I never watched this series until I heard Sal sing it’s praises. Thanks to him I gave it a shot and so happy I did, it stays the truest while giving us new stuff at the same time. So glad to finally get the full breakdown from my two favorite RUclipsrs
I asked Greg Weisman if the show could ever continue as a comic, but with Sony owning the rights to the show itself and Disney owning the animation TV rights, it’s not possible. They would have to collaborate to do it.
This show is the best and one of the most accurate to Spider-Man's character depiction outside the comics along with the Spider-Verse movies. Josh Keaton is my absolute favourite Peter Parker along with Yuri Lowenthal. (Spoilers for those who haven't seen the show) One of the only aspects of the show I didn't care for was Kraven's mutation.They basically tried to combine Puma with Kraven. One thing also I didn't really care for in this show is Walter Hardy being responsible for uncle Ben's death. It seems a bit out of character for a master thief to try to steal from a fight promoter in broad daylight with witnesses around and no mask on and then jacking a car and leaving a gunshot victim. I know it was so that they could create drama between Spider-Man and Black Cat but I didn't really vibe with it.
To clarify some of the things talked about at the start: this was on from 2008-2009, running concurrently with Wolverine & the X-Men and the Hulk vs double feature came out during the shows run as it is (kinda) supposed to tie in with WATXM. EMH came out after both shows had ended. The toys had been canceled during season 2 and the Marvel/Disney acquisition happens shortly after/near the end of season 2. Sony sold the TV rights so they could get concessions on the movies. Wiseman has said he doesn't consider this to be cannon with EMH and the Spider-Man we see in EMH doesn't match this Peter (EMH has him doing work on the Bugles site and sometimes is a photographer). The show didn't get released on BluRay until TASM 2 cause Sony was Sony. Peter and Gwen's biology teacher is Miles Warren's brother, who is introduced in season 2
There are 2 things that date this series. 1) Gwen gets a glow up by letting down her hair and taking off her glasses. 2) The girl with the "nice personality" is assumed to be ugly when in reality shes actually hot. Other than that, I couldn't guess when this was made. I love this show so much! ❤💙 🕷️ 🕸️
The second might date the show, but I think even these days young boys kind of have the same opinions. It’s still a good reveal for MJ though, directly taken from the early comics. Plays much more into the soap opera aspect of Spider-Man. To be fair also in defence of the glow up with Gwen, Peter was at least into her long before she did that and Harry didn’t even seem to care.
Wolverine & The X-Men was also right around the same time as Spectacular Spider-Man, Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and all three were canon to Hulk Vs.

I think this may be my favourite version of Jonah Jameson. The voice and the character work is great, he has a few more softer moments than JK Simmons so maybe that’s why this version edges him out for me.
I loved that Peter moment with Liz. There is a HUGE middle ground between being an insufferable incel and being a total pushover when it comes to nerds. I kinda wish more media understood that.
I don’t think Sally was ret conned. I think she was in the Lee Ditko era. She was just a nasty popular girl in the background. Her personality was most likely ret conned. Sally is such a deep cut, I only know because I read those early books a lot when I was a kid.
Sally Avril was both retconned and in the Lee/Ditko era; she just didn’t have a personality or a name other than “Sally” until Busiek’s Untold Tales run.
You guys are right about everything you say about this outstanding show, but I gotta disagree with you on the look of the character designs. Comic artist Sean "Cheeks" Galloway was the lead designer on this show, and I adore his style! See that distinctive mole on Peter's cheek? That's Sean's mole from his own face! Sean snuck it onto his final Peter design, after everything had already been approved and nobody caught it or stopped it from going ahead!
ESPECIALLY MTV Spidey. Peter’s characterization in that show is so unique compared to other adaptions, but I freaking love his more assertive personality

44:50 kinda felt targeted at me because this was my first spider-man show, so it was a lot of my first exposures to the spider-man tropes 🥲
