RVK Newscast #88: The Geldingadal’s Volcano May Last For Years

  • Опубликовано: 29 сен 2024
  • The basalt lava from the volcano at Geldingadalir comes from a deeper place than any that has come from volcanoes in that area for over seven millenia. It arrives from around 20 kilometres deep, meaning-as one scientist said-that this is like having an express connection to the centre of the earth.
    And this volcano could be here to stay. Scientists are saying now that it could be an effusive eruption, and historically some of those have gone on for decades. This-and more-in our latest newscast.

    I'm in America. I had no idea that this week I would be watching a newsperson from Iceland and absolutely loving it. I don't know if newspeople in Iceland are all like this guy but I love his personality and the way he reports his news stories. Even his dog is adorable and entertaining. The camera man does such a great job. He always positions the camera in the most interesting angle possible and how he walks through this terrain and the wind while keeping the camera steady I'll never know but it's great to be watching something moving without getting motion sick.
    Whether this volcano keeps going or stops, I will still be taking the time to watch this everyday just because it's so interesting to see how people are that live in a county so far away from me. I am so glad that forever reason that RUclips recommended a video of this team a few days ago. I am hooked!!! Great work all of you. I hope you get rich from your RUclips channel. You and your team deserve it!!!

    Very interesting Video. It really gives a good impression of the real landscape and how it feels to walk there.
    Also good information about volcanoes from one of the most sympathetic guys I saw on RUclips.
    There is only one minor flaw that is a little confusing: The lava that is coming out of the vent now is not 7000 years old. It makes no sense to date an erupting or molten lava. What's 7000 years old is the lava from the last eruption, which may be the one that has formed that ridge.
    Greetings to Polly :)

    • @TheReykjavikGrapevine
      @TheReykjavikGrapevine  3 года назад +1

      Yes, this was unclear. I did this kind of poorly, but here is the article about it on Grapevine: grapevine.is/news/2021/03/23/lava-from-geldingadalur-is-the-most-primitive-iceland-has-seen-in-7000-years/

    • @Kruemelkraft
      @Kruemelkraft 3 года назад +1

      @@TheReykjavikGrapevine Thank you for that link. It really explains things (if you're a geologist ;) ).
      Just to explain shortly: The term "primitive" in this context refers to the chemical composition of the lava. It means that the magma has a composition close to that of the earth's mantle. In contrast, an "evolved" magma has changed its composition due to precipitation of minerals upon cooling within a magma chamber.
      Generally speaking, an evolved magma becomes more silicate-rich and more viscous. You can find evolved lavas for example in the Landmannalaugar area.

    At timestamp 9:20
    You are showing where the lava will overflow the valley.

    Why were you askedto evacuate the area at the end? Is there ongoing measurements for uplift etc in the area? What an incredible landscape. Wow! The Castration Valley is really filling up, before you could stand on the valley floor, now must stand on hills to view safely!

      In another video he said the reason for being asked to move was worry about gas, mostly carbon monoxide (CO) which is odourless and heavier than surrounding air so tends to fill in any depressions in the landscape. Humans, animals that went into a depression filled with CO would lose consciousness in a few seconds and soon die, so rescue officials want people to keep away from depressions such as the areas down next to the edge of the lave lake.

    Thanks for this report - so fascinating! Also so interesting to listen to your speaking accent - at times it sounded almost Welsh.

    May this volcano erupt for a while longer (while letting its lava flow where no one lives) so I have a chance to visit it! :D

    How far is the hike and how long did it take you and Art to walk from where you parked your vehicle? It does not look like it is an easy hike for the first-timers. The weather, terrain, and distance would seem to make it very difficult although it looks almost flat for most of the way. Thank you for this very informative report!

    I'd love to visit this volcano, I thoroughly believe I will at some point, but it's impossible at the moment.
    Watching these videos is the next best thing. In fact....it's possibly better because someone else is doing the long hike for us!
    Keep up the great work Valur & the Grapevine team!
