Tbh I would have been 12 or 13 when this film came out, and I remember wondering why these kids were clamouring for He-Man at that point in time. The kids of 1989 had already largely moved on to other toy/cartoon properties like the Ninja Turtles. He-Man and the Masters of the Universe had been more of an early to mid-80s fad, so it always felt like an out-of-touch adult had written the birthday scene. However, while it already came across as a dated reference to a 13-year old me back then, at least audiences of the time still actually knew who He-Man was. I know Mattel has tried to bring it back a few times now, even recently on Netflix, but I guess MotU hasn't quite established enough of a historical foothold in pop culture to be more widely known amongst the generations after Gen-X.
Actually He-Man is a Filmation property and it might be a swipe at them. But more appropriately at time both He-Man and the Real Ghostbusters were on in the same time slot, and Real Ghostbusters was more popular than He-Man. So those kids are out of touch.

Funny thing about Ghostbusters II.... two key sub plots were cut down and shoved into the montage. The first is Louis and Slimer where Louis tries to bust him in the firehouse (Part of this is seen during the montage when Louis sees Slimer eating his lunch, and also during the end credits where Slimer is credit, that clip is of Louis seeing the spud in a mirror he has set up to look behind himself while wearing a proton pack).... and other is Vigo possessing Ray when he is taking readings while Peter is taking pictures, after the leave the museum, what we were supposed to see was Ray going nuts and wildly driving the ECTO-1A, the only clip of this is during the montage when you see Peter looking concerned while wearing the same clothes he wore when taking the photos. This entire sub plot would have tied into why Vigo so easily possessed Ray at the end of the movie
For more Rick Moranis hilarity, I highly at this stage recommend you watch "Space Balls". It was released only 4 years after the original Star Wars trilogy, and you've watched those now, so you'd get the references. Rick Moranis' lines in the "Ludicrous Speed" scene are hilarious.

Peter MacNicol is criminally underrated. He was great in this, he STOLE "Dracula: Dead and Loving It" with his dead-on Dwight Frye, and he's definitely in the Top 3 Doc Ocks.
Dan and Harold both wrote the scripts for Ghostbusters, Ghostbusters 2 and Ghostbusters: The Videogame (which was considered by many to be Ghostbusters 3 until Ghostbusters: Afterlife came out).
The Real Ghostbusters cartoon was insanely popular after the first movie, so its style filtered through to this sequel - if youve never seen it, I can recommend at least the first season or two of the cartoon, the writing is often brilliant and it can be very funny! Its the reason I grew up wanting to be Egon 😅
True. Brian Doyle-Murray. I addition to this one, he's actually appeared in several movies with his brother including Caddyshack, Scrooged, and Groundhog Day, among others.
Peter Macnichol in this always killed me, with that accent.. So funny.. His performance in this is so under rated. I forgot Bill Murrays older brother plays the Dr. for the insane asylum. Man I haven't watched this in many years.. so fun..
Janosz holds a special place in my heart. To this very day, people in my family still call trivial things a "Buzzing of flies!" just because of this dude.
My cousins taped this off HBO for me and it didn't leave my VCR for a solid month. I opened my piggy bank and bought myself the soundtrack, bought the comics and started pining for a GB3. Now that I'm older I understand why GB2 isn't as favored since it follows the same story structure as the first but I still love it. The jokes are great, the ghosts are awesome and the soundtrack is still an absolute bop.
Oh yeah, Bobby Brown, 1980s boppin. The song "On Our Own" came out when I was a fourth grader, and my classmates and I would sing it at recess. It was simply too cool to me as a 10-year-old in the '80s.
The family-friendly thing is a good catch. Between this movie and the first one, there was an animated show called The Real Ghostbusters (that's a whole thing about an old Filmation show) and this movie was changed to be closer in fit to that, even going so far as to have Ernie Hudson (Winston) shave his mustache because the Winston character in the cartoon was clean shaven.

I grew up watching the ghostbusters movies, my mom introduced me to them as a kid and have loved the franchise ever since! RIP Mom Thank you for reacting to both movies Cassie.
Did I enjoy this reaction? Is the atomic weight of cobalt, 58.9? I agree with Cassie that the sequel is not as good as the first movie but is still really enjoyable with some great laughs, with Bill Murray once again providing most of them. I was a bit disappointed that the potential romance between Egon and Janine that was hinted at in the first movie was not followed up, but Janine's and Louis' make-out session was very funny. I do like how tall Egon's hair was in this one. You're correct, Cassie, in assuming that the sequel was more kid friendly. By this time, _The Real Ghostbusters_ Saturday morning cartoon (which I never missed, as a kid) was a huge hit. One noticeable difference is how several of the characters smoked in the original film, whereas none of them smoked in the sequel.
there were some deleted scenes in this movie including dan Aykroyds character being possessed by Vigo and driving around but not much else was told about that
The birthday party scene was inspired by a guy named Peter Mosen, who showed up to the theater in full, homemade gear for the first movie. He was contracted by Sony to do birthday parties in the '80s, and my mom got him for my 6th birthday party. He and a friend showed up as Ray and Egon. He is the man Ray throws slime on in the restaurant.
That this was more family friendly is actually a very good observation. It was made that way because in 89 when this movie came out there was a really popular cartoon based on the first movie (That ran all the way til 92, I believe) They wanted the fans of that to be able to watch this movie. That's why the Slimer ghost is like the Ghostbusters pet and roaming the firehouse freely, as he was "adopted" by the team in the cartoon. Also, the kid that talks to Ray and Winston about them being frauds is Jason Reitman, the son of the director. Jason is directing the new movie that will come out later this year. Great reaction!
25:33, The Ghostbusters are basically super heros. They're the only ones with the knowledge and the tech to do the job. And yes, the second movie was more family friendly. thats because of the success of The Real Ghostbusters cartoon. The studio was trying to lure in more families and children, which is understandable, but it was definitely less scary but still very enjoyable.
Unfortunately, soon after this movie, Harold Ramos, Egon, directed Bill Murray in Groundhog's Day. They fought and disagreed so much it destroyed their relationship. They didn't repair their relationship until Ramos was on his death bed.
Yeah, for all the likeability of his characters, Murray was often a nightmare to work with. Didn't he throw a producer in a lake on the set of "What about Bob?" (great movie, btw! Richard Dreyfuss as the straight-man to Murray's absurdism. Dreyfuss does infuriated frustration really well)?
- That is really too bad as I am sure #3 would have been great they were all so good together in the first two movies, and what is even sadder in my opinion, is that only 3 of them were alive when they made the "New Remake" where each of them got to do a cameo, but sadly not the 4th member of their team.
This is why I love watching your reactions Cassie. You go into each movie with no preconceived notions of what a film should be and you let your own emotions and enjoyment decide how you feel about the movie. I have always disliked the negativity surround Ghostbusters 2. The original set an incredibly high watermark, and it was going to be impossible to meet it. Ghostbusters 2 came out in 1989, a blockbuster year for films; including Batman and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and so it faced an uphill battle. A lot of the criticism stems from the perception that the cast seems bored (which I've never felt), and how the villain is almost nonexistent. As to that, Gozer shows up in the last 5 minutes of the original and is hardly a threat, yet few complain about that. These movies aren't necessarily about the story or the villian, they are about these wonderful characters and the friendship they share. The story simply exists to hang the hat of those relationships on. Anyhow, I just feel this was a wonderful movie to end the 1980s and encapsulates what New York was experiencing at the end of that decade. Both Ghostbusters films are special to me and I cherish them both.
Yup. I was reading through the comments to see if anybody else had put that in. Definitely Time Bandits. And just about every other Terry Gilliam film, for that matter.
Lol the reason the “Ghost are back” Is cause of the slime that’s producing them” which if you play the 2009 “ghostbusters video game” they expand on the lore were the slime was being pumped into the sewer system from “shandor island” the architect who was mentioned in the original movie, who was worshiping “Gozer”…“which in the game was a under water castle island” connecting the first and second film together which is a reason alot consider the game the actual “ghostbusters 3” film having all the actual actors and crew back together for the last time… aswell as being written by Harold Ramis and Dan Akyroyd again…
I agree, it was actually pretty excellent for a cartoon. My favorite episode was always the one where the subway tunnels and subway cars were haunted. It was actually suspenseful.
@BattleAngelFan "Bionic 6" was another one, which seemed to me back then to have the best animation of any cartoon on broadcast T.V. in the U.S. at the time. Some of the episodes were lame, but many were quite excellent. And, totally '80s! "Mega-bummer, man!"

2:42 - He-Man was an 80s cartoon superhero that kids watched all the time. It was an at-the-time extremely successful franchise that created a spinoff series that was also very successful for its time. The villain was a wizard named Skeletor, who is still one of my top 5 favorite skeletons.
Cassie, in regard to the movie being more kid friendly, in case it hasn't been said before, that'd be because between the first and second movies there was several years worth of an amazing cartoon show that allowed them to grow an entire audience of children who grew up with these characters and movies, like myself lol.
That painting of Prince Vigo von Homburg Deutschendorf is so damn epic. Also, he doesn't even necessarily 'look' evil. He looks very strong, noble and quite the honorable warrior! ... It sucks that he in fact, LOOKS LIKE my DAD. LOL!
it might have already been answered. but the reason for the change in tone to more kid friendly was because of the cartoon show 'the real ghostbusters' in between the 2 films the cartoon came out and was huge. and the whole ghostbusters property was more family friendly. so the tone of ghostbusters 2 (which i still love) is a lot lighter, also the look for janine is straight from the cartoon. and slimer is kinda their pet/mascot who hangs around the firehouse lol. so he's a lot more harmless in the 2nd film. any who, you're great. thank you.

Coming to this video 2 years after it came out is pretty interesting, but to give you guys some history on the Ghostbusters franchise, over the past 5 years from 1984 to 1989, the Ghostbusters got busy getting sued and just lied low doing work and research in their lab and working on new equipment, in the birthday party scene, this was a reference to the newer He-Man movie that was released during when the movie was shot. Also if anyone remembers from the first movie at the end when Raymond Stanz mentions the Tunguska blast event, he said 1909 and it actually took place in 1908, June 30th Anyways, before I searched this video I saw you react to the first and found this channel interesting, its a new channel I'm interested in watching in my spare time, I love the videos and like seeing you react to these movies great work
If you ever see this: What's funny about this movie is that at the time the ghostbusters cartoon was going strong and very popular. The cartoon's first season is, by far, the best as it expertly mixed humor and dark/interesting stories with great voice actors. Then parent groups got involved. Called it too scary. So they toned it down. I think it influenced this sequel, too, but they weren't satisfied enough as the courtroom ghost scene and all the scary flashing eye scenes were getting a lot of criticism. I guess I was a weird kid because I loved that dark stuff lol.
I love watching your growth into Ghostbusters! I’ve been watching these movies since I was a kid in the 80s and to this day I crack up every time I see them (I was 6 when I saw GB 2). A perfect mix of suspenseful and funny, and timeless! I sure hope you get to the theaters next weekend so see GB Afterlife!
Also I generated a theory when watching the movie again a while back, if you put things together, the first movie was in 1984, the second movie was in 1989, the third movie with the female Ghostbusters was in 2016, if you pay attention when Peter Venkman is talking to the woman on his TV show about the end of the world, she say 2016, which would connect to the third Ghostbusters and "Milty" was also right because that's when Lord Vigo, or Vigo the Carpathian, makes his appearance, so I'm thinking they are both correct and the third Ghostbusters movie when the ghost world crosses over, that's what the woman was talking about on Venkman's show
You’re probably ok not watching the Ghostbusters: Answer the Call 2016 movie as it’s not that great, and it doesn’t follow this story. Ghostbusters: Afterlife, however, is coming out next month and is a continuation of this story, albeit 32 years later and deals with Egon’s daughter and grandkids.
Afterlife would be a cool one for her to watch as one of the first current release movies she's ever watched. So far the most recent movie she watched was 2 years old, and then a couple that were 4 years old.
One of the big problems with the 2016 Ghostbusters is that it replays the story structure of the original pretty much beat-for-beat, but with about half again the time added and virtually no extra content besides poorly-edited improv. It makes the whole thing very trying to sit through. Red Letter Media has an excellent analysis.
Ever notice how often Bill Murray's brother Brian Doyle Murray appears in his films? The mom who walked the Ghostbusters into the birthday party also played the police psychiatrist throughout the Lethal Weapon series of movies.
Thanks to Peter McNichol, any time I see a film starring Vigo Mortenson I have to cry out, "He is VIGO! You are like the buzzing of FLIES to him!" Yes. With the accent.
That is exactly what happened. At this point, the cartoon The Real Ghostbusters had been on the air for three years, it was at the height of its popularity, and so the film’s sequel was made to be more kid friendly. The sequel to this one is coming out this November, it’s called Ghostbusters: Afterlife, it looks to be something of a tonal shift as kids find the Ghostbusters’ equipment safely stored away before an emergent threat returns. If you want more of these characters, though, I’d highly recommend checking out the first season if the cartoon show. Not the same actors, but all the characters feel right, and some of the situations feel amazingly accurate to the films. The first episode is a little meh, but it gets really good after that. The other seasons were ruined by a bunch of PR idiots screwing with it, but the first season is solid.
He-Man was a cartoon, with action figures, along with She-Ra. Now there was a live-action movie that came out in the 80s based on He-Man. "Masters of the Universe". Sci-Fi Action with some humor in it as well. Peter MacNicol (Janosz), was from the movie Dragonslayer (1981). That is where I know him from.
Great reaction as usual! You’re so cheerful and wholesome! Anyway, as far as a next one, Ghostbusters 3 stayed in development hell for a long time. It was supposed to come out in the mid-90’s. The story was that Hell got too full and the damned were mucking about New York City. A new, young Ghostbusters recruits were to join the old. Chris Farley was supposed to be one of them and he died. And another actor, I can’t remember who, was supposed to be in it, and HE died, too. And then Bill Murray said he would be in it ONLY if Venkman was dead and he was a ghost. The producers refused that. It just never happened and was shelved permanently. So the actual next one, as you said, is the “girl one.” The 2016 Ghostbusters. Which was ok. But this year, “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” is supposed to finally premiere, even though we got a trailer for it back in 2019. Go find it. It’d be great if you could eventually react to both the 2016 and 2021 movies.

"PLEASE STOP USING THE BABY AS A PROP IN THIS MOVIE!"
Well this should be interesting...
The scene on the building ledge still makes my stomach clench. I can only imagine the horror of a mother watching her baby take his first steps on that ledge. If not for the ghost, Oscar would've fallen for sure.
Her: "Who's He-Man?!"
Me: grows another wrinkle.
He-Man is Adam, Prince of Eternia, defender of the secrets of Castle Grayskull. Cringer, is his fearless friend. Fabulous secret powers were revealed to him the day he held aloft his magic sword and said "By the power of Grayskull, I have the power!" Cringer became the mighty BattleCat and he became He-man, the most powerful man in the universe. Only three others share this secret: his friends the Sorceress, Man-At-Arms and Orko. Together they defend Castle Grayskull from the evil forces of Skeletor.

Ghostbusters 2 is absolutely underrated, and doesn't deserve anyway near the levels of critique has received. Really pleased you enjoyed it.

I know Cassie has seen Alien, but has she seen Planet of the Apes? Because there's a big joke at the climax that falls totally if you've never seen the original PotA.
@@hendrikscheepers4144 Thanks, just fixed it. I'd previously Googled the spelling of the term before my initial post, and had accidentally copied & pasted the incorrect one (the entertainer instead of the actual word). BTW, I only just noticed that this same scene is not only where Elon Musk got the idea for the term "Ludicrous Mode", which is in certain Tesla models, but also where he got the idea to call the 3-motor, fastest-accelerating version of the Model S the "Plaid".
If anyone can find it 'Strange Brew" is the classic Canadian comedy with Rick Moranis. Based on SCTV characters from the 80's.
@@wolfofthewest8019Luckily, even if you haven't seen any of the PotA movies, as I hadn't back when I first watched Spaceballs a number of times during the first few years following its release, the vast vast majority of the comedic references throughout the movie you could still follow.
I'd still recommend watching Spaceballs shortly after this current scary-movie month, fresh off the heels of Cassie having seen the Star Wars original trilogy for the first time a couple weeks back.

Peter MacNicol is criminally underrated. He was great in this, he STOLE "Dracula: Dead and Loving It" with his dead-on Dwight Frye, and he's definitely in the Top 3 Doc Ocks.

This movie was worth it for Peter MacNicol alone
Dragonslayer was also really good, if a touch subversive on the story of St. George and the Dragon.
So Dan Aykroyd wrote the Ghostbuster series as a tribute to his family, who actually WERE paranormal enthusiasts. It's actually quite fascinating!
Sure, but Aykroyd himself is also an enthusiast to a looney-tunes degree.
Dan and Harold both wrote the scripts for Ghostbusters, Ghostbusters 2 and Ghostbusters: The Videogame (which was considered by many to be Ghostbusters 3 until Ghostbusters: Afterlife came out).
Cassie, two minutes in: “Please stop using the baby as a prop in this movie!”
Me: “Oh, honey.”
Sometimes watching a movie with someone else makes me appreciate it more. Watching you watch this made me like it a little better.
When you said “stop using the baby as a prop” I could only laugh, knowing what was coming up.

Big same, that GB2 soundtrack cassette didn't leave my car's tape deck for like a year.
My copy also had Beetlejuice on it. 👍
My son and i still love the movies just as we did back then

The picture scene scared me as a kid and Winston saving them made me real happy.
The little boy who says "my dad says you are full of crap and that is why you went out of business" is Jason Reitman the Son of Ivan Reitman the Director of Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters 2, These days Jason Reitman has grown up to be the Director of Ghostbusters Afterlife
I grew up watching the ghostbusters movies, my mom introduced me to them as a kid and have loved the franchise ever since! RIP Mom
Thank you for reacting to both movies Cassie.
One noticeable difference is how several of the characters smoked in the original film, whereas none of them smoked in the sequel.
there were some deleted scenes in this movie including dan Aykroyds character being possessed by Vigo and driving around but not much else was told about that
I'd say Moranis is probably like top 10 nicest people in Hollywood ever.
The fact that he quit to be with his kids when he lost his wife rather than just working more speaks volumes
How ?
Yes, and that's why Ghostbusters 3 was never made with all four guys. Murray only agreed to record his video game lines if he could do it alone.
:'(
sad thing! All four are great together! A special memory from our childhood
Ok. Hearing the line “pure concentrated evil” made me realize that Time Bandits would be a great reaction movie. If it hasn’t been done already.
Yup. I was reading through the comments to see if anybody else had put that in. Definitely Time Bandits. And just about every other Terry Gilliam film, for that matter.
"One DROP of that stuff will turn you all into hermit crabs!"
Lol the reason the “Ghost are back”
Is cause of the slime that’s producing them” which if you play the 2009 “ghostbusters video game” they expand on the lore were the slime was being pumped into the sewer system from “shandor island” the architect who was mentioned in the original movie, who was worshiping “Gozer”…“which in the game was a under water castle island” connecting the first and second film together which is a reason alot consider the game the actual “ghostbusters 3” film having all the actual actors and crew back together for the last time… aswell as being written by Harold Ramis and Dan Akyroyd again…
I loved the cartoon series "The Real Ghostbusters"!
I agree, it was actually pretty excellent for a cartoon. My favorite episode was always the one where the subway tunnels and subway cars were haunted. It was actually suspenseful.
The Real Ghostbusters, for me, was better than GB2.
Me too! That's what WB animation should do for the next Scooby-Doo crossover movie.
Extreme Ghostbusters was also pretty good.

it might have already been answered. but the reason for the change in tone to more kid friendly was because of the cartoon show 'the real ghostbusters' in between the 2 films the cartoon came out and was huge. and the whole ghostbusters property was more family friendly. so the tone of ghostbusters 2 (which i still love) is a lot lighter, also the look for janine is straight from the cartoon. and slimer is kinda their pet/mascot who hangs around the firehouse lol. so he's a lot more harmless in the 2nd film. any who, you're great. thank you.

He-Man is the main character from the long running Masters of the Universe franchise, which was hugely popular with kids in the 80s. There was a cartoon in 83, a girls spin-off in 85, a movie in 87, a spinoff in 89, a reboot in 2002, and TWO new cartoon series in 2021.

I always thought it was weird to use He-man here, the franchise was pretty much dead in 1989. I know I was 13. He-man was more of an early 80s thing. It probably should have been Nintendo or Mario Bros. Something like that.

Also if anyone remembers from the first movie at the end when Raymond Stanz mentions the Tunguska blast event, he said 1909 and it actually took place in 1908, June 30th
Anyways, before I searched this video I saw you react to the first and found this channel interesting, its a new channel I'm interested in watching in my spare time, I love the videos and like seeing you react to these movies great work
"Who's He-Man?" (My 10-year-old self died a little bit today.)
you mean it did not happen already via the trash new tv show? lol
If you ever see this:
What's funny about this movie is that at the time the ghostbusters cartoon was going strong and very popular.
Also I generated a theory when watching the movie again a while back, if you put things together, the first movie was in 1984, the second movie was in 1989, the third movie with the female Ghostbusters was in 2016, if you pay attention when Peter Venkman is talking to the woman on his TV show about the end of the world, she say 2016, which would connect to the third Ghostbusters and "Milty" was also right because that's when Lord Vigo, or Vigo the Carpathian, makes his appearance, so I'm thinking they are both correct and the third Ghostbusters movie when the ghost world crosses over, that's what the woman was talking about on Venkman's show
The 80's had so many cult movies. Best decade IMO.
yes, Willow, Conan, Excalibur, Indiana Jones, the Beastmaster ah, classic :)
Yes, you're my hero! Thank you for watching this!!!
"Pleas stop using the baby as a prop in this movie!!!" Um, well, you see, about that...
Ever notice how often Bill Murray's brother Brian Doyle Murray appears in his films? The mom who walked the Ghostbusters into the birthday party also played the police psychiatrist throughout the Lethal Weapon series of movies.
Wasn’t he in Groundhog Day too?
The actor that plays Walter Peck is also the actor that plays Thornburg the reporter in Die Hard
I had nightmares about Vigo as a child. And even still seeing his face feels a bit uncomfortable.
.
25:00 "Better late than never." :D
Thanks to Peter McNichol, any time I see a film starring Vigo Mortenson I have to cry out, "He is VIGO! You are like the buzzing of FLIES to him!"
Yes.
I love when Cassie picks a squad. She gets behind her favorite characters and goes all in. She is the best cheerleader ever❤️
These Guys are Friends. They Work together in Saturday Night Live. Thats one reason why Ghostbusters is fun to watch.
Love how Bill Murray's brother keeps popping up in his movies.
I love his voice. He has a lengthy TV resume with all kinds of great performances.
@@bradparnell614 Didn't realize he did TV. Seen a great many of his movies. Groundhog Day is my fav. Love his voice too.
I love playing "Spot the Murrays"!
The "something that speaks to the best in each and every one of us" really gets me
Great reaction as usual!
Just the fact that Slimer is now their mascot and handy ghost, makes me happy.
