  • If you're a frequent business traveler or a remote worker looking for an audio upgrade, the Microsoft Modern USB-C Speaker may be perfect for you. It's a small, travel sized speakerphone device that comes with a handy travel case and a concealed USB-C cable. The speaker quality is quite good for the size with some surprisingly punchy bass which makes conference calls feel more natural.
The speaker is Microsoft Teams certified and features a dedicated Teams button to launch the application whenever you need. You can answer/end calls with one click, adjust your device's volume, and control your mute. When the mute is off, there are two omnidirectional microphones which do a good job picking up voices around the device.
At $99 (generally discounted to around $75), this speaker is a good buy if you need improved conference call audio at home or on the go.

Hey there! Thanks for sharing this review of the Microsoft Modern USB-C Speaker. It looks like a neat little device with some impressive features, especially for work-from-home setups and on-the-go professionals. The compact design and the built-in USB-C cable are definitely convenient.
I also appreciate your honest evaluation of its audio quality. It seems like it's more geared toward enhancing conference calls rather than being a high-end speaker for music. That's good to know, and it aligns with its intended use case.
I do have a question, though. You mentioned that the audio primarily comes from the side with the Teams button. Have you tried contacting Microsoft support or checking for any firmware updates? It could potentially be a software issue, and they might have a solution for it.
Overall, it seems like a solid product, especially at the $75 price point. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experiences with it!

    If I don't have a usb-c port, can I use an usb-a to usb-c adapter?

Thanks for sharing this great video. Just a question Cameron, I have this speaker and the audio quality is excellent, however, the audio is only coming out from the side the team button is located, not where the mute / unmute button is. Is yours the same case? I google this and have not been able to find an answer.

I think your comment in the audio test that this should really be called a "Modern USB-C SpeakerPhone" rather than Speaker, is well made. I know everyone has bought into the Bluetooth wave, but I have found no "portable" Bluetooth speakers that are suitable for use as a desktop computer speaker. They all shut off after a period of time, possibly switching the sound output to another device (such as the monitor speakers, in my case), which may be problematic. To have to continually turn the speakers back on and reselect them in audio preferences, is just an annoyance that I can do without. So finding an actual high audio quality USB speaker is my principal need (90% of the time) and yeah, having microphones for Zoom calls (and no we don't use Teams! Why do all these phones have Teams links! Make it user-definable, for Pete's sake!) is a plus, though not necessary, since the webcam already has a mic in it.
All in all, it's really a void in the marketplace. So it's my bet that I'm not alone in being someone looking for a speakerphone type of device that has excellent sound quality, so that during the time we're not on a videoconference, we can be listening to music while working. As far as I know, the Poly devices are better in this department, but I have not had my hands on them.
Thanks for the review, it helps!

I think it would be interesting to compare it to cheaper generic alternatives. 90 bucks is pretty expensive, but I'm not surprised given Microsoft's logo on it.

Any in particular that you’ve tried or are aware of? I agree that would be a good comparison to do.

Could you in theory connect two of these to a laptop with USB extensions for larger conferences and have both function?

I don’t believe so. I think your computer would register them as two unique input/output devices and only let you use one at a time.

I have this. It is a really great speaker especially listening to music. The sound quality is suprisingly good. Quality of voice is also great. But i have one problem, the person who accept my call said my voice muffled and humming. Not sure how to set the ANC but that is the only problem i have with this speaker. It is also power hunger. When i use this with my ipad, my ipad's batter drain so quick

What's funny is when the Internet first started becoming a thing (around 1993) Microsoft missed it because they were working on what they thought would be the next big thing, connected telephony. I guess the whole internet thing was just a big distraction for them.
