Getting Better Faster - Painting with 80/20 Rule

  • Many people struggle with not having enough time to draw. One way to get better faster is to maximize the efficiency of your practice sessions. You can apply the 80/20 rule to practice the most important 20% of the concepts many times instead of 100% just once. Setting a time limit with quicksketch painting forces you to eliminate the insignificant and focus on the crucial. In this vlog, I travel out to one of my favorite painting spots in San Diego to do a couple of quick painting studies.

@@EulogyfortheAngels Me too. I'm one of the strange people that both grew up studying art AND went to college for business, so people always tell me those two interests must be at odds with each other. But interestingly enough, that point about failing faster and more often is something that I've heard echoed by both artists and successful business people as well. It makes total sense, especially if you look at each failure as a lesson learned and a step toward success. I hope a lot more artists can realize this as well.

I've actually been dong this recently without realizing it. I've always had troubles creating the frame of a drawing, so as of late I've been going through every single Pokemon (like 800+) and doing a quick sketch of each one, starting off with trying to figure out which shapes best create the frame/skeleton. I really do learn AND fail more this way and it's awesome.

That can also be taken to an extreme, at which point it's not useful. For example, I've seen artists not draw because they didn't want to "dirty" their sketchbook with bad drawings. I think being ok with wasting some materials and trying good quality materials once in a while really has its merits, especially since better quality papers, canvas, pens, etc has a different feel than cheap art materials.

Proko, to avoid getting all entangled in the mess of a palette when painting outdoors, I've custom made a hinged-lid box (one inch deep), with glass palette (mid-tone painted undersurface) fitted inside. After painting just close the lid and secure with a velcro tab. This allows me the freedom to squeeze out the paint without worrying about throwing half of it away after a painting session. Cleaning the glass surface often is a breeze with a scraper. Also Easy to pack up and go.
Great to see you painting en plein air. Love the cinematographic narrative too.

Proko scrapes off all his paint off in the end and I am one of the few who was glad to see him do that. I had a workshop instructor who subscribes to that same idea (end a session by scraping all the paint away and begin with fresh paint every single time). Now, not all of us can afford that...(I still save a lot of mine)...but I completely understand the concept. For another thing, he wouldn't be able to transport the oversized palette in his backpack with paint on it. It's his paint, people...his way. Oh, and many people ask often what is his setup It is a Soltek easel...(he places the homemade palette on top of the open Soltek).

aaaand this is why i prefer watercolor to go outside, then take notes and work later :D (oil lasts minimum 2 days fresh, transport is a problem, not only forthe palette)

I really appreciate how entertaining and funny all of your videos are.. it really stands out amongst a lot lf seriousness.. i was wondering what happens if you start with a quick painting like that, but then you want to add details later..and the paint is either too thick and wet or very fudgy and 3D.. is this how you what start a detailed painting, or would you attempt to have smoother paint on the canvas?
