Hi Master Lin! I own most of your stainless steel tools and use them often. They function very well. Recently I started thinking of some designs of my own and wanted to try this hacksaw blade method. The trouble is they begin to rust quickly. This does not happen with the ones I got from you. But I've found an option that works even better than hacksaw blades. For your information and your viewers, Amazon sells stainless steel bracelet blanks that are 6 inches long and 1mm thick. As a test I was able to make the #1 and #8 tools following your instructions on this video. Although I've not done any long term testing on them, so far they are very sharp and work like my other set. To me this is exciting and so I wanted to share. Your videos have been essential for my growth as a potter and I honestly can't thank you enough for what you do.
@macguyver4u Hi, 1.Quenching in the water make the high carbon steel harder not softer. If you can bend your tool, you might have quenched your tool too cold. Please Wikipedia "steel" to learn more about it. (my undergraduate major was Mechanical Engineering) 2. Highly used trimming tools get dull faster and that's why I grind / sharpen my tools every time before I trim my pots. 3. the reason I suggest using hacksaw blade is it is cheap. You can use better quality steel such as stainless steel.
Thank you for this. I love the idea of making my own tools. I think when you make your own tools your work can become unique to you.
I use the same tools to do the chattering. These hacksaw trimming tools are flexible and it help bouncing when you want chattering patterns.
Thanks very much for all your videos: they are great! I made the trimming tools with hack saw blades and they are fantastic. I also used reciprocating saw blades that are much heavier: they seem to work even better for the chattering technique. Best wishes.
You are an excellent teacher. Thank you so much for these videos.
Thank you for all your amazing videos! I made these trimming tools and love them, especially having the control to make them exactly how I want. Also, the opportunity to sharpen pottery tools and use them till they are gone saves a lot of money and hassle.
This is awesome! My art department has an art metals room so this makes this so much more exciting and possible!
So I tried these Hacksaw blades and they work great!!! Thank you for the video!!
Just found your tutorials. Thank you so much for them! You are an excellent teacher!!! And now I will make good tools myself :)
I have learn some mach from Mr Hsin-Chuen Lin , when my pottery classes were finished, and needed more information .it's been so mach watching his step by step videos .sincerely Reynaldo .
Thanks so much for your very HELPFUL videos. We enjoy your work and information !
Leave it up to Hsin-Chuen Lin to come up with something so simple, efficient, and effective. What an amazing idea! Thank you, I will try this!
Great video, thanks for sharing... I will make some new triming tools and look forward to using them...
Very helpful. Thank you Hsin.
thank you. it's good idea.
Of course! I knew I was missing the obvious, but just couldn't see it. Thanks for the reply.
I made some of these tools Monday and I love them! Do you only sharpen one side of them? I sharpened both but now it seems like one side sharp might work as well or better. I also sharpened some regular trimming tools for the studio and intend to sharpen more of them. I can only sharpen those on the outside. That's what made me review this video again and see that you only showed sharpening one side.
Thank you so much for sharing this amazing information! You are awesome!
This was such a great video....thank you so much!
@Tuxedoville The brick is for bending the hot blades that I don't want to burn my table.
Excellent info. I will be trying this for sure.
Can you tell me what the brick is for?
@joker22556 I have made these tools as well and love them. I think the trick is (I believe he said this in another video) is to just sharpen up all your tools on the bench grinder before your trim-a-thon. At least that's what I do.
Je parle français mais rien que de regarder les vidéos j 'ai vraiment progressé merci .
It is very beautiful
Hsin thanks much for these videos. They are very inspiring a educational. In this video you are using a torch to heat your saw blade. I want to buy someting like that in bangalore india, or from an international supplier on the internet, but dont ke of your know what to ask for. Can you help me with the brand name / make of your torch/ gas pump.
thank you for sharing such wonderful yet simple ideas.. its a great help.. :o)
Perfect. Thank you!
the first one he made was prety easy, how would you make the other shaped ones?
What about a surform? Could that be homemade or would you have to buy that from somewhere special? If so, where could I get one?
well done.
Is there a specific size blade that you reccomend? (thickness) I tried the technique today and the metal was too thin and the blades snapped repeatedly.
How did you manage to make the other shaped trimming tools?
Thanks. I know what I'll be doing later....making trimming tools!!
Please be sure to wear safety goggles while bending, grinding and sharpening metal!
Excelente ideia, mas seria melhor fazer primeiro para depois dobrar
