  • Here's AnalogPlanet's Capital Audio Fest 2021 Day Two coverage. Not as long as day one. Missed a few rooms and didn't return for day three but there's still plenty to see, beginning with an interview with Theremin manufacturer Arthur Harrison who was invited to give a two part deep dive talk into the spooky sounding instrument.

    The opening of this presentation with the Theremin was amazing, and FINALLY, the Beachboys mystery instrument revealed!! (so many got it wrong!) As a keyboardist from the 60ies and owner of Moog and Arp synthesizers as well as a Moog 'Etherwave' I surely appreciated the nod ((O: The ONLY instrument you play WITHOUT touching it !!

    I’ve been to one show, saw the prices for everything and then got the “What am I doing here?” feeling, like I was sneaking into a club where I didn’t belong. Still, it’s enlightening to hear mega and semi-mega systems with no pressure to buy, but I’m not sure of the point of it all. Some reviewers mention it as a social event, but I never really felt it to be that. Hifi listening is mostly a singular pastime from what I’ve seen. Thoughts/opposing points of view?

    • @jackprick9797
      @jackprick9797 2 года назад +1

      The listening itself can be and usually is for one person, but the rest of it can be social, similar to a book club. You can congregate to discuss what equipment you like, you can join clubs for let's say Rega turntables and discuss mods. You can discuss what records and details about recordings you like, you can discuss your favorite cables, etc, etc.
      The shows are for those people, people who are really into it and who really enjoy it. If you follow Macintosh amps you might want to go see what 's new this year at the show as opposed to going to a local shop. The people at the show, particularly if they are the manufacturer, should have more details than a shop and like you said, no pressure to buy anything. I think the shows are for those people that really enjoy audio and that have been doing so for a while. I don't think it's for the person looking for their first set of $500 speakers. Those people are still torturing themselves on what to buy and have a long way to lgo to listen to their system and enjoy the music. That's a different mind set- those people constantly looking for what is the best. Not to say that the show shouldn't have more entry level products to showcase. An entey level system can be enjoyed just like a high dollar one.

      YOu might have not done enough exploring while you were at the show.
      There are many fairly high end sounding products these days, at really affordable prices.
      Schitt Audio, ELAC, Zu Audio, Hegal, PS Audio Sprout, Topping... the list is long.

    Michael, I honestly wished you NOT talked over Mr. Sanders when he was reponding to your comment! As a Martin Logan owner, I wanted to hear what this part ledgenary founder of the company was trying to say..... also, thereminists DISLIKE the term 'spooky' when refering to the instrument. Ms. Rockmore made that clear in the performance video she and Robert Moog made.

    A semi-funny story: I went to the CAF in 2019, walked into the Salk room and stood by the door, and the rep invited a bunch of us into the back of the room. I’m standing in the middle of a bunch of people. A few tunes play, very nice. Then they cue up “Guantanamera” by The Weavers, and everyone around me - back, front, sides - starts singing along, as if on cue! I had never heard the song before that time - started looking around to see if I’d been punked.

    It’s very interesting to me that the equipment keeps getting better but presumably for decades old records, the new records keep getting worse and worse… people are churning out the lowest quality stuff imaginable these days and people just aren’t doing enough to support the handful of labels that actually do put care and effort into their product. Maybe they get enough business, but they could certainly get more considering how many people supposedly love vinyl these days!

      @@tiojimmy3425 interesting… was curious as I’ve been all about record cleaners lately and stuck in this all records have noise mindset.. couldn’t imagine trying to sell $100k + systems based on the sound of a record. Hoping it’ll play through well for EVERY demo…

    What was the deal with that turntable in the beginning that had 2 large platters, but the one below the one with the record on it, was spinning the opposite direction? For the life of me I cannot imagine why that is necessary. Any thoughts on that design?

    • @RichTeer
      @RichTeer 2 года назад +1

      That was the Kronos Audio turntable and the theory behind having the counter-rotating platter is to offset the forces caused by the main platter. I heard an early prototype at the Montreal Audio Show a few years ago; pretty impressive!

    QUESTIONS FOR MICHAEL FREMER - (1) In some of your videos we can see you have tens of thousands of records. Did you ever listen to all of them, at least once? (2) Have you ever played a master tape of an album in a recording studio, or even in your home, and then compared the sound of the best available vinyl pressing on your top quality turntable, or even in those you find at audio shows - How far is the best vinyl from the sound quality of the master tape? 50%? 70%.? (3) Has there ever been a vinyl that was remarkably close or the same as the master tape? Thanks!

    This hobby has gotten way to out of hand expensive. I can't afford even a tiny fraction of the cost. Maybe 100 times lower price somewhere between 1k and 2k. So I buy used vintage gear which sounds every bit as musical as anything I hear for $200K at an audio trade show. Sansui integrated playing into iconic British speakers from the 70s sounds thrilling to me.
