  • In this video I am Taking a look at the new Configurator tool from Audio Solutions the high end HiFi speaker manufacturer that allows you to fully customise the look of the speakers you would buy from them, from the colour the trims and much more., We have never seen anything like this in HiFi before and its pretty revolutionary and freeing when you think about it.

I feel that they have taken a leaf out of car manufacturers book here. However, I'm really intrigued as to how they sound , especially their top model in this range. I really really want to sit in front of them for an hour. My favourite was the yellow or the frost blue with chrome trim and colour matched tops. Yes I agree it's far better than sending your speakers down for a respray. Another great post Terry, please keep them coming.

Designing a customizable speaker line (concept, not the actual engineering) and website with a color/finish/trim customization interface quite similar to this was my capstone project in design school a few years ago. It's really cool to see a company do it in real life!

Hi Terry nice video - something out of the ordinary! I appreciated how you could recognise your preferences changed after seeing a new combination - we are subjective animals and a previous preference is not something we should expect to be absolute over all time, as we learn from new combinations. Well done for capturing this process on camera. Your two lads are priceless as so must be your partner, judging by the lads. Of the three designs I would prefer yours. Unfortunately as a non-UK resident, I don't qualify for the Elite Audio competition. All the best, Rob in Switzerland

Thanks Rob, the competition is a UK distributor organised thing not the manufacturer so it makes sense they want it to be for their market, it’s a shame for everyone else but that is why I negotiated with them to get the winning design speaker here so at least we can all see it through to completion if that makes sense, best I could do in the situation.

Yes for the configurator tool, or similar to a car one too. That is not the best part - the best part I will get to in. the next video but its the building of custom speakers which is much harder for the manufacturer, nearly impossible to scale which is why you don't see it. It requires the manufacturer to do everything in house so its more cool than people have given it credit for as they havent thought of that whole side to it. I did

@@PursuitPerfectSystem That's one way to find a good excuse for every aspect in life. You really overdo it a little bit in general. With the quality content you provide I don't believe that you need to use these cheap tricks. Like your recent video from the Marten factory was amazing but you had to put the clickbait title in there whether they are the best speakers in the world instead of just calling it a unique insight into highend speaker manufacturing or something along the lines. The type of content you provide is an extreme niche catering to audiophiles (and there again only certain stereotypes who vibe with what you are doing). People who either don't like your content or see it by accident in the youtube suggestion won't spend 15min+ on a video like that. Below 30sec continuous watch time the youtube algorithm doesn't even count it towards a view and those who stay longer but cut it off before etc heavily influence your youtube algorithm ranking anyways (they reward people who stick). Anyways, apparently you feel like it's important to grow your channel while I believe it all has to do with consistent quality output in niche content. People over time stumble across all kinds of channels within their respective domain of interest and tend to keep watching the content only of those who provide what they are looking for. Apart from (at least from my point of view) overdone clickbait titles and thumbnails the quality of your video content has been improving steadily, so kudos to you.

Marten are manufacturing speakers costing in the hundreds of thousand of whatever currency - they will be seen by some people as the best in the world which is justified when you see whats going into them - yes the titles are sometimes edgy but its never bullshit - there are many that use bullshit titles, I dont do that

No different front and back and tops and trims overall 18000 combinations and this is only the beginning for what they are looking to offer but it has to start somewhere. You have to think beyond this, you have a demo you love the sound of the speaker. You then go away and sit and customise the speaker finish to look exactly how you want it for you. Once you start trying different combinations out you realise someone is normally doing this for you and you have to chose from what they have done. Doing it all yourself feels very different.

Yes, the speakers are very customizable but only within the range of paint colors, huge as it is. Axiom doesn't have such an advanced tool, but you can choose from six different wood veneers and six different stains for each veneer. Or just go with black or white. They don't offer trim but you can choose from black or white drivers. I don't know what is on the surface of the cabinets of these speakers before paint is applied but it is always the same whatever it is. So while this is interesting, I don't think it's completely groundbreaking. I will have to check out what these speakers are supposed to sound like!

Seriously? Suggestion that there is only super expensive Wilson Audio with customisation and then only this particular brand is simply off-putting… I understand what is advertisement and why you decide to cooperate with some brands in some cases, but really? You have to produce such videos?
There are plenty of producers that offer some customisation (especially when it comes to painting in RAL pallette).

I used the Wilson example because it was the only example where I had been there in the flesh with a speaker quite as outlandish in colour as that. It was just as example of custom colour being a thing.
Painting a speaker a colour you want is nothing new, being able to use a software to design the look of the speaker you want with many different customisations not just one colour, with the price updating in real time is something new. So you could sit at home with the wife and design the speakers you want in your home by looking at lots of different options and combinations like you would with a kitchen or car or something like that. Sure, you have here some online preview of what it “will”/might look like, but it’s exactly the same as with car configurators (nice to look at online, but exactly like in 99.9% of cases where on screen visualisation isn’t accurate at all and it can only be some fun factor, not a revolution). Definitely not a revolution…

Yea that is a possibility and that is also why it’s great for me to get a set in the flesh so we can all do that comparison and people can go and see them at dealers and home demo them as well.
Also the tool itself could be better at showing us more information and images but it has to start somewhere. With cars you look at a selection of photos to see how the car looks in different lighting conditions in the real world. I can see people doing the same with these speakers finishes too over time. It’s a cool thing to have don’t knock it it’s moving hifi forward in the right direction

lol, I can buy an entire car for that. A brand new car. And a nice one. The amount of "douche" tax on audio gear is rediculous. I mean what's the margin on these 98.5%??

The car comparison is always an interesting one because a basic car in the UK would cost more than these do let alone a luxury car it would 2x or 3x as much minimum and all the money is made on cars after sales like servicing. I think your under valuing how much things cost to make and then sell all over the world, these are reasonably priced. You could have a completely custom finished speaker for a couple of grand. No one else in the whole world is offering that.

Aside from the cost of materials skyrocketing over the last couple of years (Biden-omics) it's still ludicrous.

Perhaps choosing a speaker finish will be like choosing the color of a new car. What about resale value? Best not to stand out too much. Meanwhile, your wife's preference -- no speakers at all -- delivers a crushing verdict. Regardless of color, these speakers are, well, maybe not an eyesore, but not gorgeous either.

I question the mindset of buying high end speakers with the intention of reselling them, thats more entry level not once you get to the high end? You can always choose a flavour of black white and grey etc to keep it simple but it could still have some flair which is why I mentioned that in the video. I have some white speakers here now that I really like but visually they don't have any real flair or character.

Speakers should be thought as musical instruments. You wouldn’t want your $5000 vilion painted or wrapped in cheap vinyl. Adding paint, vinyl or real wood veneer detracts from sound IF your speakers were made of real audio grade wood. If they were made of MDF, then paint and veneer won’t detract. Point being, that speakers need to be made of wood such as spruce, old pine, or walnut wood. MDF robs the musicality from your speaker. Build your speakers with real wood and minimal linseed oil or bees wax as the finish. No paint and no veneer. Like I said you wouldn’t want your violin or cello covered with cheap or expensive veneer of any type. Think of your speaker cabinet as a musical instrument.

I was talking to carpenters about this last week and real wood has many problems for manufacturing consistency speakers need and would require so much work to create a speaker the cost would be too extreme for most people. That is why we don’t see more of them. Plus a speaker is not meant to have a tone of its own like a violin which is why it’s made of a specific wood etc something else to think about here so it’s not clear cut for making speakers out of real woods

    • @Mike-jm5wt
      @Mike-jm5wt Месяц назад

😂 speakers are transducers, they convert electrical signals into sound waves. They are not instruments so your theory requiring old world craftsmanship and exotic wood species is typical audiofool nonsense. What you need in a speaker cabinet is a dense inert structure, let the speaker make the sound not the enclosure.

Looks are a consideration for Tekton owners - the colour they choose is about the looks but Tekton is a tiny% of the speaker market so that is not a good basis for making a bold claim. A very high % of people buying speakers or HiFi in general are massively influenced by how the look, so its a very important thing to talk about and think about and if we want HiFi to grow it needs to take this into account more and more and the industry knows this

I will take the criticism on board - but it seems a bit harsh. I have just made a video about speakers pushing technology boundaries, this is a video about speakers pushing the visual boundaries which is just as important. I could not talk about the speakers yet as the competition needs to run first, if you saw that in my video entered and won you would be thanking me as ££££ worth of prize is a great prize. But more importantly If you can design a speaker to fit the room visually and that means you have can a larger and better speaker without upsetting the mrs or whatever then that is a very cool thing. I was hesitant at first but once I played with it I got it.
