First became aware of “The Enz” back in 1976 when they had embarked on a UK tour.. There was an evening post main television news regional magazine programme on London ITV where they showed a short clip of one of the concerts and I was stunned by the visuals and music. Then a few days later, Rock DJ the late Alan Freeman played a track off Mental Notes.. I was hooked and rushed to my local record store to order a copy.. Still have it and it’s still plays well. Love the Mellotron in Time for a Change!
These songs have always given me goosebumps, and Mental Notes is one of my favourite albums - so far ahead of its time in NZ. Could have done without the distracting "special effects", but I guess it was de rigueur back then. Thank you, Phil Judd, for helping me get thru shit high school.
interesting isnt it. Split enz did all these commercial ditties later. yet these are the melodious ones that move the heart. would have blown a few Aussies away first time.
Happy belated, Phil! Ever since I discovered Split Enz, I cannot be thankful enough to have this channel saved way up high on my list. I love your music and I hope you are alright wherever you are.
Great, great band, especially the 'early' days. First saw the Enz supporting Billy Thorpe at Blacktown Showgrounds (I think it was 1975, 1976 at the latest) and whilst the bikies who'd come for Thorpie didn't dig them, as a 15yo I was blown away. Saw them time and again after that.
Weirdly good shit !. Split Enz inspired me back then. On ya Phil. I havn't seen this clip before. I was 15 back in 75 the year I bought my first drum kit & taught myself to play,.. much to my neighbours dismay. What did GTK stand for ?.
"like a parrot in a flaming tree its pretty hard to see"....Thank you Phil

Phil Judd - simply a genius. A rare talent indeed.
I wish there was a clip for Home Sweet Home, love that song 💙🙏🏻
Love all these old clips ❤ amazing ❤

Yes, very difficult for TV producers at the time to resist what was then a new box of tricks. But the visuals add nothing, unfortunately.
Thank you so much for this bonkers goldmine.
husband and I had our first sorta date seeing the Split Enz in DC at the Cellar Door in 1977. We are still together. I wish they were.
Didn't know this footage existed. Brilliant songs. Loved the versions on 'Second Thoughts.' The 'brass' made a big difference to those recordings.

Such a treat to hear them play this complex and incredible music live. Wow.
Will we ever hear music of this complexity again...? Does the intelligence, and musical literacy still exist?
It's a rare day when I wish I were older...

Fantastic! Brings the memories flooding back

Absolutely amazing, thanks Phil
Just amazing!!
pressure from Gudinski and Mushroom to go more commercial was a tragedy IMHO
