The main downside to this movie is how they wrote Steve. Steve is supposed to be a very honorable and good person. In this movie, they made him too much like a creep, and tried to flip it around out of nowhere. I like Chris Pine’s live action version, where he grew up in a misogynistic world, but was so focused on the war at hand that he set that those things didn’t matter to him. It had his relationship with Diana developer more naturally. But the live action Diana was too naive.
@jomiloju ayodele lmfao you need too take a writing class. This is probably one of the lower tier DC animated flims. SHIT WAS ASS. Not the worse, but ass. Nothing unique about Steve. He was weird, went on a stupid rant. Said why he was being an asshole and his arc was just kinda over. Diana was boring and was legit one of the most bland versions of wonder woman too date. Maybe you need too read more comics or view other wonder woman media because this just ain't it bub. And this movie ain't mature either, it was trying way too hard too push a message that was bouncing around way too many spectrums and it should have just focused on the story. Shit movie, shit characters, and shit message.
@jomiloju ayodele The live action movie was the most realistic interaction between Steve and Diana. Is he on an island with only women? Yes. Is Diana hot af? Yes. And he clearly expresses what most men would be feeling in that situation but doesn't act like dickhead because he knows it could get him killed first of all. Second of all he's a mission focused man. A totally different archetype than the Steve shown in this movie and it's the quality that makes the most sense to cause the attraction Diana forms towards him.
@jomiloju ayodele I don't think you're remembering Steve right at all. He wanted the mission done. He was a grown up. But he wanted them wonder cheeks lol and he played the game in a more REALISTIC way while also keeping his head on his shoulders and keeping the mission in focus. And of the two versions of the character ONE actually got the girl before the end of the film lol. And he also was a badass soldier and fighter which I'm not sure how you missed in the movie.
@A Nigerian ninja realism is when misogyny
@@Kade_Kapes Ok incel.
Originally Diana was formed from clay, but that’s been retconned and now she was conceived naturally with Zeus being her biological dad.
I thought they changed it back with rebirth
@@chrisbrown5108 Nope she even has a twin brother now
@@Nathan-yq8en she might as well not because they pretty much forgot he exists
@@chrisbrown5108 In canon, the "made from clay" story was simply a lie by her mother, it be weird and confusing to change it back.
Like in the live action version, Diana thought she was sculpted from clay and brought to live by Zeus as told by her mother, until Ares confirmed the truth that Zeus is her father in the traditional way.
@@strawboyhawkins3 right 😭🤣 dc rebirth was so wack bc they went back to her og origin then they introduced her brother and then they forgot about him💀 then we got Cassie referring to her as aunt still so she must still be Zeus daughter
Personally, I prefer Wonder Woman’s armor with skirt outfit better then the classic one here. It’s more closely accurate to what a an ancient Roman/Greek warrior would wear.
I thought of that before it happened.
Yeah I prefer the Pteruges look also.
Same, I love her new look
Technically her classic outfit (1941) was culottes which soon became thigh-covering Spandex shorts.
They hadn't shrunk to the "classic" "Speedos" until 1969, I think.
Agreed
I watched this not too long ago.. maybe a week and a half ago. Reading the comments, some hate it, some enjoy it. I think my brain shuts off watching DC/Marvel movies and just goes "cool suits and badass fights, neat." So I can miss plot holes and other issues in writing.
Yeah that's the way I am with any James gunn movie tbh, just sit back, relax and have good time.
It's really that simple, just sit and enjoy
Superwoman also made problematic passes at Batman in the other reaction.
These types movies have their messages but if you take it too seriously it's hard to enjoy anything.
@@e-roc6472 true
That's what anyone should do as long as the movie is fun then it's good in My book
I enjoyed the reaction, and I am someone who really enjoys this movie, and I think you brought up certain points in regards to the nature of certain "jokes" and "gags" being made without the proper landing or setup, like Steve not having any initial respect to Diana which makes the things he do come off creepy and wrong or Diana herself bringing up the ironic use of sexist phrases to a character uninvolved in the discussion like Ares. But I do disagree on the area of Persephone, her final words of "We are warriors but we are women too", and what that meant. She (and by proxy the writers) was not stating that a Woman(or anyone else's) natural progression in life is to or should be expected to parent a child, carry a child, marry, etc. But what was being said was the fact, that this is the reality and want of some women (and people in general) like herself. That is what Persephone wanted and that lack of option to said desire or longing is what drove her to someone as manipulative and toxic as Ares. All the while highlighting Hypolita's own hypocrisy by seeking a child for herself in the form of Diana but denying the Amazon's their own choices by stating that she knew better for them and "knew man's world". Its a lesson that people (for better or worst) are never just One thing. Its brought up in many fashions, with Steve and his sexism and false bravado being a mask he wears to cover his own insecurities, Diana and wanting to see the world but not taking note of her massive ignorance of it, Persephone as stated above, and "man's world" itself being "chaotic" or more so unpredictable to how people are.
I hope this doesnt come across as rude or aggressive, I simply wanted to convey the misunderstanding of the line itself.
facts buts it’s expected tbh
I dont think this was aggressive at all! So no worries, I appreciate hearing your thoughts on this. Personally I think I had a guard up from the mess of writing the movie already had and like the way I took it while watching was on the offensive because of the other dumb stuff that had been said. I can see where you are coming from with Hippolyta taking these things away from them, and her just wanting a family. I still am just not a fan of the line, I think it could have been delivered differently or better. Like I think that she could have expressed those desires without the "women" part. They may not be trying to state that all women have to have family's or want it, but I wanted it to be HER desire because she is human, and anyone would want free will to do anything but just be a warrior. I just wasn't a fan.
Facts bro, hippolyta is a hypocrite.
@@KrystalogyReacts Thanks for the reply, I wasn't sure if what I said could be taken the wrong way or not. I totally get what you are saying, the movie kind of wasn't careful and it can be seen as if they generalized Persephone's specific wants with just Women in general. Its does something to a similar extent (though less harmful) with men and how Steve acts on the island for the whole time he is there. Its not until the end that it is told to us that his personal actions only happen because of his personal insecurities. But with Persephone her personal actions and wants don't get a light shined on them until at the very moment of her death, leaving them to not being explained in full. So yea they fumbled the ball with how her words might be interpreted or seen.
Although I (personally) really enjoy this movie, I do acknowledge it has a serious problem with wording and framing of certain characters. Its not responsible with the carful steps to convey what it is trying to do and say, but I still find enjoyment in it because it became an interesting building block for other WW stories later on, with both the mistakes it made and even the slight things it did right.
I can get being put off by it, that is more than understandable. But I do think its one of those movies that needs a second viewing, not because its "great" or anything like that. But because after a first viewing you can begin to digest not only what it screwed up but also the effort it was trying to be put forth, though that is your own personal choice to do so. Sorry if this was long, just wanted to make it clear that I understand where you are coming from and appreciated some of your thoughts on the movie.
thanks for the insight 🙂
this movie was good when i was younger but once i got older i noticed a lot more details and didn’t like it the new stuff they come out with her is so much better
True.
Yeah, it's been a while since I've seen this movie, whenever they show Wonder Woman kicking ass and stuff it was just Queen shit, but the message is more miss than hit and more in your face about it was taking me out of it, it was just all over the place. The animation is good and the acting is good, mostly from Wonder Woman and Ares (who's voiced by Alfred Molina aka Doc Ock)
I knew I heard his voice from somewhere
Wait really? I knew his voice sounded kinda familiar
Wow, I did not realize how cringe Steve was in this movie. This movie did not age as well as I remembered, still better than bloodlines though.
Never seen Krysta heated like that and I understand why. This is what I like about watching reactions from a woman's perspective, it opens my eyes to angles that I'm super oblivious to.
During the reaction, I was thinking "This movie shows the time it was made", but you made a lot of sense when you mentioned that the outside world is not only about women bearing children. We as humans don't fit in one box. even when we are groomed from birth to be that.
On Persephone dying words defense, she a true reflection of where she's from. From her perspective (and most Amazons), they grew up in a time where there was war and the gender roles were not flexible like our day and age.
I think Steve's rant towards Diana is fair, it's brought up alot for wonder woman in other continuities that the amazons are really just big hypocrites, but this Steve is not exactly the best example to prove her wrong lol
while I do think that rant has its fair share of callbacks, I can't really take all that serious when it's a character like him saying it... like, if it was, Idk, maybe Live Action Steve saying it, it would be so much better, not this creep
This was actually my 1st animated DC movie I ever saw. Watched it with my Mom and I only saw it one other time after that😂
23:23 Yeah steve wasn't the best here, his actions don't reflect what he's saying, but I am laughing at your reaction to this moment as if that was some outlandish statement he made, he's just not the guy who can really make that argument in his situation.
Same. Maybe that’s why I didn’t remember anything other than the action in this movie.
I just realized what they were doing with Steve in this movie. Initially, he’s meant to be unlikable, with the way he peeps on the Amazons bathing, and his remarks, and such, but, once he finally opens up and shares his feelings and emotions, it’s supposed to make him more “human” and less toxic, at least that’s what some people seem to believe.
NGL I seen this movie when I was young and didn't remember the whole feminist side of the story mainly jus the action scene but now rewatching it with u I actually really agree with u on how they handle dat part of the story especially Steve character.

I haven't seen this movie in years, but watching it again with an open mind and new knowledge over the years about the DC universe has made me have a different opinion. This movie is rough.
I love this Wonder Woman movie. Great Animated DC movie. A real classic! Also, this movie was made back 2009 so times were pretty different when they made this movie. But I understand why some people don't like some moments in this movie.
No, even in 2009 those moments are weird or annoying. Even Gail Simone make fun of this movie.

You know lot of people prefer this wonder Woman movie than recent animated wonder Woman movie. Hell this was the first wonder woman movie in any medium.
Nice to get a real feminine perspective on this movie. I love it for the mythological stuff that's happening but i could never really grasp, as a dude, how the so-called feminist message would resonate with a women. Still a great Wonder Woman movie, with amazons fighting and all.
Feminine perspective and Feminist perspective are two completely different things.
Yes That's what matters to me the Wonder woman aspect not The politics
I hate when people bring up feminism when it comes to Wonder Woman period. I hate it when writers do it,hate it when Fans do it. I just HATE it. For the most part she’s written to be normal and equally respects both men and women and don’t put one above the other but She’s not a femisnisy Icon she’s just a superhero. Femisnit are a joke of a CULT anyway. So I don’t like when femisnit need to gravitate towards her like that’s their patron saint or something🙄like plz Diana would be EMBARRASSED to be associated with y’all
@@sharpaycutie2 no she wouldn't.. feminism is literally women=men not women over men.. so she is a feminist, I think your stupif

I happen to agree that the writing wasn't the best for this movie. I mostly liked the action in it. WonderWoman is one of my favorite heroes and I feel like the Gal Gadot movies did WonderWoman right. though the version of her in Justice League Unlimited was the best-animated Wonderwoman voiced by Susan Eisenberg.

Loved watching you self destruct with this movie haha!
The movie is a bit dated and definitely flawed. But I still love this movie. I think the messages could've been delivered better. But I think you missed some points imo. The "now you sound like a woman" line from Diana is her way of saying "now you sound like a warrior". Cuz remember she sees women as strong by default. The "we're warriors, but we're women too" makes me think of Suki's line from Avatar: TLA, "I am a warrior, but I'm a girl too". They can be strong and still want basic desires like falling in love, getting married, and starting a family. That can be a man's desire as well as a woman's.
I really liked this when I first watched, and I still like it enough, and while the visuals and action are better here than the New 52 movies, the characterizations for Etta Candy and Steve Trevor are way off.
I feel like they intended to make Ares really sexist like he was in the Golden Age comics, that way Diana throwing misogynist lines back at him would make more sense as her mocking the flaws in his ideology and Persephone's internalized sexism would make sense too... but for some reason the film never establishes this, which leaves Diana's quips contextless and doesn't really explore or challange Persephone's views.
Same thing with Steve, Golden Age Steve had a lot of ingrained cultural sexism, but this was presented as why Diana and Steve couldn't be togher despite their mutual atraction, and as something Steve would need to overcome for their relationship to work. This film seemed to try to have it both ways, both bringing back his sexism (and even ramping it up), but also making him a straight forward romantic partner at the end, maybe because people now only think of Steve as Diana's boyfriend, forgetting how strained their relationship could be in the early years? This could maybe have worked if they gave Steve a full arc where he reflected on and overcame his most major flaws, and where Diana showed more interest towards him, but as is them ending up togheter in the end comes out of nowhere.
Wonder Woman fighting sexism by getting her ass whooped by ares wouldn’t make sense wish she gave him more handssssssss.
Ares has never really been sexist even in the GA. His primary concern is to spread war and destruction for power and fun so he just doesn't acre about gender.
@@dikastederook6380 He has the whole "my strong men will subjugate your weak women" thing which is why Aphrodite creates the Amazons in the first place. In the GA conception of him the two are interlinked.
I've never been able to enjoy this movie. Not sure how it ever ended up this way considering how decent Batman: Brave and the Bold was and them sharing a writer.
WW is my favorite super. I grew up with Greek Mythology.

Love how fluid the animation is in this one, hate the movie story. Also I do prefer the clay origin, sounds a lot more magical and powerful
YES! The clay origin is a classic, and kind of gives a more unique sense to the character
Yeah im glad the wonder woman live action movie kept that origin.
@@vice2versa they didn't, they changed it in the big Ares reveal at the end
Roasting Steve Trevor is becoming my favorite Krystalogy bit.

Yeah I wasn't really the biggest fan of this movie. Krista and her editor covered my issues with the message better than I could so I just say one big issue I have is with the romantic sub plot, It felt like they were trying to do enimies to lovers forgot that they were suposed to fall in love and then just shoe horned in a speach about his bravato at the last minute.
I watched angryjoes review of the live action wonder woman and angryjoe said the animated wonder woman 2009 was a 10/10 so i thought this would be better but i agree a lot of these lines are cringy.
That's wild. I've never seen her cringe so much while watching a movie on this channel 😂😂😂
Agreed, i rarely watch this channel cause i think the girl is a bit annoying but its surprising to see her so heated here lol. Initially she always came across as one of those reactors who like everything so this is kinda refreshing lol.

Not sure if anyone else said it in the comments but… this isn’t Persephone the Greek goddess. It’s the Amazon that just happened to be named after her
Yeah just like Artemis isn't the godess either, but i think she knows.
I think this movie goes a bit overboard with its hatred of men and portrayal of men as all bad. Its very gross and stereotyped. Like Diana really only ever meets the worst men alive when in the wider world? Like being a man is inherently evil, idk it didnt sit right with me. Maybe the intention was for Diana’s own prejudices to be examined but it wasnt done good. Not like say Dawn of the Planet of the Apes where a characters own prejudices were challenged and the protagonist realistically grew to see the error of their views.
Yes that was the point. She was raised to think all men are evil and hate them but then she realised that's silly
I did enjoy your reaction. Was fun. Compared to other DC animated films, it's not the strongest. But it was fun at first.
Man, now I feel guilty being one of those folks recommending this.
I'm sorry for contributing to this.
I'm gonna chalk my recommendation up to the fact I havent seen this for a good few years
I respect you finding the dialogue cringe. 2009 pop feminism does seem pretty cringe by today's standards
I still don't like Bloodlines though =/
Excited for your next recation
holy mother. I watched this when I was a kid and never realized the gender roles thing and the misogynistic comments, even though today We watch it and see whats problematic very clearly, the movie is from 2009, and for the time I think it was progressive enough ??? I guess
We have this nostalgic thing of prefering the old movies over the new ones, as exampled by ppl that say this movie is better than Bloodlines, but CLEARLY Bloodlines is way freaking better, having no misogynistic comments that werent put down, with a gallery of female villains and the most F-ing badass fight between Diana and Medusa, and AWESOME versions of Steve Trevor and Etta Candy, who were supportive of Diana and very funny nice people. Even the whole situation between Diana and Vanessa in Bloodlines could've been mistakenly portrayed as just a petty female rivalry, but Diana keeps trying to save Vanessa and by the end of the movie Vanessa helps Diana as well
Fun fact the Amazon's Artemis and Persephone arent the goddesses they were just named after then as was Diana
They said this was better than bloodlines? 1 million laughing emojis... unless you meant the other way around then.. i misunderstood..
Wonder Woman was born from clay and given life to her by the Gods
In this, what they were trying to do was attack the stereotypes on both genders. The attack the idea that women are weak and need protecting, as well as the idea that all men are misogynistic and oppressive. I do like that they chose to do it... but I wish they hadn't been quite so heavy handed. Doing it they way they did makes it come across very cringy and the message tends to get lost in the cringe.
Well said
Third I love your channel been subscribed for 2 years 😭😭💯
I talked to you on your stream before
The message is simple: "we are warriors, but we are women too."
They lived as Warriors their entire lives. Being mothers and nurturers were pretty much ignored for Warrior pride.

I think that this movie could have done a better job at showing the nuanced perspectives. Essentially that neither men or women should be confined or defined in a singular way.
Great movie
To be honest I watch this as a kid and LOVE It... So I'm rewatching it with this lovely lady here... Haven't seen so let's see since I'm older...
I used to love this movie as a kid, back when I was dumb and not focused on what movies intend to say, much more focused on the animation, battle sequences, epic music and bla bla... but it was until last year when I realized what they were trying to do, and (in my perspective) couldn't achieve.
One main problem I have with this movie is writing... like, you cannot have a character talking about not all men following a "misogynistic agenda" when he is literally an embodiment of the kind of men he's talking about, like, he literally intended to get Diana drunk, like tf? AND EVEN DIANA HAS MISOGYNISTIC DIALOGUES!!
Amazons may be extremists, and hypocritical, however, most of their feelings and thoughts towards men is given to their experiences with them (for one, being enslaved by them back in the day is a primary example), and while yeah, they're wrong since not all men are that kind of way (there's no black and white, there are shades in between, iykwim), Steve doesn't really set an example towards Diana, nor the Amazons
I feel you Krysta it does kind of feel like they’re trying to hard. Also the supporting cast from the last movie and Greg rucka’s second Wonder Woman run was better
Now is time for a animated Superman movie, please.
I've always loved this movie
There’s a really good multi-part Justice League (the Timm-verse) episode where Steve’s portrayal is better (Vandal Savage takes over 1940s Germany and the Justice League travels back in time). Steve Trevor is more like Steve Rogers (Captain America) in those episodes, but I think a lot of the traditional ideas perpetuated in those episodes might not vibe with a lot of people today. It’s a hard pill to swallow, but idealism is a luxury of suffering in the past, and it makes all of the characters (GL, Wally, Diana, etc. ) re-examine their perspectives, something I like to do too. Good reaction, I disagreed and didn’t like some of the arguments Krysta brought up, but disagreement is the instigator of ideas and rumination, and I look forward to seeing more of Krysta’s reactions (personally I’m looking forward to the Young Justice episode “Cold Hearted”)
This animated movie is one of the best in DC animation, better than some Batman/Superman animated movie
I honestly never liked this movie either. But I don’t hate it as much as I would if it were released now rather than in 2009. So I give it some slack because of the time it was released. But it’s not a movie that I’ve watched more than once and ever really wanted to rewatch. But I think it’s a decent movie for what it is.
I agree with most of what was said in this video but, I don't understand the problem with what Persephone said when she died. (switching pronouns) If Persephone's character were a man and said the same kind of thing "We want families and children we are more that just warriors we are men too." It's a good line either way. Can someone explain to me why this line is so bothersome?
For me, I would have rather the approach they took was that yes she wanted a family, but then like not say bc "I'm a woman". OBVIOUSLY anyone can want a family, but society has always pushed the narrative that having a family is the main thing that women should be worried about, which we have pushed out of a bit more now but its still something that women constantly get asked about and are expected to care about. I feel like her desire is completely warranted, but like just say that. I didn't feel that they needed to bring gender into it.
I guess I'd take that line more heavily if wonder woman or the amazons became housewives after that scene but I'm pretty sure she kept her individual integrity by the end of the movie.
A lot of wonder woman's stories bring up gender so I expect it going in. I need to rewatch the newer films to remember how subtle their messages were or not 🤷🏿♂️
@@KrystalogyReacts I get what you’re saying, but I don’t think the movie is trying to insinuate that women should be mainly worried about having children. I interpreted it as saying that the desire to give birth and have children is feminine, even if some women don’t want to have kids. The Amazons not being allowed to have children are denied a right as women, but not an obligation.
I believe Persephone is the wife of Hades in myth and other iterations of Greek mythology.
That's Persephone, daughter of the goddess of nature Demeter, though.
Also you should watch Superman/Batman Public Enemies

I liked this movie.
Ever considered reacting to DC Abridged Universe series? while they focus mainly on young justice, they also did parodies of other dc movies, including this one, and did a pretty good job making it funny, witty and enjoyable. While you should hold on YJ Abridged until you reacted to at least to the first season of the original show, maybe you should give the abridged movies a chance (especially the Wonder Woman one, they address and make fun of some of the themes you mentioned in the reaction).
omg thank you-i

Steve's complaint of women falling for the bad boy, Well he's a bad boy. Even bad boy's are aiming for the hottest girls to settle down with and This could be why he's going for a pairing at the end of this movie for Diana (She's suppose to be the most beautiful woman in the world).
The reason for Diana going for Steve is he's the first guy she runs into and Despite the cheap tricks Steve has done to get her to drop her panties for the score, She doesn't try to look around.
I know of several church going girls who went after the bad boys because they have the experience in bed and If they convert these guys? Then that's a plus!

Yeah in the comics, not in this movie.
She specificaly said in this film in particular not in general. Works has have to stand on their own not just rely on the mythology that has been built before.
