rackmount gear never left moron. Only guitar players that think they're the center of music universe think racks went away. There's a big music world out there outside guitars.
I saw Steve through the window in this room at NAMM today. People were crowded around outside taking pictures through the windows. I wondered what he was doing.
For all of Steve's genius in playing and artistry, I've never been a huge fan of his tone. He's a legend, a gentleman, and a scholar, and has been a huge influence on my playing, writing, and presence.
Its REALLY annoying live. Very high end treble and LOOOUUUUUDDDDD af!!!!. I literally walked out of one his shows because of it. I couldnt take it. I had the biggest headache when I left.
I think Vai's best tones came from his Carvin x100b's back in the 80's. He also didn't go crazy with effects so it forced him to play more clean and it worked great. Satch on the other hand always had a pretty good sound imo. Especially with his old Marshalls. Technology changes, and so do the musicians' preferences for gear and sound. Sometimes not for the better lol.
Nick Costa Ive seen satriani a few times and he and his tone were awesome. Vai was on another level. It was like nails on a chalkboard and he was way louder than the rest of the band. He was such a poseur too. He seemed cooler when he was with DLR and earlier bands. I just saw him the one time when he had Devin.Townsend. Maybe it was the sound guy that fucked up his sound. Who knows?
Funny how the thin and spanky sound of the Jem is so great but only when he plays it...You can like and respect a certain tone even if you'll never want it yourself. That's perhaps a testament to how much of a master Steve Vai is?
Yea I love the Synergy stuff, really great gear. I keep picking up modules it's addictive. The two unit rack is stereo which is great for stereo FX. Get your guitar swirling around the room! Lastly, Steve at Synergy is a great guy and very helpful if you have any questions.
I met his majesty Mr. Vai many years ago before a gig in Manchester, UK. He let us handle EVO it was the "EVO Experience", posed for pics, signed our CDs etc. I am left handed and played the Smoke on the water riff open on the bottom E string. I could tell he was impressed, I shamed him and his crappy playing. ONLY JOKING Ive loved him since the DLR days - best guitar player in the business IMHO.
Steve is a marvelous guitar player, but it's hard for him to not sound like Steve Vai. When he does these demos it's through his hands and his sound so it's difficult for me to relate to some of the clean tone Fender sounds or Marshall distorted sounds that I'm used to. None the less I love watching him play and his enthusiasm is contagious.
yes, and i've played thousand of Ibanez ( that i still enjoy ) but, nothing works in clean compare to a Strat or the ES335 ; Vai has a particular sound so no matter where is he plugged ha ha !
Just picked up the Synergy (SYN-50) and 4 modules so far. Mind blown! It's hard to justify keeping the dozen Bogner, Friedman, Marshall and Fenders I have.... they seriously might go. The Synergy is THAT good... taking it to the 1st gig tomorrow to give her hell. HIGHLY recommend.... c'mon if it's good enough for Steve Vai!?
@@CameronJohnson And if you're really into the obscure I believe Hughes and Kettner tried something like this even earlier..but it never really got off the ground at all.

I have the Helix Floor with the Synergy Syn 50/50 power amp & 2 Prs 2x12 cabs I'm in love!! It does whatever I want totally !! Clear & Loud Or Quiet As I Want & Very Warm & Responsive It's A Great Stereo Setup As The Syn 50/50 Is Stereo & Mono
One 4U rack case with an Axe Fx III and a 1U power amp will do all this with less cost and back pain. The Axe Fx II will probably be indistinguishable in a blind A/B test as well.

Anybody knows what pedal produces that "hoot-hooot", kind of tone that he has in the intro? I know, it must be some presets from that Fractal FX of his, but like, if there are any independent pedals that give that kind of effect, I would love to know!
