  • In Episode 32 of the mindfulmaking video podcast you will hear all about my latest finished object the Kuutar pullover and I will share the story about why our family moved from Denmark to Australia in 2012.
Knitting is my mindfulness practice. That is where I set down to breathe to relax and to focus. Knitting nourishes our built-in desire to create and beyond all the mental and health benefits of knitting we even get beautiful wearable garments.

Moving is so hard! We moved from England tonCanada in 1978. Once your kids go to University or meet partners you are there for good!
No one really knows the struggle to settle but each day is filled with joy at learning new things and great sadness at missing family and the old way of life!
I wish you and your family every success!

Hi Lyn. Thank you for sharing your story, and you are absolutely right, having two home countries is both a blissful joy, but is also so challenging with constant new learnings and yernings for family and friends left behind.

Oh waving goodbye was so touching it actually brought tears to my eyes as I had moved away from a very fun large family to southern California to the hottest climate I ever experienced. From Nothern California into the hottest time of the year. Our move was not to another country but it was 110 degrees a far cry from up north. I called my Mom and told her I found hell ! I have been here for 53 years so I am almost used to the hot summers !

How wonderfully brave and dedicated you all are. It’s a huge undertaking to uproot yourself and your family. I admire your fortitude immensely. We are so lucky to have people coming to live here who want to settle into our way of life. So many things to learn, places to investigate, just finding out where the shops are! Where to buy good vegetables, favourite foods. How the shopping experience works, and all accomplished with grace and ease. Congratulations. I also really love the jumper you have made too. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you Christine. Yes, everything was new and many things still are. Whenever we move into a new aspect of life it is learning everything over again. School system, Uni applications, buying a house, learning the flora and fauna (which we have not accomplished yet). We use our past experience as reference but it only takes us so far - and that's not to mention just figuring out the new vocab whenever entering a new field. Well it is lifelong learning, and that's not too bad either.

I love your story Austalia I such a beautiful country I have now been just about all over. In 2017 my husband and I went to Europe and we did a tour of Scandinavia and we started in Denmark and was surprised by all the bikes there ,and how the kids would sit in the big box on the front of the bike .We really enjoyed our time in Denmark and really loved the Tivoli Garden in Copenhagen. We went all over Denmark and now I send to Hobbii in Denmark for yarn. I live in Maroochydore in walking distance to the river and beach on the Sunshine Coast Queensland just north of Brisbane

    • @mindfulmaking

Thank you for sharing your story about your visit to Denmark, Frances. I can imagine how surprised your were with all the bikes. We were very surprised by the lack of bikes when arriving here. We brought all our bikes, but they have only been 'exercised' twice in the 9 years we have lived here. I have a dream though of using the bikes for local errands - but let's see if that dream will just remain a fantasy.
So lovely for you to have the beach and river so close by. Going to the beach and seeing water is something I really look forward to be able to do when the restrictions lift tomorrow (11 Oct).
I am curious. What yarn do you tend to buy at Hobbii ?

Hello from northern California. I am a first time viewer (now subscriber). I am thrilled to have found your podcast today. Your pace, tone and intention are just what I need and look for in spending my time with a virtual friend.
Your Kuutar is outstanding. The yarn choice and color is fabulous. You've inspired me to move the pattern higher up on my to do list!
I thouroghly enjoyed your story of relocating your family. When I was much younger, (1985-87) I chose to relocate to Jordan with my Jordanian husband and infant son. WOW! That's all I can say. It was an experience I cherish, but talk about culture shock.
Anyway, I look forward to your next podcast and catching up with those already posted 😊 Thank you for your contribution, it is appreciated 👍

So I love your new yarn room, all of your yarn and Kuutar sweater. And I really appreciate hearing your journey from Denmark to Australia. Kids are so resilient! I found your channel looking for reviews on Holst Garn. I just ordered 6 cones without ever using it before. Once I found your channel, I've gone back and have watched since Episode 1. I am in Toronto Canada, so I appreciate all of your video of Australia. I have family in Perth, so it is on our bucket list!

Hi Rosie. Wauw, watching all the episodes is impressive. I am looking forward to your reviews of the Holst Garn. As mentioned the supersoft (100% wool) will seem a bit coarse to knit it blooms and softens after the first wash. The darker colours may have excess colour and you should be careful to wash the garments separately the first couple of times. I am currently working on a dark blue jumper for my husband and I walk around with blue hands :-). Those minor inconveniences however also mean the pricepoint is attractive.

I can only imagine what is is like to move to another country. As you know this is a country of immigrants and it amazes me how people are able to adjust. My husband, now deceased, was a Native American and we were very surprised to realize that people from other countries knew more about Native Americans than people who had lived here all their lives. First time here and I so loved hearing your story of moving to Australia! When our sons were 8 and 11 years old we moved from western Canada to eastern Canada to an Innuit village in northern Labrador for 2 years. Experiencing quite severe culture shock after about 2 weeks, I remember closing all the curtains in the house and trying to create a cocoon around myself to deal with all the changes for a couple of days! And yes we adjusted too. I've been working with Holst supersoft and love the fabric.

    • @mindfulmaking
      @mindfulmaking  2 года назад

Hi Edythe. Thank you for sharing your story of the vast cultural differences even within your own country. The adrenalin of the excitement of the new makes the move easy, but is the 'staying' that is the hardest. When arriving, that's when we realise how different the new 'world' is. How did your sons experience those two years?

What a lovely podcast.. I just love listening to you. I wonder, are the flowers from your garden? The wisteria is just so beautiful.. it reminds me of the place where I was born which I haven't seen for many years. After 4 attempts to grow it, I have finally succeeded, and it's now flowering beautifully.. I get to look at it thru my kitchen window & watch the little birds that come in to sit on the vine. A lovely short sleeved tee is the TanTan by Bernice of Yamagara, which I had the pleasure to test knit. It's such a lovely tee, with a gorgeous yoke 😘
Also loved hearing about your move to a new country. Took me back to 1969, when I was 7.. leaving our home land in Europe and arriving in Melbourne on a boat. I started school without knowing a word of English 😆

I moved from Brazil to Canada 20 years ago so I know where you are coming from. It is very hard in the beginning, then like Goethe said, we become "eupatridas" (without countrie), we are not totally Canadians (Australians) and we are no longer Brasilians (Danish). But life goes on and we do our best with the choices we made. I loved hearing your story.

I am in a sort of limbo. I think my heart is Brasilian. I alwyas sing a song that says: :" isso aqui é um pouquinho de Brasil Yaya" (this is a little bit of Brazil). I think my heart is Brazilian, but I love Canada too. But I think if I go to Brazil they will perceive me as a weird Brazilian :) ( I have difficult sometimes finding the words) and Canadians can hear in my voice that I am a foreigner. Luckly for me, Canada has a lot of foreigners... :)

Hi. First time here ;) and will be back. Wow! your story of how you ended up i Australia was quiet similar to how I ended up i NJ, USA august 2006. I moved with my then husband and 4 kids. Similar in age and they reacted just the same way you described yours did. There where a lot of tears (and anger from the 14 year old). The two in the middle was 11 and 10 and a 7 y.o. I did as you: settled in the little town we lived in. Got them started at 3 different schools (high/middle and elementary). As you said: mothers is not aloud in the classroom ;) (Quiet different from Denmark right). My youngest was crying and I compromised with the headmaster that I would sit on a bench, in the schoolyard, outside his classroom, and knit. And that I would do that for a whole week. As you the first three months was all about settling in, making friends, bringing and picking up from school. I also made friends that I still in contact with today. I was not aloud to work in the US :( so after 2 years I had enough and we all moved back to Denmark 2008. Our marriage also ended (thats another story) your story made me remember so many hard feelings of the period before moving, during and after. Feeling guilty for bringing my kids through though times for once and then the divorce. BUT we had good times also. After the first 3 hectic months ;) and as you mentioned our kids learn something valuable about being a alien in a foreign country. Being able to connect to others that are outsiders/ aliens/ refugees seems to be their strenght :)
This was a way to long comment, but I had to tell you. Not often I meet someone who can relate to the complexity of emotions and feelings we experienced. Thank you for sharing.

Hi Thorhild. Thank you so much for your comment. I agree with you, that it is not often we meet people who has experienced these big moves. I can also relate how difficult it must have been for you not to be able to work. As an adult it is important to create our own communities as well, and having work colleagues constitutes a significant part of that. As Danes I think our professions are naturally part of our identity. Hoping you are all thriving back in Denmark. Was it hard to move back? Let's hook up on IG as well. Thanks for reaching out.

Great to hear your family story. It's a big decision to uproot your family and move o a new continent. It sound like I was a good move for you all.
Love the Kuutar sweater, the colour suits you. That touch of yellow brings out your natural skin toned.
Just starting the Kitchener toes on my very first sock. Bit intimidated, but I was by the heel and that went fine, so deep breath.
Since your last video our daughter has given us a new granddaughter, born on the 9th August, Daisy Luna. She's adorable and I had lots of cuddles before we had o leave. She lives on the other side of England. See them all again soon hopefully.

I really like the sweater - the colour suits you very well! Thank you for telling us a bit of your family story. Our family moved every 2 years because of my father's work when I was growing up. I went to 7 different schools so I can imagine a bit of what you went through - fortunately for me the schooling was always in English. Well done to your children and to you for adapting so well!! I am currently working on a sweater called the Big Y (on Ravelry) and I am knitting it using yarns held double: a merino/linen blend yarn together with a kid silk yarn. Simple but very nice. I am loving the wool/linen blend ... Just right for cool spring evenings here in Cape Town! Regards to you and all the viewers in 'our' community.

Hello, I just found your podcast and so enjoyed the story of how you ended up in Australia. What a massive endeavor for your family. I live in Chandler, Arizona USA now. My family, parents and 5 children moved to England 6 months after I was born (my father was in the Navy on special assignment) we stayed for 5 years. When we came back to the USA my brothers and sister had a hard time fitting into the US school system, it was so different from how they had been learning. My experience was so different because I had not been to school. When I started school I was teased so much since I had an English accent and they thought I was being a smarty pants. After making some friends that first year I lost my accent. I have a suggestion for a summer knit 🧶 the Great Falls top (Nomadic Knits) designed by Natalia Polyakov. I have made 2. You can find it on Raverly.

Thank you so much for your kind words and sharing your story. Interesting to hear that even form one english speaking country to the next, you can be teased with your accent, and although it can be hard to fit into a new place it is also a gift to have experienced different cultures and traditions. Did any of your siblings move back to the UK?
Finally, thank you so much for the suggestion for a summertop. The Great Falls top looks amazing, and it has now been added to my favourites bundle on Ravelry.

I love your yarn Library! Where do you get the very large spools of yarn? A yarn store or mill? It’s beautiful.
I have been knitting 2 test knits this summer. 1 for Miss Babs yarn and 1 for an English designer. Both have been sweaters, but I live on the central coast of California and we have had a very foggy & damp summer. So it was kind of nice to have something warm to knit. My family emigrated to Australia, as my mother was Australian by birth . My father was an academic and had accepted head position of the then QIT in Brisbane, My sister , brother and I did not want to live there, as we had been on trips before hand and knew what we were coming to. My brother and I returned to California and I am so happy that we did. We miss our sister far too much and have made many trips to be with her. It is such a very deep sadness to have an ocean between family. My mother was devastated by the separation, so my memories are of much regret.

Gosh I cried! your move reminded me of when my parents decided to return to their birth place, Puerto Rico, maybe two years after I got married at 26 yrs old (56 now!). I cried every day for 3 months! Mind you it's only a 3 1/2 hour flight from New York but still. I couldn't see them when I wanted to, I couldn't have dinner with them, I couldn't cook or lay in the bed with Mom to talk about life. We reinvented ourselves around the new norm but it was so hard for me. They are both gone now and the pain cut just as deep. I can't imagine moving to an entirely different country but you were with your children and your husband and this is everything. I'm still crying lol. Glad you were able to acclimate and help your children. They are so beautiful and grown ja. Time flies. Love your sweater.

Very interesting to listen to your story, I have a similar one, we moved to canada from the Netherlands in 1981, two daughters at the time 11 and 8,in September 1981 they went to school after living here for 2 months speaking very little English. But as you said they learn very quickly. Now they are married we have 4 grand kids, but my daughters still speak Dutch.Cannot read or write but speak yes.We were very fortunate to go back to the Netherlands in 2019, just the 4 of us and that was very special, also was nice to hear the girls still speaking their native language .The hardest parts is leaving behind your family but we survived and love it here.it is a beautiful country but where I live we have long and cold winters.I joked sometimes, specially in the cold winters, why did we move here, since we were emigrating why did we not go to Australia? Both my husband and I are retired now for a long time .I felt I had to share our “moving”story with you.I enjoy your podcasts very much and am looking forward to your next one 🌷🇨🇦

And after washing I could not stop "immersing" myself in the beautiful wooly fabric.
