  • All this learning-how-the-Swiss-Lathe-works has been fun, but our Knife Finishing Technicians are running out of screws, and we can't very well put together a Norseman without them. In this video, I get down to making PERFECT custom brass screws. We ONLY put titanium screws in our knives, but I decided to perfect them on our Tornos with brass as the material first so that we could ensure the program would work before cutting titanium. Here's the process! Enjoy!

    Hey John. Don't forget to try the microscope adapter I sent you for your microscope filming. We are having a blast using it in our shop. If you need anything modified, let me know.

    Something to try, Instead of using something like *O0001 (NORESMAN SCREW MAIN)* try ** You can only use 25 characters, and no spaces but its easier to read in the program directory. I don't know about tornos, but it works on my Swistek RB20 Y-2, I believe its got the same control.

    I really like what they've done with this machine. It might appear to be intimidating at first (and i'm not saying it isn't for some, to each their own), but down right to basics, it's a very intuitive machine. I've no doubt that once you guys get cozy with it, you'll be churning high-spec parts like breathing air. Here's to many Tornos happy days!

  • @Raptorman0909
    @Raptorman0909 5 лет назад

    It's easy to over-think the rotation but you have to figure that Tornos would know to reverse the motor when you change to the next tool. It would not make sense that the program would be written backwards to account for the reversing direction. But, it is useful to stumble through this -- in the end you have a better understanding of how it works.

    Which parts are you going to make on the nakamura now ? It seems all your round parts will fit in the tornos.

    You can pop the microscope lens part off the adapter to do general filming with your phone and then pop it back on to use the microscope. I hope you don't mind my reminding you. I love your new lathe!

    Maybe you know already, but ctrl-/ will comment out the currently selected lines in VSCode, using the comment style of the language in use (parentheses for Gcode). Could save you some minutes when trying out sections of your code. I use VSCode all day as a software engineer. Cheers from Sweden! 😉

    This is a cool video showing machining a Torqs screw drive. What is the smallest you've machined? We usually broach, especially in brass. Good video.

    You can grab those threads without damaging them? Is the sub-spindle a smooth jaw or serrated to grab those threads?

    How do you cut a T9 with a 20 thou endmill? The dodgy copies of ISO 10664 that I see on the internet say that Re (max) for T10 is 0.231mm (0.462mm diameter).

    I’ve been really interested in brass as a metal, but don’t you need to coat the brass to prevent it from oxidizing/tarnishing? What finish process do you use, are you spraying them after machining or just installing them as raw brass?
    Appreciate any insight,
    Thanks!

    I can't afford a knife, but if you want to make similar screws about 10-32 or so they'd make terrific cufflinks.

  • @xenonram

    Ok those high speed spindles that are daisy chained, you said they interface with gears and each is driven by the one before it. So they change rotation direction as you too down the line. Do you run left handed tools in the ones that spin counterclockwise, or do you reverse the direction depending on which spindle block you're using?

    • @agmadsag
      @agmadsag 5 лет назад +2

      Andrew Delashaw If you watched the ending you would have the answer.
      The machine always turns the spindle the ‘correct’ way by default, it knows that spindle X requires the motor to turn ‘backwards’.

    You've probably answered this before, but why are you milling the Torx and not rotary broaching it?

    • @bcrx7
      @bcrx7 5 лет назад

      I think John explained it a couple of videos ago. It's because of perfection! The rotary broaching needs a hole first which causes the bottom not to be flat and it also doesn't look at nice. That's what I remember.

    Its doglegging, need use smoothing. Check your manual for accuracy settings and the gcode to activate it. Also search nano smoothing for that control

    • @mannycalavera121
      @mannycalavera121 5 лет назад +1

      With your accuracy setting on you could rapid the machine and hold positional tolerance

  • @aserta
    @aserta 5 лет назад

    Instead of the bucket, why don't you 3D print a new assembly for that part that's screwed in that holds one of those aluminium/aluminum tubes you get with effervescent vitamins? So it's like a C section with a hole in the bottom where you slide the tube to fit on the lip from the top. If you add a smidge of cotton on the bottom, it will also protect the parts. Small, compact, easy to move about.
