Hi Eric, This is your best and most valuable video for amateur golfers. I have watched a lot of your videos but I feel that this the most practical and valuable. Thanks a lot.
Wow, so glad I found this video. I know my wrist “breaks” at impact from recording myself but did not know how to properly fix it and this video just did that… amazing!!!

Hi Eric. Another excellent video. I’ve been getting too “flippy” with my hands and club through the hitting area and into the follow through. Having the bowed left wrist lead through impact really helps. I agree with some of the other comments about creating a similar video with the driver. Many thanks
Thanks for the lesson. Back years ago I think they taught this calling it a "late hit". That is releasing the club at the last possible moment and striking the ball as clean as possible. This works well with irons. But modern drivers require a different sweeping swing. Needless to say. I love my old 16 degree driving iron with the ball tee low. I have used it for every thing except putting.
Eric, I have a horrible issue with "dropping" the club shaft in the downswing with all clubs, except my Driver. Watching this video makes complete sense to me, thanks. I cannot wait to strat practing this. I have always had a "cupped" wrist and now that I'm OLD, this is not a good thing! I'll let you know how the practice goes, thanks.
Eric this is what I needed! You’re my go to at the beginning of every season! Hey Eric I’ve transitioned from a strong grip to a more neutral almost weak grip I just feel like I get a better feel through the backswing and along with this drill I feel like I get more lag and hit it better. Also less hooks. Is this okay? I’ve been told to have a strong grip my whole life.
This is great! We need a Part 2... how do the hands and wrists work for the driver? (because impact position is farther forward and past the low point). Part 3 How does this change for hitting fades and draws? for each, irons and driver.
@@CogornoGolf Thanks. I'm heading to a sim tomorrow to work on my hand awareness and then some training. I think the shaft of my driver is lagging (not kicked) and behind my hands because of my swing speed. And this does not happen with steel shaft irons. Joys of finding out stuff.
Good lesson. I would like to hear you talk about the idea of the bowed lead wrist in connection with grip style. For example, the three pros you mention here all have a weak lead (left) hand grip and bowing helps them square the clubface. I suspect that, the stronger the lead hand grip, the less this lead wrist flexion needs to be emphasized. What do you think?

Great stuff! Two questions 1. Does this “auto” get the club to approach from the inside ? I always see my club kicking out in front of the hands when I do shirt practice. 2. Can you do this too much? I find when I try this move with a mid iron it goes like 3 feet off the ground and there is zero speed
Thanks Tim! 1. It will not automatically get you to approach from inside----no. BUT......you need to learn to close the club face to path FIRST then the approach from inside will be easy. I talk through that in more detail may serve you well here: ruclips.net/video/Uxw4BcB_RZM/видео.html 2. For sure can do it too much (can do anything in swing too much)....key is to use video to confirm the amount and WHEN. Also....you have to make sure the RELEASE matches the OTHER parts of your swing. If you have the face closed more earlier you won't nee as much as this. Hope that helps

The OVERALL AMOUNT of supination (and/or flexion) But.... In lessening the OVERALL AMOUNT........you would very likely.....also be doing it SLOWER. So they end up being the same thing.
Hey Mike! Yes, to help square the club face with a weaker grip, you can bow your lead wrist MORE compared to if you had a neutral or strong grip. 2 questions on this. When I've done it before, I can only do it with a fade (noticed your examples are faders) is this to be expected or can you hit draws doing it? Would it be the same thing or similar when hitting driver/
Hey! You CAN do it and hit a draw for sure.....make swing path a bit more right as you do it. Driver DEPENDS on your speed....if you have slower speed you will want to "throw" a bit earlier
Eric, with a stronger left hand grip there is a problem in rapidly closing the clubface through impact if I try to present the back of the left hand to the target through impact. So how to compress? I can get forward shaft lean with the back of the left hand in a strongish position through impact-the fact that the right wrist is slightly cupped at impact demonstrates the forward shaft lean. Problem though is that I can't rotate forearms through impact as clubface closes too rapidly. I think what happens is I tend to flip post impact. So what is the theory here? Pretty sure Freddie and Bernhard get all the compression they need!!
Agreed.....stronger grip would have less of this you would have wrist LESS flexed and LESS lead arm supination Need to get hands forward from the arms getting off our chest and/or a bunch of body rotation ruclips.net/video/S776LyvM6Pc/видео.html ruclips.net/video/8Cg2O8atmYY/видео.html ruclips.net/video/3QQUyRnRSJU/видео.html
Bro, I had the same issues. My flip was due to chicken winging after impact. Have you tried the L to L drill at 80 to 90% speed? It did wonders for my impact and post impact positions. One of my two top drills that I use to get golf ready. My ball striking is off the charts and I enjoy low rounds because of it.
Flipping post impact will not happen provided you keep on rotating and extending in your follow thru. Forearm rotation will naturally happen , but this forearm rotation will happen later if you keep on extending and rotating
The opposite Check these on the topic I did in detail: ruclips.net/video/S776LyvM6Pc/видео.html ruclips.net/video/8Cg2O8atmYY/видео.html ruclips.net/video/3QQUyRnRSJU/видео.html
Hi Eric. I’ve worked with this a bit with my instructor but find it only useful with irons. With hybrids, fairway woods, and especially driver I found that this method ends up causing snap hooks. What are your thoughts on using this hand feeling with woods?
I know that this is absolutely correct every since I read Hogan's book 30 years ago...but I hit hooks...always and forever. Which has taught me to hang on for dear life and not make any effort to rotate my forearms or turn down my wrist. If I do, I can hit a 35 yard hook with a pitching wedge.....and smother hook my driver
No worries......sounds like you just have the club face quite a bit closed EARLIER.......that works as well, just need the EXACT opposite feels as this video LOL Release feels for stronger grips here: ruclips.net/video/S776LyvM6Pc/видео.html ruclips.net/video/8Cg2O8atmYY/видео.html ruclips.net/video/3QQUyRnRSJU/видео.html
I would also add that knuckles behond wrists low point moves forward and left hand going UP key being up adds effortless parametric acceleration speed Anyone who short circuits this as you are showing os losing deep losing power consistency and speed Take it from an older player speed......effortless speed is everything
Dear Eric, I`am the opposite, I`am a body player. It works very good, I make the power with the body. But I don't use the potential to keep hitting further with my hands. Do you have also a video for us body players? Thank you, Erich
Hey Erich! You may enjoy checking out these two videos👍 ruclips.net/video/OtUwWhYrbho/видео.html ruclips.net/video/xLl97_O653U/видео.html Thanks for watching!
One further caveat on the strength of the LEAD hand grips.Unless a golfer has extraordinary wrist mobility ( Dustin Johnson) , it is virtually impossible to have the LEAD wrist bowed or even flat at impact with a strong LEAD hand grip. Players with strong LEAD hand grips will typically have their lead wrist slightly extended at impact , but it will be LESS extended at impact than it was at setup. That is not to say that that you are wrong in the hand movements that you are demonstrating , you are correct. But , the goal at impact is not necessarily a bowed or flat lead wrist at impact . Colin, Jon and Tony all have weak LEAD hand grips;thus, their lead wrist can be bowed at impact. I have argued that a good lead hand position at impact is the other side of the coin of rib cage rotation . Good hand positions at impact seems to encourage rib cage rotation and vice versa . Together these two actions also result in a slightly bent trail arm and right lateral bend at impact.
Agreed Dave---Grip matters for sure with this. Went over that in detail previously here: ruclips.net/video/S776LyvM6Pc/видео.html ruclips.net/video/8Cg2O8atmYY/видео.html ruclips.net/video/3QQUyRnRSJU/видео.html
@@maeu59 I mean a forklift steers from the rear wheels haha, nah but different stroke for different folks I feel it all in the right hand, think tiger also says something about his feels shots with the right hand
@@bigboy9842 Tiger said years ago he felt like he was hitting it with the back of the left hand, I myself use more right side, but can tend to be OTT if too much force is applied, like rear wheel drive in the snow, try pushing a bike without holding the handlebars. It’s a combination of both, left arm sort of like a rudder and the right arm is the engine, or even left arm pulling from the top and right arm pushing down at the bottom applying pressure to the side of the shaft, but both arms working together. Everyone has their feels and there are so many ways to swing a club, just look a the PGA tour. Now whether you have neutral, strong or weak grip it affects the wrist conditions. Where it gets confusing is when someone watching only this video might start applying this to their golf swing and never get it to work, then they move on to something else and then something else. Yes Eric has other videos on wrist conditions but it would be more beneficial to stick to the one he actually uses and teach that. Throwing all kinds of ideas out there just confuses the viewer.
There’s a lot of talk saying how bowing of the left wrist is a weak position, I’m surprised you’re endorsing this move especially after your work with Malaska. Yes this works but requires a lot of timing and arm rotation. The trend now is a stronger grip and lead wrist extension. If you hammered a nail with this motion you would you will see it’s not the best. Shawn Clement demonstrates this in all his videos.
Thanks for the input here! Of course.....as evidenced by all of the great golfers of all time....both can work. Strong grip/less rotation IS NOT.....is not....better nor easier for everyone. Weak Grip/more rotation IS NOT....is not....better not easier for everyone. If I see 10 great ball strikers I usually see 3-4 weak grip, 3-4 normal, 3-4 strong. I would suggest (based on 15 years of coaching and studying) that you be careful not to fall into a "this is the right way"....I've learned the hard way 1,000,000 times that that can lead you astray. All the best!
I think u should do a vid on the forces that u feel on the down swing regarding where u feel the center of mass moving that puts your wrist in this position - this ideal impact position is more a result proper intention more than a static position it’s a byproduct. It would be beneficial to higher handicaps Where do feel u you are throwing the center of mass club from the top ??
Noted how PRO hands behave, however is it not better not to thing about these things during the swing. Seems better to have quiet hands which should behave naturally in swing
Hey! Perhaps....I hear ya and "no hands" is nice in THEORY....but of course when actually measured the best players use their hands A TON! Now are they THINKING about it? Not now. Did they ever? Maybe. Do WE need do if we dont do it without thought? You betcha
“180 degrees of rotation in a short period of time.” Yikes. That also means there is a lot of face rotation through the hitting zone. This lends itself to a difficulty in timing the contact from day-to-day, particularly under pressure. “Timing is the enemy of golfers.” - David Duval. This also explains why a good amateur golfer will shoot 72 one day and 80 the next. “I don’t understand it. My swing feels the same!” With all that face rotation, there will be misses right *and* left. When you are late closing the face, right miss. When you close it too early, left miss. Army golf.
Yeah I hear ya....and I thought the same.....but 180* is just NORMAL. Check out some 3D measured info like GEARS or AMM and you will see the reports like I did....which is.....even the players who have LESS FACE ROTATION.....still have a whole heck of a lot lol Check your favorite swings in slo mo and track the back of the glove logo like I did or see GEARS info and you will see the same thing I have. I have been studying those slow mo swings for 15 years and have yet to see it any different
i sorta have to disagree with this explanation... People that don't understand the swing would be forever stuck... the nice swings look as if they are maybe trying to come through bowed and they are at impact slightly but that's not actually done the way your explaining it they are not trying to keep the lead wrist bowed it just happens to be in that position at the instant of impact they are trying to fire and are firing the whole time
Yep agreed Mauritz.....this is DEFINITELY opposite of what Mike likes (and a lot of teachers) Thats all good.... The way Mike likes to release works great if you have the club face more closed EARLIER This works great is the face is LESS CLOSE earlier... I would also add that knuckles behond wrists low point moves forward and left hand going UP key being up adds effortless parametric acceleration speed
Anyone who short circuits this as you are showing os losing deep losing power consistency and speed
Take it from an older player speed......effortless speed is everything
Thanks so much for watching, Richard!
Dear Eric, I`am the opposite, I`am a body player.
It works very good, I make the power with the body.
But I don't use the potential to keep hitting further with my hands.
Do you have also a video for us body players?
Thank you, Erich

@@CogornoGolf Yes, I look, thank you very much!
Went over that in detail previously here:

“Wrist bone” 😄
:)
I think Erick has Winn grips becase his glove is black on the palm.
Thanks for watching, Norman! :)
Yeah I honestly think the same, so does players like Justin rose who says the right hand is his steerer
Justin certainly has a great swing!
Great players know how to use HANDS and BODY well
That’s like saying the rear wheels steer a car. Like Malaska says the left hand squares the face and the right hand pressures the shaft.
Benderized
:)
It looks like natural hand and wrist positions if you want proper shaft lean. Keep it simple I guess.
Depends some on your grip of course!
@@CogornoGolf yes sir; you don’t want to be too weak. 2 to 2.5 knuckle will produce it. Thanks
It would be beneficial to higher handicaps
Where do feel u you are throwing the center of mass club from the top ??
It's very important if you have a strong grip do not bow your lead wrist.
Check out some 3D measured info like GEARS or AMM and you will see the reports like I did....which is.....even the players who have LESS FACE ROTATION.....still have a whole heck of a lot lol
Check your favorite swings in slo mo and track the back of the glove logo like I did or see GEARS info and you will see the same thing I have.
I have been studying those slow mo swings for 15 years and have yet to see it any different
i sorta have to disagree with this explanation... People that don't understand the swing would be forever stuck... the nice swings look as if they are maybe trying to come through bowed and they are at impact slightly but that's not actually done the way your explaining it they are not trying to keep the lead wrist bowed it just happens to be in that position at the instant of impact they are trying to fire and are firing the whole time
Appreciate the feedback!
Opposite as to what Mike Malaska advocates.
What if there’s more than one way to swing a club 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯
Yep agreed Mauritz.....this is DEFINITELY opposite of what Mike likes (and a lot of teachers)
Thats all good....
The way Mike likes to release works great if you have the club face more closed EARLIER
This works great is the face is LESS CLOSE earlier...
