If you have access to a large format printer (some libraries have them, if not a UPS or FedEx office will have them) that is the best way. Otherwise you can print the template out on 8x11 of 11x16 paper. Just make sure to print it at 100% it will print across multiple pages and you can tape them together.
I built 2 from your plans. Made a couple changes by adding a wedge between the legs and the body so the legs would have more spread where they attach to the rocker. Thank you very much for the design. The grandson loves his horse and I'm sure the great-grandson will love his.
To print plans on 8.5x11 paper. Download plans and save to computer. Open plans with Adobe Reader. Select- print in Adobe Reader. Select- poster. Select- tile scale 100%, overlap .005. Select- only tile large pages. Select orientation - portrait. You will have to cut and tape the plans. This did it for me. Enjoy
Thanks for sharing your plans. They were excellent. I actually made templates out of 1/4" hardboard so I can easily repeat as grandkids eventually start to arrive. I did make some modifcations to the design, i.e. the mane, tail and eyes, to mimik a different design that I have seen. Wish I could include a picture of the finisghed product for you to see. I am very happy with how it worked out. Thanks again.
i'm having trouble printing the templates. i have the size set at 100%, but am only getting part of the template. I've tried setting to landscape and also portrait with no success. I admit not being computer savvy
Great video. Thank you. I am going to modify this somewhat and try making two rocking mules for a fundraising auction. We have a mule farm and I am hoping the mule rocker will be more novel and therefore raise more money. I could not print the plans but will ask my daughter since my challenge is likely generational - - so to speak. Merry Christmas to all!
That is awesome! I'm sure they will be a great item. It's really best to print these templates on a large format printer, if you have access to one. Otherwise you can print them off on regular sized paper then piece them together. But some people have had trouble with that method. Good luck!
Great job! Can you just clarify, in the video you use 2x10 but the plans show 2x8. Which should it be, and how do I scale the whole horse to come out the same size as yours?
How did you know where to attach the legs on the torso so that the hooves ended up perfectly on the front and back rocker slats? Also, how do the dowels stay in the holes without moving around?
I'm also wondering about where to attach the legs to the torso. I'm almost done and went back to see where to drill the holes on the torso, but they are not on the plans!
Wow, well this is certainly late. I did not know I had these questions. Now it has been so long since I did the horse (which turned out great by the way). I believe I just looked at the horse in his video and placed the front and back ‘cross-beams’ roughly where he had it. Then I put one of the front legs flat on the beam (you’ll have to add the total width of the legs and body to determine where on the cross-beam to place it) and screwed it on from under the cross-beam (use pilot holes so you don’t crack the beam). You will have to do the same thing on the same side for the back leg. Once you have both of those legs secured you can hold the body up to both and determine where the holes should go. Might need someone to help you with this as it needs to line up perfectly after you drill the pilot holes on the body. Then it’ll be easy to place the legs on the other side to the body. Hope that helps anyone else in the future.
good one! i want to make one of these. grandson will be walking soon. well before i get this made but im using your video exclusivley. wish me luck... New Subber.
I see the drawings but when they print I only get the left side of it,not the whole picture enlarged onto 2 pages for size, what do I do to get the full size to print? Thanks
Hi, can anyone tell me the length of the rocker please and the width at the bottom. I dont have access to a printer and so cannot print off the template but with a couple of measurements I can work out the rest. Thank you in advance
hey mate havin trouble printing the legs and rockers to scale on A4 paper.... have the scale set to 100 but it just wont print the of cuts... any suggestions?
I love the build so much I decided to build one. My question for you is what is the distance of the gait between the back and front legs on the rocker or it does'nt matter once the seat is horizontally level.
Not a dumb question. They are scaled in the file so you can print them off on a large format printer at a FedEx or other store. Also you can print them off on regular size paper, but you'll have to tape all the pages together to make the full template. Just make sure when you print it that it's printing at 100% size.
This is great! Thanks for sharing your build video and plans I will be making one of these for my daughter very soon. What was the thickness of wood you used? I think I should be fine with 2" lumber.
I'm somewhat of a newbie woodworker so I'm curious as to the purpose of the "relief" cuts you make? Thanks and I'm planning on trying this out for a friend who's expecting in November!
They break up a long curve cut in to smaller sections. If you're using a jigsaw they are not as necessary. But with a bandsaw you can get the blade stuck in a long or small radius cut. The relief cuts give you an out, so you don't break your blade. Good luck and have fun!
So simple question I hope, since you seem to be really good with your Band Saw. When you're cutting legs out for example I noticed you make 3 or 4 cuts in first, then do the contour, do you have a reason for each of those, like angle of curve, or is that just a habit you picked up to make life easy?
Those are called relief cuts. I have no exact science to when/where to cut them. Simpy, the tighter curve you cut the more relief cuts you will need. It also helps you not get stuck in a long cut. So if you get off track you have a place to start over.
How old is your son on this video ? I want to do this for my brother's son but he isnt born yet and I wonder if he'll be too young for a big horse like that, maybe I should wait until he's 2?
In the video you say the body is made from 2x10. in the plans it says 2x8, also the way you glued the body up in the video is different from the plans? I did what the plans say and that's as far as I've gotten so far. Should I do it like you do in the video or like the plans say?
Two little boys had two little toys Each had a wooden horse Gaily they played, each summers day Warriors both of course One little chap then had a mishap Broke off his horse's head Wept for his toy, then cried with joy As his young playmate said "Did you think I would leave you crying When there's room on my horse for two? Make sure when you print it off you print it at 100%. Don't resize to fit a regular 8x11. It'll print off in multi pages and you will have to tape them together.
Do you know where the original came from? My son just got the same one today but I don’t know where it’s from. Also beautiful job!! I think the white looks great

That is awesome! Great idea to make a repeatable template.
Made this and it turned out great! coincidentally, I also followed the step of breaking my bandsaw blade. so much for it being optional...
Thank you very much for your plans. I must now figure out how to print them to form the exact template. Thanks again.
thank you Sir - great grandson's birthday next month he will love it
Awesome to hear!
Thank you for the plans! Just finished making one for my toddler for Christmas. Can't wait to see her reaction :)
Thank you for the plans, I plan on building this for a friend
Thanks, I've always wanted to try and build a rocking horse.
Your son is so adorable.. love the rocking horse.

How do you attach the tail. I cannot see in video
I downloaded the template but I don't any measurements for placement of the legs on the horse or on the rocker parts. Can you help? thanks
How did you attach the tail?
Thank you for sharing the project. It was very good!

That at the end makes it all worth it. Congrats man.

I used Pine.

To keep the horse in natural wood, first use Danish oil, then finish with a good marine spar varnish.
I’m having trouble printing the plans. The images keep getting cut off

hi my friend, great job, i cannot find the link in the screen for the plans.Cheers juan

Im definitely going to try and build this. Can you tell me the hight and length please.
I hope this doesn't sound silly but...would it work if I made it out of cardboard?
Only one way to find out...
Excellent video, thank you for sharing, the templates are great too. I guess when printing them you need to upscale in size ?
How can i print the template out to the correct scale?
How do I get the planes
And where is the later modified adult version? ;D

Very similar to step one of how to become a multimillionaire. Start with a million dollars.
Is it 2x10 or 2x8

Two little boys had two little toys
Each had a wooden horse
Gaily they played, each summers day
Warriors both of course
One little chap then had a mishap
Broke off his horse's head
Wept for his toy, then cried with joy
As his young playmate said
"Did you think I would leave you crying
When there's room on my horse for two?
Climb up here, Jack, and don't be crying
I can go just as fast with two
When we grow up, we'll both be soldiers
And our horses will not be toys
And I wonder if we'll remember
When we were two little boys" I know, sorry, it's rolf harris but sentimental all the same.

I printed the template out and it’s not to scale how you print it to scale?
Make sure when you print it off you print it at 100%. Don't resize to fit a regular 8x11. It'll print off in multi pages and you will have to tape them together.
Home Depot is where I always go to buy my trumpets.
They do have high quality trumpets there!
Obrigado amigo, vou fazer um, Brazil.
The link to print out the template does not work!!
I sent the link to my local copier place, they managed to print it all out perfectly.
Where can I take the drawing in pdf to make it happen?
The drawings template are scaled. If you print them off a a large format printer they will be the correct size.
Yes, but I do not know where to take the figures to cut out the pieces
What kind of wood did you use?
Southern yellow pine.
Do you know where the original came from? My son just got the same one today but I don’t know where it’s from. Also beautiful job!! I think the white looks great
We got it second hand, so it have no clue where it came from originally. But it's a great little horse! Thanks
