  • William Byron straight up beat the field on Sunday at Martinsville Speedway in route to his 3rd victory is the so far 8 race season. This should not surprise many as Byron has been showing off how elite he has become over the last three or so years. So I want to pose one question about Byron and his stance at Hendrick Motorsports? Is William Byron the clear #1 at Hendrick?

Byron has more wins, but Larson has led more laps. A lot of that has to do with Larson’s “checkers or wreckers” last year, which Byron benefitted from a ton last year. Darlington and Texas are the 2 races that I can think of where Larson had the dominant car, and then wrecked and Byron kinda backed into the win

There was at least 4 or 5 races in 2021 that Byron got screwed out on, mainly because his pit crew was awful at the time, and roughly 4 or so that Larson missed out on (more so due to his own actions rather than anything else).

If you go back to 2021, he was a single properly black flagged Chase Elliott and debris caution avoided away from winning the Roval to make the round of 8 where he would’ve easily pointed his way into the Final 4 based on his Kansas/Texas/Martinsville performances that year. That’s with the Gen6 car with smaller tires & brakes and more HP. Also if you look at his 1.5 miler performance he only ever had one win with the 550 HP Gen6 package he ran vs. the 2 he’s already gotten with the 670 HP NextGen package.

But this guy has me cheering at the tv again during nascar. It’s so cool to see the 24 winning at my 2 favorite tracks. Daytona and martinsville. I wish they didn’t destroy autoclub though. That was my all time favorite track. Just something about the 6 and 7 wide racing with the old cars.

I'm not a Gibbs fan though. I'm just willing to look at a situation realistically. Very few drivers nowadays start dominating in their second season. But, compared to last season (where he ran well, but struggled to get the good finish), he is only one top 5 away from last years total. Has led 50% more laps and a 10.3 average finish.
Hell, the kid is 7th in points. Like most young drivers, he still has to find a way to to finish races. Again he's only 22. He isn't going to be able to dominate. He has a lot to learn. By cutting him some slack, I think most people are referring to him being young and needing experience.

People seem to forget that during his CGR days, Larson had to give 110% each week because he was being held back by 2nd tier equipment just to even compete for wins. After that legendary battle with Jeff Gordon at Chicagoland, people were really talking about him. As Gordon was inching closer to retirement, people said that Larson should take over Gordon's ride and see what he can do. But unfortunately, he wasn't as lucky. He was stuck with CGR. Still, he managed to win 6 races with the organization. The moment he joined HMS, he became the winningest driver of the decade so far. Byron on the other hand was lucky he got into HMS as Kahne retired. Now you tell me who is better. A guy that can take a tractor to glory, or a guy that has everything fall right in his place.

I think we're seeing Byron rising to dominance in this next gen era. We saw this with Gordon through the Gen 4 and cooled down in the COT era, Jimmie rose to the top in the COT era and then we saw Elliot being the top at Hendrick with the Gen6 (after his slow start to his hype).
HMS always finds a way to be the most dominate team in Cup. They also have had generational talent at or near their peak in each new car. I think we're seeing that with Byron. Larson is right there as well.

Byron started as a sim racer & a damn good one at that and the next gen cars respond better (from what i understand) to driver inputs and they're built more like a Trans-Am racecar than anything, so the cars are more refined than ever now. I think thats where his dominance in the next gen comes from, seeing how he has the most wins in the gen 7 car than anyone else. These cars are alot more balanced & predictable and more similar to say a low downforce gt car, so I feel that his sim racing roots play a big roll in that.
None of this means that i dont believe in his raw skill as a driver. In fact, I feel the opposite. He has the perfect balance of skill, adaptablity, and talent to work the most out of the next gen compared to the current field and he'll only continue to get better with experience, and soon i wont be even the slightest bit surprised if William Byron becomes a house hold name in nascar and maybe even outside of it in the coming years.

They focused on Chase until he won his championship in 2020, then they tried with Bowman and he of course didn't really do much with what he had but I feel at the same time they were also giving Larson his time in the sun as well so he got screwed. There’s a trend with the last few Hendrick championships that have me a little concerned here. It seems like they’ll get a good prospect, they’ll either grow year over year until they win a title and then regress to a mediocre driver, or they’ll put up a legendary season to follow it up with a few good but somewhat disappointing seasons. Elliott for example, winless in 2016-2017, wins 3 in 2018, and from 2019-2020 won at least 3-5 races a season until he finally won a title in 2020, and ever since he’s been a solid 7th-10th best driver in the series after that. Larson at Ganassi had improved every season from 2015-2019, winning some races but proving he deserved a top ride, sat out most of 2020, and in 2021 comes in and dominates the season but since then maybe gets 2-3 wins a season. I know the next Gen drives a lot different from the Gen 6, so maybe we’ll see this trend break with Byron. I think overall, Larson is still the #1 guy pretty much fully on merit, Byron #2, Elliott #3, and Bowman as much as I like him he really needs some help over in the 48 car. He’s a nice guy, talented driver, but something just hasn’t been clicking with that team since his 2022 season the way it had in 2021 and most of 2022. A concussion and a back injury don’t help any but I hope he doesn’t end up having a similar end to his career as Steve Park, a talented prospect who’s career ended shortly due to injuries that hampered his abilities.

    Im a Larson guy.
My argument is that in a perfect car, I want William Byron. In a less than perfect car, I want Kyle Larson.

It’s 100% Byron. I think last year should’ve been clear he dethroned Larson as the top dog at HMS. This year he’s just proving a point.

Im not gonna discredit Larson but having races ruined by Hamlin and Chastain last year
I love Byron but come on bro

Byron is not better than Larson. Larson lost so many races last year due to bad luck whereas nearly all of Byron’s wins were luck based. And when it came down to the championship, it was Larson fighting Blaney for the title, not Byron

EXACTLY!!!! Larson is still the best of the best, the only one of the 4 that actually has a chance to replicate the glory days of Hendrick (1985-2017), and always gets screwed by whatever NASCAR throws at him, not to mention he was right up to Blaney last year and would have won it too had Blaney not cooled off before spinning out against Chastain

?? Larson was dumped in at least 3 races last year that he would have won otherwise, and is currently the season points leader. Is this such a narrow minded take

Hate to break it to all of you Larson stains but Larson is no longer the number 1 driver at HMS. It’s Byron‘s time now so get over it.

Just replace bowman and Elliott gets back winning and Hendricks could REALLY be unstoppable.

Byron is REALLY starting to come into what we all hoped he would be. Ive always thought he had big shoes to fill with taking on the 24, and thats maybe why he struggled at 1st(as well as Elliott struggled too) but once he got a taste of victory, he dont wanna give it up. Same way as gordon did in the 90s, even though Byron aint as dominant(right now at least) as gordon was

Larson still beat bryon at Texas, but anyways I think Larson is the best driver in Hendrick right now

Hell to the no. Larson is still top priority considering his impressive runs on every track out there. He's also the only legit champion of the team. Byron is only up there because he's carried by equipment and dumb luck, Bowman still has to play it safe, and Elliott needs to get it together

    • @whynotnascar
      @whynotnascar Месяц назад +1

How is Byron only up there because of equipment and dumb luck if Larson is a legit champion? I see them being two similarly calibered drivers and it's just an interesting take I suppose

If we’re playing the “legit champion” game, Byron scored the most points of any driver last season despite getting a 60 point penalty, that Larson conveniently avoided, after Richmond.
