You can see it’s a cruise ship’s engine room because it is so compacted. They left the bare minimum of space for inspection and maintenance. I like engine rooms but I have a doubt about this one. (ex-ship’s engineer on bulk carriers and container ships)
Impressive beyond words! Just the fact that everything works together is amazing! I thought the diesel truck engines I've worked on where large! Comparatively they look like little go-kart engines now. The multiple systems are mind-blowing.
Yes. On this ship it is a special setup, as the scrubbermaker went bankrupt before the installation was finished. So the system has two makers, as a different company finished the installation. All the ships I have videos from have scrubbers Martin.
A really nice "beat" in those 9 cylinder engines. Do you have auxiliary engines in addition to the main engines or is auxiliary power taken directly from the generators ?
Auxiliary power is taken directly from the main engines. They have a few emergency power generators tough. Maybe I should start including those in my future videos also.
You could say main engines as there are no other engines. The majority of cruise ships built in the last 25 - 20 years, have electric propulsion,. On older cruise ships you can find classic main engines, usually four, and two propellers.
hi mr. andre its a huge impressive engine room, I have some question for you, the engine its look like a wartsila or B&W if I'm correct and is a four cycle engine , another question 6 main engine how many propellers, the engine has a shaft generator and a pitch propeller drive? how many engineers and ratings crew, sorry of my lots question ,hoping you can reply me.
Hi Socrates. These engines are only power generators. Then this power is used to power two large electric motors who is connected to two propellers with a long propeller shaft. Not needed to have pitch propellers as the electric motors are controlled with large VSD frequency controllers. Dont know how many engineers is working on the ship. Yes they are Wärtsilä engines. They also power the rest of the cruise ship.
Yeah, I have worked on this type of engines 9 line type and 12 V type. And if this is the former Costa Atlantica or Costa Mediterranea, and it looks like, I’ve worked on both in 2016 and 2018
Yes they normally hardly know they are on a ship at all. Most refer to it as a boat... There is a possibility tough, to buy a guided tour of the engineroom on some ships.
@@andresteinum Thanks! Ya, even if ppl knew about all the infrastructure on the ship, they don't care. They just wanna have fun. At what stage does a "boat" become a "ship"? LoL.
Why would the passengers need to care unless they had a real interest in it? You know how every system in Your Body Works relating to the other systems? Yeah, I didn't think so!
Daaaamn. A lot going on in this one! Those generator heads are massive, what does the plate on them say?!?! EDIT: You did show it! 11000 volts and 11405 kVA? jeez! Times by six!!!!!
On a Cruise ship a very average range is hotel and other mechanical power services consume about a 1/3 of the entire electrical powerload required when sailing at service speed. And I did not see any propeller shaft in this video. Only 6 generator sets. I imagine either it is driven by 2 Azipods or 2 direct shaft props from 2 electric Propulsion Motors.
I saw DG6 ( 6 diesel generators, plate and frame heat exchangers, chillers with 410a refrigetant water cooled but not with cooling towers. I guess that's what the plate and frame heat exchangers are for, to reject the heat of evaporation and compression.😊😮
It has a big benefit. You can manage the power provided by the engines in a way that all the engines are running at most efficient loads. With a direct propulsion that is not always possible, except you are steaming over long distances what cruise ships do not do
I wonder how much electrical power a cruise ship uses. I believe these big diesel engines are best for propulsion but a turbine might be better for electrical power. A lot less parts and very little maintenance. And they are efficient. We use them in the offshore industry as both drives for compressors and generators. 50 megawatt generator sets are common.
They are not big Diesel engines but compact medium speed engines to save space. Main propulsion steam plants burns more fuel and are not as efficient as Diesel Propulsion. However a Diesel plant has a lot more moving parts and required maintenance pushing the running costs up. Today you would be hard pushed to find a ship with a steam propulsion plant. Probably the only ones would be Gas carries that can burn the boil off from the cargo tanks in the boilers to provide steam for the turbines.
I have so much respect for engineers that can design and build systems such as this.

I wish there was description on what we were seeing. I think I saw at least 1 LARGE centrifugal chiller for the A/C.
I have worked in some huge engine rooms on ships I work on, but this is massive

I find it difficult to get the words to describe just how impressive this was.
andre this was good video of engine room like it a lot.
Wartzilla engines? Could be the Greek ship Celestial Olympiad. Just retired. It had 4 DE I think.
Cool video, I like the detail shots of the machinery labels. Is this a Fincantieri built ship? It looks similar to the one I filmed recently.

Nice and clean engine room. What is your main engine sir?
And not an oil leak anywhere....Very impressive!

Auxiliary power is taken directly from the main engines. They have a few emergency power generators tough. Maybe I should start including those in my future videos also.
How many propeller they have do they have a transmission to connect each other to allow them to become 2 propeller
Usually, two propellers, electric propulsion. These engines purpose is generating electric power.
@@sebastiandanciorogaru1052 So they are not main engine so in the vlog it say six main engine Ive never encounter six main engine on the ship

Wartsila engines?
Yes
Thanks!
I see they’re fitted with the Schaller Oil mist Detectors that don’t actually work !! 😮 I heard one went off AFTER the engine caught fire !!!

How they have r 410a chillers on a ship. 410a is a real high pressure gas for tube chillers...whats the deal....no 134a or r32???
Realy I like it
How much fuel does this engine burn?
Truly amazing
Costa atlantica!!❤
which ship is this
I don't tell the ship name or imo so make a guess.
Engine Wartsila 9L 46
Finally it will ends somewhere on a beach in Pakistan.
Needs explanations and indication upon engines as well as auxiliary parts. Also its a need to be subtitles in English language.
Just giant generators now, to power the electric pods, not direct to prop anymore 😢
So?
