Escort Fighters || Why their role got diminished nowadays?
Once upon a time, when there was no missile technology, the military doctrine mostly relied upon bomber aircrafts, especially strategic bomber.
Strategic bombers went through a long distances. hence, had more range but they were vulnerable to the enemy's small, agile interceptor fighters.
The most of the fighter planes, even till date, have less range; hence were not capable of escorting bombers. So, there born a need of a special escort fighter and they were heavy and out-manuevered by enemies' interceptor fighters.
After some time the development of the drop tanks made sure that the range of the fighters were not very limited but still it was not enough.
After the development of air superiority tactics and missile technology the need for bomber technology diminished and hence, now the fighter escort planes are limited to escorting VIP planes and some old bombers.
