Amanaz was a Zamrock band founded in 1973 in Kitwe, Zambia. The group released their only album, the acclaimed Africa, in 1975. Amanaz drew influences from American and British rock of the late 1960s-early 1970s, especially the music of Jimi Hendrix, and from traditional Zambian music, identifiable in Watson Lungu's drumming and Keith Kabwe's vocals. The band's name is the acronym of "Ask Me About Nice Artistes in Zambia". In 1973, the band recorded in the Malachite Film Studios of Chingola their sole album named Africa. It was first released as a LP in 1975, and since then re-issued by the German label Shadocks Music in 2008 and by the American label Now-Again Records in 2015. Of the 12 songs of the album, three are performed in the Bemba language and the rest in English. The album continues to be influential as an embodiment of a strain of Zamrock. Pitchfork journalist Nate Patrin described it as "both behind and ahead of its era" and therefore uniquely "out of time". Music critic Mark Deming noted that Amanaz's music was based on "deep, bluesy grooves with a strong psychedelic undercurrent and thick layers of fuzz guitar". Amanaz split up in 1976. Keith Kabwe, the former band leader and main vocalist, then created the short-lived band Drive Unit the same year. By 2014, Keith Kabwe served as a Pentecostal pastor in Mbala and was working on the release of gospel songs. In 2016, Amanaz's song "Khala My Friend" was featured in Season 1 Episode 2 of The TBS show “People of Earth”. In 2021, Amanaz's song "Khala My Friend" was featured in the closing credits of Season 2, Episode 3 ("Do the Right-est Thing") of the Apple TV+ series Ted Lasso. In an interview with Davies Chanda of Times of Zambia in 2014 Keith Kabwe said Fame caused the demise of the group; “We caused mayhem in various night spots in Lusaka and the Copperbelt, but our instant fame made us crumble.” Amanaz made such a huge impact which also became destructive to itself, with every one feeling that, he was a star and that, without him, the band would be nowhere. These, according to Kabwe, were the differences that brought the band down and he (Kabwe). Khala my friend has over 20 Million streams on Spotify and Amanaz currently has over 400,000 Monthly listeners. #MusicAppreciation
The Guitar Soloing maybe. I can see some Funkadelic in there aswell, but I'm ngl I think most of the Hendrix Comparisons are just because said musicians are Black. The comparisons to a band like The VU or TheDeviants with maybe some of the soloing being proto-nwobhm,since they were heavily colonized by england and in some ways seems to predict a band like Motorhead or Saxon a couple years later and maybe some similar interest in darkness or mysticism.
I heard this on Henry Rollins’ radio show and it started my exploration into 70s African rock music. Great song, and the whole movement is so cool- many of these bands had no idea what the hell they were doing and just went for it anyway.
I can't believe I almost missed this gem. It was the closing song from a sitcom...completely forgot the story and focused on the music. 16 secs of music grabbed me gently, sorrowfully by the throat and would not let go... Thank You Amanaz and those that posted it. pass it on.
I remember hearing this back on the John Peel show in the 80s; I'd totally forgotten about it until a tiny phrase was played on a documentary about Zamrock, and now I can luxuriate in this wonderful track again.
Dit klinkt als een fantastische band! Gehoord in Zina, een Nederlandse tv-serie die mij op meer dan 1 onderwerp kennelijk wat leert... Dat is dus altijd goed!
Wouldn't surprise me if the producers of People of Earth stretched this original version up and tweaked the hell out of it to make it better for the show somehow. Or have you heard a different version than this
Anyone who’s touched by this song - please listen to “Bobcaygeon” by The Tragically Hip. If you’re Canadian, you know it already but it has a similar bassline and comes from the same heart beat as this songs. Mournful, somber and reflective while simple people would call it “chill”. For me it’s just medicine, 25 years after its release.
You're a disgrace for comparing these two songs. This is timeless. That nonsense you are shilling is weak. Weak. Weak. You do not understand beauty. Leave it to people who do.
I'm not certain, but I believe "Khala = Time" so to speak, kinda puts a whole nother meaning to it knowing his friend Khala is Time. Hello Khala my friend Where do you think your going to? ....... ...... Khala my friend, come back to me Khala my friend Cuz I'm gonna miss you.

never expected to hear this classic on ted lasso but here we are
Exactly where I came from 😂
@@speedbumper9669 same lol, as if I couldn't love that show any more

Sounds more like The Velvet Underground to my ears. Also maybe Jefferson Airplane on this one.

a local record store had music in the backround that caught my ear . The owner said it was something called Zamrock. What a wonderful discovery!!
that's so cool
This is literally the first song I've ever heard from this band and it is amazing. I feel like I just fell in love.
This reminds so much of the Velvet Underground but it has it's own world. Respect. What a haunting, beautiful song. It reminds me of a sad summer.
I can confirm this is perfect for a sad summer
@@parkerross7461 - Roger that...
this summer my grandpa died and I found this song a few days later

The artist truly put his soul on this one. What a classic.

MrHellhath17 I faking it the same way! Had to hit up my Shazam app, so so good!
My shazam couldn't open fast enough when this song came on. Thank you Ted Lasso for this absolute gem
This song goes on every time I come down from taking mushrooms... A great way to return to reality
dude weed lmao
Yes, It's nice and warm and fuzzy, I agree, says the mushroom man.
Thank you People of Earth. Fascinating. When I first heard this song, I knew that I had to hear it again and again.
one of sweetest songs ever
This is a groove. What a bassline. Oh my god, this is life and love ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
That bass is amazing. I am a bass-girl lol, and this pushes all the right buttons.
this is at like 90% speed and it sounds incredible like this
couldn't agree more
The insanee bass guitar in the background that is played under a thick blanket.....MY GODDD!! I NEED IT
right? its super prominent and *bassy* for something from 1975
This is scratching me right where I itch.
nicely put
perfect word to describe this
Perfect.

Can't believe this is the only album amanaz made!!!
Finally some good music
Zambian music on a British /American series never thought I'd e it. #Representjng 🇿🇲🇿🇲🇿🇲
Not enough people know about the glory of Zamrock.
Still listening in 2039?

my dog loves this song, it always helps put him at ease during storms
I discovered this, by chance, from watching "The Comedy". otherwise, i wouldn't have known of it's existence. what a great Song.
Spotify playlists made me find out about this song a couple weeks ago this year. I came to RUclips to find a video.
What a song man 😢🔥
I love Zamrock. Greetings from the Netherlands.
This is fantastic. It jingle jangles all my heart chords
Ted lasso show has the best music for real
Nothing quite like chill zamrock. Would give my life savings to amanaz if they recorded even just one more song like this and Sunday Morning
This song has 12,000,000 on Spotify but only 200,000 here??
Few songs like this with such weight. Love it.
and this is what ohhyuk like !!
I think it's more about the lyrics than the music itself that appeals to him :D I came here after watching Dazed Christmas video too =))))
Ty Ted Lasso for bringing me here.
What a masterpiece!
I think this version is slightly slowed down. The voice is deeper and the tempo is slower.
Wouldn't surprise me if the producers of People of Earth stretched this original version up and tweaked the hell out of it to make it better for the show somehow. Or have you heard a different version than this
the spotify version is much faster
They do it so this video wouldn't get copyright claimed, and they could keep making money off of someone else's work.
I think it's much better this way
This is the real version i believe. ruclips.net/video/2QxeDecgNWg/видео.html
feels so nostalgic....
thank you very very much for sharing this gem! Your spreading joy in doing so

This version is slowed down and modified because of copy rights issues. Probably.
This is pretty much the same speed as on the vinyl, which I play a lot at home.
