Yea! They arrested all of them! Finally! Our governor just passed new laws against squatting and theft!
DeSantis sooooo did the right thing for his Citizens of Florida. Common sense prevailed. Wonder if other States will follow suit and how soon.
They specifically said in the video that law didn’t help here as it didn’t apply to this situation. The arrests were made based on existing laws and warrants.
The DeSantis law goes into effect in July. Florida squatters are operating on borrowed time.
Now if the rest of the government would do the same thing or even the fed government would do something about it.
nothing to be proud of. elections are coming soon so they need to put up a front.
If you don’t have the proof that you own the house, you’re illegally trespassing/squatting, simple as that.
Or a valid lease. Presenting a fake lease should be felony fraud.
Yeah some people make fake leases and no one actually tries to verify if it's true. It's sad.

Anyone who moved into a house without purchasing it is a squatter and any attorney that thinks squatters should have a right over any property should be put in prison

Well, the 'owner' sadly passed away, that house doesn't belong to him anymore. Legally, those people have every right to stay at an abandoned property. They're not "taking" anything from anyone.

Why the hell did it take so long ? The Mayor and Sheriff needs to learn the law and apply it. Florida statute 810.02 burglary of unoccupied structure. Stop calling it squatting.

@@frankmacleod2565 Yes I did, The issue is the Sheriff sees these people as squatting, When in fact its burglary and you do not need an owner to press changes the county can bring charges. Squatting is when you try to take adverse possession of land. Even though the owner passed away the estate owns until it passes to next of kin. If the next of kin dose not take ownership then you can squat.

That’s precisely why the new legislation DeSantis signed. Come July, all of that red tape is over.
Big problem too is that these squatters know which houses are vacant because real estate companies advertise them. They know just where to go to find that vacant home.
They also use the public libraries free computer services to look them up also.

Sad really. Both the owner and the inheriter died. Home invaders take it over, destroy it and a families memories are gone. Burglars tore it to pieces and destroyed it! So just bull doze it down, they said.

I had lived next to a problem property that had gone vacant. I was very close to suddenly have the structure mysteriously burn down. Unfortunately, it did not happen. More problem tenants moved in because a slumlord purchased it.
I learned a life lesson. Regret is the worst.

This is a simple fix, Owner passed away, Person to inherited the home passed away, No other heiress, Property belongs to city. City is the owner and can remove the trespassers for trespassing on city property.
So a communist society where all belongings go to the state upon death? Nah, this is America. 🤦♂️

The homeowner probably had no children or grandchildren, so after his death, the house was abandoned. Sad to live alone and die alone.

@gndg5351, unfortunately, that's what some old people want; to live alone and die alone. Good example is my 92 year old mom, a big-time hoarder. She is furious that we, her three daughters, have taken over her care and well-being. For years, she forbade us from visiting her and see how she lived. It's a good thing that mom had prepared a POA years ago, and I, the oldest daughter was able to put it into effect after she suffered a cerebral stroke. I am certain that squatters would have taken over her house had we not taken any action and done an intervention. The youngest daughter relocated and moved in with mom. Her place has been cleaned up, we all cook her favorite meals, bake for her, take her to her medical appts, make sure she gets her meds, etc . . . , and she is still unhappy and miserable. No, she is not depressed just very angry she cannot go back to her old lifestyle. So, yes, some old folks want to live and die alone. Go figure.

Wow it's so sad that society has degraded to such a degree that people are willing to not only do hard drugs, but live in a house with a bunch of other addicts in deplorable conditions. Hold your family close and pray not a single one gives up on life like this.

@@HiDefHDMusic capitalism is just an economic theory/system. I think the issue is too complex to say that it's the sole or even primary cause. Cultural degradation could be controlled with a common community value system. Personally, I really attribute it to the profitability of drug trafficking coupled with a corrupt gov't. Example? Prison industrial complex & CIA contra.

That law was a great law to pass but it should have never taken 6 months. That is 6 months of drugs and 6 months of terrorizing the area. Justice needs to just get in, get out and do the right thing when it is happening.

When squatters lose their cases in a court of law , there should be an immediate walk thru of that property. If they decided to trash said house before leaving should earn you an immediate trip to jail where they will be incarcerated for a mandatory minimum sentence of 5 years in prison not camp cupcake!

It’s ridiculous these losers can take over a persons property. And it takes months to get rid of them in court. It’s trespassing people. They seem to have more rights than the person that owes it.
As a teacher, if I knew of a situation like that and I knew I could work the system and claim a property, I would at least take care of it and not call attention to myself by doing illegal activities. Laws that allow people to claim vacant properties never seem to be utilized by well to do people. Just junkies.

There will be an heir of the heir. It just needs a good lawyer to spend about half an hour on it and then the heirs tracked and probate applied to deal with it. If the new owners don't want it the state could buldose it down but the heirs will still own the land.

IF the city wanted that piece of property for a drainage pond, a road widening, or even public parking they'd already own it. What should be done is the property itself should be offered to adjoining neighbors who would pay for demolition and cleanup as their cost to absorb the property into their own. Or the County should demolish and clean up the property and auction off the lot to the highest bidder.
What took them so long to get there and arrest them if it was so "reprehensible"??

There needs to a ONE federal law for "Squatters" with serious penalties, like they have for " hate crimes " or "domestic terrorism" etc. Too many states have too many different laws and it just makes this issue near impossible to combat. Its simple no verifiable proof of ownership? Then you get a arrested and charged for stealing someones home or grand theft, property damage and trespassing. Make it an automatic felony.
