I didn't get a credit card until I was 30 years old because I was trying to buy a house. I regret ever doing it because I ended up getting more cards and getting into 10K of debt when I told myself I would only have a $500 line. They kept offering me more and more of a credit limit and I kept taking it. I am hoping to pay off my debt this year.

I had two friends who used to work for a very popular bank at one time. When they got married, the bank fired one of them because they said they embarrassed them because their credit score reflected badly on the bank when they were individuals it was acceptable, but once they became a married couple, it was an embarrassment.

Back in the 1980s, I got a beautiful gold credit card in the mail on day. It was a carte blanche and dinner club. Well it was dual set. I thought I was a rich man. I went shopping and got a lot of things and some cash to.
About 6 weeks went by, I got a huge bill in the mail for over $4,000 and it was due!

But if you budget…and actually stick to it.. using cash or credit card shouldn’t matter. You already have the money set aside on what it should be used on.
That whole thing of spending more with credit is only when you aren’t budgeting so you have no idea how much you are spending to begin with.
My wife and I use credit cards to pay for everything that we’ve budgeted for each more and not a penny more. We never carry a balance because once, again we only spend what we have budgeted for that month…..we make $110 each month in cash back and we move that to our savings.

I have ton of credit cards and I love it. $0 debt only spending part of my income based on my budget. Racking up points and going on free vacations. Believe it or not, it is not a scam if you know how to budget and control your spending habits.
I know a lot of people with only debit cards, going to church and saving best to their ability with nothing to show for it in their retirement funds. They have never left the state they live in.
Live your life the way it makes you happy people. It does not matter , nobody know how long you have. Just be conservative with your time and money. Don’t waste it.

The thing with cash that people who insist on only using cash (and not even debit cards) is that it sets you up on being a target for getting mugged, potentially or, more likely, being “accidentally” shorted by the cashier when being handed your change. I can’t tell you how many times a cashier would just count the bills at the till and then hand me a stack without counting it out, only for me to count it back and discover I was $1 or $2 short. Once a college bookstore cashier shorted me a whole $20 bill for a $200+ textbook. When I confronted her about it she just handed me the $20 she was going to short me. Mostly the shorts come in the form of coins but for that reason I almost never use cash. One less thing to worry about.

Those people that only use debit and don't save for retirement are definitely doing it wrong. You want to save for the future. As for credit cards. I had them for decades with no problem but the first baby step is to cut them up and close them if their paid off. I did that in 2017. Never looked back. I still get airline miles, free hotel stays, 2% to 4% cash back on purchases, cash back on gas. I actually get way more money back with my debit then I ever did with my credit cards.

FYI, people who desire independent transportation get a car and choose to drive responsibly, because irresponsible driving has negative consequences, and choosing to not own a car is somewhat limiting. Likewise with credit cards. If you want the conveniences that credit cards provide, then you must be responsible for paying on time and in full every month, or else suffer the negative consequences.

The real chumps are the ones paying cash or debit and not getting something back. It depends on the person. I like credit cards as I can get 3-6% cash back on many things I use and pay for anyways. Plus many special officers like 15-40% cashback on special sales only with credit cards and won't work with cash or debit. Plus extended warranty like Costco credit card or Home Deport for an extra 1-2 years extra at no extra cost that can save you thousands if you appliance or TV breakdown. Also I can see weekly and monthly and yearly all my expenses and broken down into categories for me. Sometimes I have to fix an move things around as it isn't always accurate. If you use a debit card you get don't get these free warranty and longer return periods and price protection like many credit cards offer. Plus you are protected against unauthorized charges and not risk your debit card to be overdrawn and criminals cleaning your your bank account with your debit card. These credit card aren't elated to your bank account so you are safe from having your bank account drained. My credit card is set up so that any charges sends me an instant in-app alert or text on my phone so I can and do track my spending and can catch any unauthorized activity right away.

Lots of people get into credit card debt but there are a lot of people like me who are debt free and use them every day. I pay it off every two days as I use it. The benefit to using them is fraud protection and a second benefit to me is points accumulation. You don’t get either of these using cash or a debit card. I hate carrying cash. I’m probably not the audience for this but just wanted to share some balance. You also need a credit score to rent properties in the US.

    • @dreams2383

Not true. It used to be true that if you use a debit card you don't have the same protection but that's not true anymore. I've read all the fine print when I had credit cards and my debit card. I have the same fraud protection. In fact when I did have a fraud charge the bank stopped it before it was even used and contacted me. I wasn't out of money, I didn't have to wait to get to my account etc. Also I still get airline miles, cash back, points, I rent cars, hotels all that. I get the airline miles right from the airline themselves with their app. My bank gives me 2% cash back on places I use my card, and the place I get gas at gives me 2%-4% depending if it's a gas or food purchase. I haven't had a credit card since 2017. Things have definitely changed over the last 5 years drastically.

There will come a time when you forget or suddenly are unable to pay it off (job loss or otherwise). In addition to that, it's not just about if YOU can do that. By using a credit card, you are encouraging an industry that makes billions off the less fortunate. You are telling them that it's okay to do this as long as someone else foots the bill for it. You are basically taking money from other people's wallets on a gamble that you think you won't ever have money issues. The industry is 100% corrupt and is not trying to do you a favor by giving you cash back. They are using the masses to encourage companies to take and push credit card use despite its obviously evil designs. Stop taking advantage of others and shred the credit cards and don't use them again. Using them encourages more debt options to surface.

    1. Cash back/ reward points
    2. If you get Rob you can get a reimbursement from your credit card company
    3. Free upgrade at hotels or flight seats
