a ridiculous range comparatively. HE HAS A FASTER MILE PR AND CENTRO IS A MILE SPECIALIST and he's also ran sub-13 for 5k and 27's for 10k. Centro has also been in plenty of fast mile/1500 races over the years and doesn't show up during those and flops in any race not one of those 2 distances. He tactically savvy, but not when it comes to fast races. Centro also doesn't hold a single American record, and he's really not been close to breaking any either. He hasn't shown an interest in going after them. People these days really don't understand quite how dominant the 2000's were for track. Centro won a gold medal in a race that the NCAA guys had a chance at winning. Centro wouldn't have anything if this was the time of Gerrouj, morcelin, or Lagat.
