Honestly, the Grand Duke of Owls is a much better villain than people think. He claims to be a creature of the night, and his villain song “We Hate the Sun” give him a vampiric vibe that compels the audience.
The Grand Duke of Owls is such an old bird, he is literally seen at one point doing cross stitching while on the phone with Chanticleer's boss at Vegas.
I watched Rock-a-doodle for the first time when i was very young, and for years the only things i could remember about it was the scene were the duke turns edmond into a cat and the owl picnic song. For the longest time i thought this movie was just a weird fever dream i had. Thank you for showing me i didn't just make this amazing movie up. :)
I have a similar theory on the sun plot hole. I don't think that Chanticleer can actually _make_ the sun rise (though he and the other farm animals believe he can)... but his crowing *can* counter the Duke's ability to stop it from rising. The Duke's plan is to keep Chanticleer from crowing so that, when the Duke lets the sun rise instead of using his magic to stop it, the farm animals think he's a phony. With that done, Chanticleer is no longer around to keep the Duke from plunging the world into an eternal night.
I thought it was that the farm animals (Including Chanticleer himself) misunderstood what Chanticleer's crowing actually did: Rather than bringing the sun up, it drove away the rain clouds, which could block out the sun if they became too thick and heavy.
Don Bluth did actually explain it in later interview. Chanticleers singing is what motivates the sun to rise up. When he missed that one time, the sun rose on habit, having gotten used to raising to hear his singing. But with no more singing, no more reason to rise, and cue the plot of the film.
The Grand Duke of the owls is still one of my favorite childhood villains! Not only does he remind me of Ratigan from the Great Mouse Detective, but I think he's also like a male version of Ursula from the Little Mermaid!
I think grand duke of owls is a very underrated non-disney villain and is one of my favorites. You forgot to mention that he can't stand Chanticleer's name. Its like the Duke is jealous of him.
What's the point of being evil if? Have no real purpose to be evil. That's a real question I'm. Trying to figure out About some of these characters. What's the point of being evil if you have no purpose to be evil?
The grand Duke of owls is a wonderful villain, and he is in my perspective one of the fictional characters that inspired DC to write The court of owls in batman new 52.
You're probably thinking a little too deep on the idea that the Grand Duke of Owls and Chanticleer having the ability to raise the sun. You see, Chanticleer's friends on the farm all believed that only he can in fact raise the sun because he crows every time the sun rises in the morning but however they don't understand how the sun rotation works and when everyone realizes that the sun does in fact comes up regardless of Chanticleer crowing they call him out for being a phony. But that's only half true. Chanticleer does in fact have the ability to drive away rain clouds in which he is responsible for making days bright and sunny on the farm and I thought to myself "This is probably all about weather control between these two characters" and sure enough when I saw The Grand Duke of Owls creating rain clouds with his machine I was right all along lol, without the sun shining during the day the Grand Duke of Owls and his cohorts can do whatever they want under the rain clouds and only Chanticleer can fend off those clouds by conducting solar flares from the sun that's passing by during the day with this crowing which is really fascinating.
I will definitely admit that deleted scene of the living skunk being stuffed in that pie by the Duke himself is incredibly disturbing but if it hadn’t been for the movie let alone of course the Duke I would never have been able to discover the Duke’s voice actor Christopher Plummer who for those of you who don’t know is also the original narrator for Madeline
He certainly was a lot more powerful than one might think....considering owls don't have water-resistant feathers and thus can't fly in the rain like he and his cult could.
I never thought of that before; the Grand Duke of Owls and Professor Ratigan being compared. One thing that does stand out is that both characters are voiced by iconic actors. Grand Duke: Christopher Plummer Ratigan: Vincent Price

I've always thought this was a very thought-provoking movie. One question it always provokes in my mind is - How the HELL did they get Christopher Plummer to agree to do this?!
I will agree that the Duke of Owls is cool, but it doesn't excuse how Rock-A-Doodle was poorly paced (mostly in the narration and interrupting the songs), which is the real reason why it's hated. Also, just because it's a "children's movie", doesn't mean you insult their intelligence. I mean, maybe if Edmond wasn't forcably thrown into the story, the other characters would be fine with getting Chanticleer without him. The movie was based on Rostand's version of the Chanticleer story after all. Also, in the original story, the cat wasn't a good guy; in fact Edmond was never part of the original story; the cat in Rostand's story was a completely different character altogether and is actually a villain, along with the nighttime birds (probably where Grand Duke came from in terms of concept). Not to mention, Goldie Pheasant, who was Chanticleer's love interest in the movie, was actually a selfish bird who never understands Chant's purpose in the original story. I'd love to see the story centered around how she was involved with Grand Duke's plan to stop Chant, but would eventually resent ever helping the Grand Duke in the first place, and starts to learn exactly WHY Chant should crow to welcome the Sun.
I remember enjoying Rock a Doodle as a kid, and espeically the Duke- but I wonder what the deeper message, if any, they were going with for his portrayal. Looking at the original play, its a celebration of simplicity and authenticity, along with artistic expression, as opposed to the cynical and materialistic, reflecting the authors feelings as an artist who moved to the country side and his feelings for the increasingly cynical and materialistic french aristocracy. The movie plays with this via the glitz and glamour of the city being what is traping Chanticleer even as he doesn't really enjoy it, except when he is singing, or when he falls for Goldie- but the duke kind of comes out of nowhere as this Maleficent like villian to drive the plot. He is great, but I wonder what he was supposed to represent if anything. Big Buisness crusshing small farms? The more abstract selfish evil that victimizes the little guy (he is behind both the bad weather, and the corruption in the city keeping chanticleer from returning)? Its a big change compared to the Blackbird- one of the good guys in this film, being arguably the main villian via his cynicism inspiring others to look down on Chanticleer's values and his directly coluding with the predatory night birds and orchestrating what was supposed to be a hit on Chanticleer. Great villian, okay movie, but I wonder about if the writers had deeper themes in mind or if they dropped them in favor of facilitating the musical theming of Country being wholesome and down to earth, Rock being enegetic but coopted by buisness, and Operatic as being for snobs that litterally prey on the little guys.
In my fanon Don Bluth film, The Guardians of Ga’Hoole: A cross between the Grand Duke of Owls and Scar is none other than MetalBeak aka Kludd, Soren’s older brother who becomes the evil king of the Pure Ones. Soren joins the Guardians of Ga’Hoole and kills his evil brother, hereby saving the owl kingdoms from the Pure Ones’ reign.

One thing I noticed about this lesser known Don Bluth villain, is that he is a kid friendly version of Dracula.
That’s exactly what I thought about the Duke, his villain song expresses his “Creature of the Night” demeanor.
