How to Light Portraits Professionally (WITHOUT EXPENSIVE EQUIPMENT)

  • This video shows how professional photographer, and Panasonic ambassador, James Schmelzer uses shadows to indicate lighting positions on the subjects he is photographing. The only equipment used in this tutorial is a Panasonic Lumix G-9 and a Lumix-G-Leica 425 mm/F-1.2 lens. There is no need to use expensive, and heavy lighting equipment if you know how to position the models correctly using shadows and the sun as a guide.

    The photo at 3:42 - Without artificial light, how can you get the butterfly shadow under her nose?

      In the beginning of the video I try to show how to find light bouncing off of the windows in the tall building and where to place your subject , then its just tilting the models head into different lighting patters .
