Why Scotland Owns A Field In England

  • Why does the border between England and Scotland branch off into a single field on the English side of the river Tweed? Was it just randomly drawn onto the map or is there some history behind it? In this video, I look at the Ba' Green, a small field that is owned by Scotland and has been for centuries after the town of Coldstream won it from the town of Wark in a game of football.

The Jolly Reiver is my project aiming to preserve and promote the forgotten folklore and history of rural Britain. Primarily focusing on folklore and legends, you’ll not find me trying to deconstruct these old stories or trying to rationalise them with science and psychology. Instead I will present them as they were always told by our forebears, and leave the conclusions up to you. Videos are filmed on location to show you exactly where these stories took place.

I own a piece of land my grandfather won in a poker game from his neighbor. It’s not even as big as that field but it is a little over an acre I wouldn’t have if some man years ago hadn’t been so sure of his hand. An acre of added pasture is pretty useful.

There was a time when I would have felt sore about losing an inch of land to the Scots. But since learning how much of my ancestry are Scottish, Irish and Welsh I can no longer see things in such black and white terms. Very entertaining video Reiver.

Excellent video as always, I had no idea this even existed. This is why I love this channel, it highlights fascinating facts about the isles that you probably would not have known otherwise. I also didn't know the Coldstream Guards were named after a Scottish town, I always assumed it was a London connection. This type of video I also see doing well, it makes people curious and click on the video for an answer. Cheers from Canada.

I heard that Coldstream has an English side to it where they were formed (like at the bridge), so they were neither Scottish nor English but 'on the border'?

perhaps all the way up to the Lothians, including the capital should be returned to Northumbria? Or perhaps all the way down to the Tees should be returned to the Scots? Depends when you start the clock of what is England and what is Scotland!

It would be fantastic to revive those matches. Have a yearly game and whoever won gets to plant their flag in the ground until next year.

So fascinating. Like you said, I've never heard of a border being decided by a sports match. Maybe Hearts should play New Castle United for a rematch.

I did a quick search to see if a Wark FC exists, and indeed it does, they reformed it in 2019. I wonder if they know there is an ancient wrong that must be righted?

It may feel like England to some people, it's still Scotland 😀No hard feelings though. 🙋🏻‍♀ A fitba match every year to keep the story alive would be a great idea... a game not a war, mind you. Perhaps you could initiate the event and make a video about it... Contact some popular English and Scottish players to join right in... You'd make it to the evening news showing how both countries can compete peacefully. There's a lot more in common on either side of the boarder than what this line divides. The only problem could be some glaikit fitba ninjas show up and start a fight.

If the Northern English 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 had foresight - We would be living in a Great Country with its Border around Southern Yorkshire.. No Public School Toffs from Eton in Westminster treating us like Serfs.
A question ? Why do the English always vote for politicians that hate them ?
