Catch and Cook Ep:1 Whiting

- I decided to start a new series called catch and cook. I am going to keep my original taste test series where I eat weird fish but also have this new series where I target good tasting fish for the purpose of cooking them. Today I filmed ep 1 in Navarre, Florida. The target species was whiting and Pompano. I was only able to get whiting, but still had a great time doing it.
Whiting are way underrated as a catch. November through March all along the Gulf of Mexico 1lb to 2.5lb whiting are common catches.
I will put out 4 baitcasting rods on 9 to 10 ft light surf rods. The reels are spooled with 10 lb mono and a 1 oz to 3 oz sinker. A simple 4 to 5 ft section of pvc pipe makes an excellent rod holder. I use size 2 circle hooks on a 4 ft 20lb leader.
The line has a snap swivel set to free slide on the rod end of the line. Another snap swivel is on the end to attach the hook and leader.
A peeled slice of shrimp is all you need. Use just enough to cover the hook
Cast out as far as possible.
Tighten the line till the rod tip bends. Put out the next one.
Usually by the time I get all four rods out one has a fish on.
By the time I land the fish and cast out another bait there is one on another line.
I have filled a cooler with 50 to 60 lbs of 1.5 lb plus whiting in three hours.
They freeze well if you don't clean then. Clean what you will eat at a meal. I clean them just like you did.
I roll them in seasoned cornmeal and fry. Eat them with potato salad, mac n cheese, collards or any side dish.
Jim Presley - Old Fishing Fool Good information! I ice fish them in the winter in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. They are called silver hake by the local people. I plan to use larger circle hooks to catch the large ones.
How do u get the bones out
Nice video! Coming down to perdido key this spring and want to catch some fish to prepare. This was a short simple and fun video to watch. Daughter enjoyed watching it too. Thanks again for sharing! NW Florida beautiful as always.
I'm here in 2021 watching this video, and let me tell you, it is crazy how far you have come in a short bit of time with the quality of your videos.
Brought some home after fishing with Matthew Isbell in Orange Beach. Great fish, cooked in oven with olive oil, greek season and lemon juice... AMAZING.
What orange Beach
Orange beach Alabama If so I did the same thing
I like how you narrated your tactics and techniques for the targeted species. I would like to see some more of that.
Taste real good fried in corn meal, also. Love whiting!
That's the only way I fry any fish I eat
@@chiphats That cornmeal flavor is yum-crunchy!
I love catch and cooks good idea
i grew up on whiting fish. we would never fillet them. we gut them, save the head for fish stock, and scale them. then depending on the size just chop them into 3 or 4 pieces and fry'em up. the fish is so easy to eat. basically the bones are just the spine. once you cook them it just comes right off when you open up each piece.
Great video and keep up the good works. So glad i found this channel
Great video nice save off the pier having fun catching up on your videos
First time on your channel and this is the first vid I saw, loved the video and subbed to the channel hope to see more great content like this. Keep it up 👍🏼👍🏼

just started catching whiting and came across this video. Love the tips and going to fry mine too!
This channel has way less subscribers than it should have keep it up with the quality content
Thanks
Your way faster at cleaning fish than me also keep coming out with a great content
Awesome video man! I love catching whiting!
Great video, I just moved to Panama city and have been pulling in 15"-18" whiting left and right and tossing them back. I think I will keep a few. Thanks.
Dude just saw your RUclips channel on my recommended haven't watch the video or any and just subbed without watching a second of it
I'm a whiting fan as well. Way underated and such a beautiful silver and purple sheen in bright light. I was killing them yesterday at Melbourne Beach with peeled shrimp and a small piece of Fish Bites on each hook.
whats up brant just found your channel great stuff. Living in San Diego love seeing how other people target and catch fish. Those lil whitings are a lot like the californian Corbina we have out here they run a bit smaller maybe and most people out here like myself catch em for fun not for dinner please keep posting ill keep watching
Please keep this up sounds amazing
I've been subbed for a while now, I just wanted to tell you I hope one day I can have a life like you have man. you look like you enjoy it so much. tight lines brotha

I love whiting..... one of my all time favorite food fish. My other fav is pompano. I agree fried is best for whiting. Pretty hard to beat.
I love your content
Thnaks
Your surroundings whilst whiting fishing is totally different to ours here in the UK. Interesting to see your rig and bait presentation.
This is my first time watching your videos, it was an awesome video and you've just earned a New Subscriber #TightLines I love fishing Navarra
great video! subbed. Keep em coming!
Take those whiting filets and roll them up with chopped capers or green olives and onions with a slice of lemon peel ( you can whiz the veg in a blender to make a spread for the fish if you want to make it easy), hold with toothpicks and saute in garlic butter. Look out! It's a taste bud tantrum...:) Goes really good on any pasta. Herbs of choice of course.
Now that's what I'm talking about catch clean and cook I really like your videos and you had gotten away from clean and cook's glad to c your back
Thumbs up!
whats up men.... tonigh I fished one of this whiting and remember this vide and I wanna to fish more of them but I could not ... bad weather. so I cleaned it up and filet it and tomorrow I will do my test. jejejeje thanks men for the video
absolutely delicious fish, they are mostly small but tasty.
Cool video. I tried some blue fish I had in my freezer I caught over the summer. Clean the red meat off and to my surprise was pretty good fried
Cool. I don't think I've ever had bluefish.
I liked it do LOTS MORE
Those whiting look like small red fish. I bet they taste great! Nice bunch.
i love catch and cook on the water
Underrated fishing channel... new subscriber here. Keep up the good work buddy...
Some people considering the whiting trash fish but they don't know what they're missing!
really? i love whiting, probably cuz i grew up eating them. a nice deep fry and they are awesome.
Super good for fish tacos 🤤
Super good fish!
We call them ground mullet where I'm from
I use sandworm lure, I caught 15 of them in like 2 hours. The fish love them.
keep doing this series.
Thanks for the video. Question though: cleaning those whitings, did you just leave the bones in? The way you quickly filleted them, it looks like you just cut thru the bones?? thanks
great vid man. I've lived in florida my whole life on the east coast in jacksonville. Just moved to Pensacola a week ago and tried my hand at some surfcasting about a mile west of the pier. First time I've been skunked surf casting for as long as I can remember. Any tips for this neck of the woods? I think I'm going to try the fort pickens area next.
Another awesome vid bro! Whenever you get ready to come smash some trophy largemouth with me on pickwick lake let me know lol!
keep up the good work
Whiting is the first fish I caught after moving to Florida. Seriously tasty.
When I was a kid we'd slam whiting using sand fleas in Destin.
Good stuff man I love your videos
Thanks
fun stuff!!! ❤❤❤
What are your thoughts on catching live sand fleas and using them for bait? Also, are Fish Bites bait good to use as well? Thank you.
I love Watching fish And I live in England
👍👍👍👍👍👍
Great vid! Do more catch and cook!
I definitely will.
Hey man know I’m 4 years late lol but I live in coastal NC and just caught a mess of Virginia Mullet tonight, aka Whiting, aka sea mullet, aka northern king fish 😂 Great channel, from on die hard fisherman to another
Its cool how trying to make fresh fishing content for RUclips challenges you to do different styles of fishing. Forces you to challenge yourself.
For sure. Thanks man.
I am a huge fan of you
Please try to make a trip to Houston Texas and go to Galveston
Key west fishing also leave comment back😄😀😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎
yes I agree. I love watching both of you guys.
nice video! keep em coming!
Thanks!
Great video man, do you do anything with the heads or racks?
Man I need to taste that fillet !
I love the fact that you show everything from catching to eating the fish, this is the best fishing channel on RUclips now. Do you have a certain brand of fillet knife you like to use, or just a really good sharpener?
Thanks. I usually go with the dexter russells on my charters. They hold an edge nice and are easy to re sharpen. They are also fairly inexpensive.
I usually go fishing for bass to eat but I had a cookout on 4th of July and tasted some whiting that was some good damn eating
*VIDEO SUMMARY:*
*Peel the shrimp & make sure when baiting the hook that the hook is not exposed & depending on distance from water expect 2-4 hours for entire experience (prep equipment, acquire bait & tackle, travel to location, fishing, relocating, return travel time, cleaning fish, cooking, cleaning equipment.*
damn those fish look good.
What’s your rod and reel setup?
Descale cut the fins off gut and cut 3 times each side deep fry !!love them !!
Hey Brant, you kind of skipped some steps in the cleaning process. Do you have to remove scales or skin? I just saw you slice a fillet.
I fish Navarre pier every weekend and I went today and we caught a Bonita and a bunch of cigars. Usually you'll catch 3 or 4 flounder everyday right now
I live in Pensacola Florida and fish on the beach on a daily basis
Cam I just moved to Pensacola what beach do you fish?
Caught about 10 total over the passed two days . Only kept 3 . It seems to take a lot of them to make a good meal .
This is some of the best fish to cook . grilled fried or in the oven its alway turns out good
catch and cook at the spot? great vid btw
Whiting is VERY good eating. Way to go, Brant! It's about time somebody does a feature on Whiting. And they can fight! Almost like a small redfish.
Hey brant, I've seen all your videos and I love all of them. I was wondering where I could buy some of your merchandise. I just got a fishing kayak and I want to represent your channel, by putting anglerup with Brant stickers on it.
Thanks! I'm actually in the process of redoing my online store. I will let you know as soon as everything is back up and working.
Do you know if these are related to our UK whiting?
#healingthroughfishing
we were there yesterday and we caught 12 whiting and 2 pompano's. I have to say whiting is pretty darn good eating
Me already knowing his personality after one sentence “there is no one out there so that’s good “ “hUh”
How did you keep those shrimp alive without an air pump?
I love whiting I usually catch them on cut squid chunks
Yes I caught them on squid too and also croakers on squid
I respect ✊ you this video people don’t look at whiting as a game fish but I love them and they give you good fight. For a small fish they are powerful they will take that rod out your hand.
Let me ask a question. Does anybody know like the fish they use at Capt. D' S. Is that white fish ?
What size ugly stick lite were you using in this video
The best spot to fish in navarre is the pier I live in navarre
Does Pacific Whiting fish have scales?
Are these the same as croakers or are they two different fish?
Never cleaned whiting before.... Do you have to descale them?
Tim Bruse to skin them no, but regular cleaning yes
What Fillet knife is that?
2022 love your vids. Especially catch and cook?!
what pier is that?
How do u get the bones out of the filets?
Brant check out The Hook and The Cook from Australia, love your stuff.
I agree they are a very good tasting fish... the only fish that tastes better in my opinion is croaker but both are excellent to eat... just takes a few to make a decent meal:)
after I ate a whiting and croaker for the first time it was hard for me to use them as live bait to catch reds because they just taste so much better
You should do sheepshead next they are really good to eat and a challenge to catch
Mullet? Around here where I'm from in Texas, mullet have a stigma of not being very good..although it's a mixed reaction..I've never had it so I wouldn't know, can you catch and cook? New sub!
Inshore Addicts Thanks. Check out my video titled snatching mullet off a crowded highway. I ate some in that video I believe.
Set up is allot like a double dropper loop it would be a good setup for you to try plus you can snip the bottom part of the loops to tie the hook on have a lot better luck like that easier to feel the bite and hook fish
I just got back from the beach and brought home some whiting, hardhead, and a sheep head.
I cleaned and got my fillets from the cat and whiting and they were so gross I didn't even bother with the sheep head.
I really do like your fish tasting videos do a multi species fish tasting kind of like a good fish and bad fish and see which one they like better
Thanks. Good idea.
Here's a new idea for vids, the hunt for PB's with all species. Oh and how about getting into sharks?
Why are those white slingy lines in cooked whiting fish?🤔
What hook size do you use for whiting?
At 8:34 he says what hook and size-- size 6 circle hook
Do you skin or scale?
