Special Interview with THAKSIN
Thaksin Shinawatra, the former Prime Minister of Thailand, is one of the most controversial and influential figures in Thai politics. He recently paid a visit to Korea to attend the World Knowledge Forum, during which he met with Sohn Jie-ae, the President and CEO of Arirang TV, to share his thoughts on the current economic issues in Asia as well as the general issues of Thailand and Korea.
During the interview, he asserted that the countries of Asia, forming the largest continent in the world, must put their conflicts and differences aside and cooperate with one another to emerge as the world's new leader. He then emphasized the need for more opportunities for the leaders of the Asian nations to come together and seek the measures to achieve the common goal through multilateral communication.
Shinawatra was overthrown in a military coup in 2006 and has since been living in exile. But while he was in office, he implemented a set of economic policies, referred to as Thaksinomics, which is in essence very similar to the Saemaul Movement of Korea. During the conversation, he revealed the background and vision of 'Thaksinomics,' which was highly criticized yet resulted in fruitful outcomes in that it stimulated the rural economy.
Despite living in exile for nearly a decade, Thaksin Shinawatra still has a strong presence in Thailand. His younger sister, Yingluck Shinawatra, entered politics in 2011 and was elected Thailand's first female Prime Minister that same year. He stated that he does provide his sister with advice based on his own political experience, but it is by no means an attempt to influence Thai politics through her. He further stressed the fact that he is out of the political world for good.
All he wants, he says, is to forgive and forget and to return to his home country, Thailand, so that he can be with his family and serve the people.
태국탁신총리
탁신 친나왓 전 태국 총리가 최근 세계지식포럼 참석차 한국을 방문했다. 태국정치계에 가장 논란도 많고 제일 영향력이 있는 탁신은 아리랑 TV 손지애 대표와 만나 아시아 지역 경제 현안과 태국 그리고 한국에 대한 특별한 대담을 가졌다.
탁신과의 대화에서 세계에서 제일 큰 대륙인 아시아가 서로에 대한 대립관계를 잊고 같이 협력하여 세계의 리더역할을 도모할 방안을 모색해보았다. 아시아 국가들의 협력을 위해 한자리에 모여 대화를 가질 기회가 주어져야 한다고 강조하기도 했다.
2006년 군부 쿠데타로 실각한 후 근 7년간 망명중인 탁신 전 총리는 한국의 새마을 운동과도 유사할 수 있는 "탁시노믹스"를 실현하면서 포퓰리즘 정치라는 비난과 함께 지방경제의 활성화를 도모하기도 했다. 대담에서 탁신은 경제활성화 정책을 구사하게 된 배경과 비젼에 대해 진솔한 이야기를 나누었다.
장기간의 해외 망명생활에도 불구하고 탁신의 존재감은 여전하다. 정치 경력이 전무했던 여동생 잉락 친나왓이 2011년 최초 여성 태국총리로 당선된 것이다. 그러나 그는 단지 여동생의 오빠로서 조언은 해줄 수 있지만 정치를 대신 해주는 관계는 아니라고 한다. 탁신은 이제 정치생활에서 완전히 손을 뗐다고 강조하기도 했다.
그는 이제 모든 것을 다 잊고 용서하고 고국인 태국으로 돌아가 국민에게 봉사하며 가족과 함께하고자 할 따름이라고 한다.
