Pet Shop Boys feels so much like the child of Soft Cell & New Order and this song really feels like that. Really great stuff.

Me and the wife was only talking about soft cell this morning. She's ten year's older than I am and was showing me the dance they used to do to tainted love at the youth club disco in the early 80s lol.
She also showed me the made up dance they'd do to duran duran's girls on film. Funny stuff, lol.
This song was pretty good. Definitely getting those 80s vibes for sure. Good effort on their part.

Soft cell . Try “ say hello wave goodbye” as a reaction

    Great reaction as always!
I definitely think this one has more of a Pet Shop Boys sound to it and also the mix of music you want to dance to, while the lyrics carry a sense of melancholy.
From what I understand, the lyrics are about aging and getting older.
But definitely a great song from as you said, two legendary synth groups.

@maelmoor now you mentioned that it's about ageing Purple Zone makes sense as in purple hair..I get it now!

Good man doing this reaction! Neil and chris took this good soft cell song and made it so much better with basically the always on my mind riff, bear looked like he loved it! Dad, now you have listened to this song, you simply have to check out pet shop boys love is a borgeouis construct, or Marc almonds grossly underrated song a lover spurned

I will check it out 😎 and the "Always on my mind' element was definitely obvious, I forgot to mention that on the episode however, ha 😳

As with all Soft Cell songs there is always a dark reality and subtext. Remember “Purple Zones” described zones that were high Convid areas that were locked down, and frankly we all knew how that felt. They will say it’s about aging, missed chances, forgotten romances etc. and yes it is, however it for me it is rather deeper than that having gone through the isolation and dehumanisation of the time it was written and recorded. Lots of people gave up and didn’t survive the being afraid and alone, so as always with Marc’s lyrics they can be read and heard quite differently. But hey, fabulous work from them both!

Actually, my friend it's supposed to be about people who have found themselves stuck in a bit of a rut - in terms of their lives, that's why we are seeing people who are supposed to be in their 40s, 50s or 60s I.e. about middle aged and like Neil Tennant and Marc Almond are saying let's get out and do something about it.
So, the Purple Zone is basically the rut.

    I think Bear loved it!
I liked it but seems more of a grower, a few more listens and I think I will love it. I kept thinking of Purple Rain 😂🌧️

to me it sounds like a carelessly slapped can groove. i think it was also intentional, this cheesy cheap sound from a home keyboard. Even red letter day sounded better, which is based on it in a similar way. I think it was just a fun collaboration between the bands, nothing more nothing less. Nobody remembers this song anymore🙃😉

I gather that Neil Tennant had said that the song was supposed to be about middle-aged people who had maybe found themselves stuck in a rut, and it's just about putting yourself out there again and trying to enjoy life.
I think the Purple Zone is supposed to be some kind of middle-aged rut.

Top tier PSB fan here. Hmm. It certainly pushed an "Always On My Mind" feeling in parts. Overwhelmingly PSBs sounding, more than Soft Cell. I appreciate these fellas getting together for this but ultimately I'm disappointed. It feels a bit shallow. The formula that has worked in the past is there, but now feels a bit stale. I knew about this song for a long time, but held off listening to it.... I had that gut feeling I would be let down. Never mind eh !

This single made me quite sad. Because I'm a fan of both bands (And a superfan of PSB) , and then this single is just...well...I mean... Not very good ( Songwrigting and production wise ) and a bit desperate. It's just my opinion.

Sorry, but it was absolutely nothing to do with COVID.
What it is about is people who have maybe got stuck in a bit of rut (in their lives). Are maybe having a bit of a midlife crisis but what they are saying is let's just get out and do something different.
So I think the Purple Zone is the sort of midlife crisis and it's stopping you from doing the things you really want to be doing.
