Chaos reigned in Uttar Pradesh after torrential rains, severe thunderstorms and a harrowing lightning parade struck multiple districts of the state since Sunday. As beneficial as the rains likely are for the state’s deficient monsoonal rainfall stats, the violent weather has only spelt trouble for its residents so far.
According to the Times of India, the Barabanki and Rampur districts recorded 320 mm of rainfall each in the 24 hours starting 8:30 AM on Sunday, making them the highest rainfall receiving districts in the state. They were followed by Moradabad (270 mm), Sambhal (210 mm), Hardoi (170 mm), Hathras (160 mm), Kanpur and Kasganj (150 mm each).
As a result of these very heavy rains, overflowing rivers flooded some 173 villages spanning ten districts. In addition to leaving approximately 56,000 people grappling with the disaster, an estimated 21 individuals succumbed to the downpours, lightning strikes, flooding and roof collapses in the past 24 hours.
