  • It was a very cold start for our Caterpillar D6. The snow banks were too big and frozen for my pick-up to handle. So I used the good old Cat D6.

A long time ago I knew an old farmer who worked in the woods in the winter. He had connections for the cooling water and hoses that he connected between the tractor and the forest machine. When he brought the tractor to the forest machine he connected the hot tractor to the cold forest machine and it heated it up. When he returned to the tractor in the evening, he connected the hot forest machine to the cold tractor. With the tractor in a warm garage he did not have to sit in anything cold, all winter.

We had an Iron Mule forwarder with a turbo 4 cylinder ford and a funk power shift trans that was really cold blooded. Water would get in the shift cables and freeze. We worked on it half the day to get it going so the next day we fueled it up and parked it in the woods and left it running. The fuel we wasted we got back in time running the next morning!

  • @retiredwelder

You got way more snow then we do here in Maine. We got some catching up to do lol. Your power stroke starts very good!! I’m glad you have good luck with your glow plugs!! My Cummins don’t have glow plugs. It has a heater grid that warms the intake air. When it’s over ten below I just cycle the wait to start like three times. And it usually fires about a half a crank. Love that dozer. Sucks the six way isn’t power. We’re supposed to get 5-9 inches of snow tomorrow. So I’ll be out plowing tomorrow night. Maby I’ll try taking a video of my old 12 valve Cummins plow truck!!

It has to be COLD for a 6 to roll like that warming up. Can't beat an angle blade with a tilt. I learned on a square blade so a tilt was a different world. Last 6 I ran was a series 'R'- XL Hi-track at the boulder hole. Arthur don't like wrist steering much. They used to have a 7-F which was a nice tractor but I liked the 'E's with a straight pipe. The old 4-banger would talk to you! And you had a winch if you sunk IF there was a tree there big enough to pull from. Wished I was there because I like to run dozers too!
