The Best Rear Projection Screen for Shows - Optiblack

  • Опубликовано: 28 фев 2019
  • Gerriets' Optiblack is probably the best rear projection screen for stage.
    We took it for a test drive at the Las Palmas Opera www.operalaspal...
    It's a very dark back projection screen made of PVC that doesn't suffer the hotspot issues other screen suffer.
    If your stage design has a dark background, the Optiblack 2.2 is for you. Check it out here: www.gerriets.c...
    Even if this is not a sponsored video or paid advert I have to admit that this is a very biased review. I like Gerriets products - everybody knows that.

    Please forgive a stupid question but is this Projection Mapping? I am totally new to this and looking to create for example: Street Scenes when singing songs from the likes of Les Mis or a Snowy scene if performing something from DISNEY'S Let It Go but looking to use the Existing large and full width Cinema Screen but add two Side Panels to create a Pseudo 3d image of a street scene and others. As we are only a tiny music school, we cannot afford Projection mapping but I was thinking of employing three Projectors and as above a main image and two side images. Am I barking Mad or do you think this is achievable? So Main screen plus two X Opti black on the sides. Superb info on Angle of the lighting as evidence in the final scenes on your video Thank you in advance - Aindre

      @philipp7pc  5 лет назад +1

      Aindre Reece-Sheerin Thanks for watching!
      Well, in this case it’s not really mapping. I’m just projecting a kind of 3 dimensional image on a plain 3x4 surface. But it works pretty well. Despite the fact that covering the sides will make side lighting impossible (something You should consider for Your planned setup)
      What You are describing seems pretty doable.
      Give it a try and keep us updated.

    Thanks a bunch for sharing and for a great, informative video which made us choose Gerriets' Optiblack 2.2 for some small-scale experiments with a roll of 2.2m width and 2.5m height.
    We are very satisfied with the results, and are thus aiming at getting a larger screen measuring approx. 3m height x 6.60m width.
    As the rolls only come in 2.2m width, I guess we need to order a pre-made screen that is made up of 3 pieces of each 2.2m (roll width) x 3m (height) - and those pieces will be then need to be welded so there will be a seam.
    Since we are sometimes shooting video using the rear-projection option, we are very curious to know if this seam / welding is visible or not in camera (its essential that it is not visible ;-).
    So the questions are:
    Do you have any experiences with screens with seams?
    How to avoid visible seams? (Or is it possible to buy this large screens without weldings?)
    Do you perhaps know of any links with video examples? (its hard to see in this video - so maybe the seams (if any) ARE invisible ;-)

    • @philipp7pc
      @philipp7pc  2 года назад

      That's a good question. The sizes You are asking about imply that Your camera might be very close to the screen. In this case (and in unavoidable 4K) the seems might be visible. But You could ask Your local Gerriets supplier to ask for a very precise welding.
      Most times they are pretty precise and You won't see any welds from a few meters away. But as it#s a theatre company and most screens are really far away from the audience it could be that they work fast - in which case you still wouldn't see any welds from the audience. But from closer You might.
      The biggest problem here is: The camera picks up differences in brightness very easily. So the slightest changes might be visible. But that's also a kind of negotiation. So talk to Your local Gerriets store directly and ask them if they can try to achieve some invisible welds.

    Hi Philipp, thanks for the super informative video. I wondered if you might be able to 'shed some light' (lol) on the visual effect of the Optiblack when no video is being projected. I am doing a show soon where there are some scenes for which we do not have video material. Does the screen just disappear into the darkness at the back when not projected onto? Or is it shiny? Can one place lights behind it and create a similar effect like to when one lights a white Opera from behind with different colors? I am not interested in using colour at all, it would rather just be a sort of warm ombre effect I would want to achieve with a light source behind the screen, just sort of an atmosphere for the space, and wondered what the possibilities are to create something like that with an Optiblack as opposed to a white Opera screen. I really dislike that conference feel when a white screen hangs there with nothing projected onto it. On the other hand I'm wondering whether the Opti is limiting in terms of 'existing' onstage in moments where it is not used as a projection surface and need to make a decision on this. Thanks!

    • @philipp7pc
      @philipp7pc  2 года назад +1

      Thanks for watching!
      The optiblack is a little glossy. But unless You're hitting it with frontal lights it shouldn't be visible when dark. I would still suggest to have some content on it that helps pretend that there was a tangible nothingness there in the back. ;]
      With lights from the back like you would do it on a normal opera the optiblack looks pretty stunning as well.

    1.) Does OptiBlack come in a 6 Ft height X 6 Ft. wide. Or can I buy a roll of of it to fit the stages I would be on? Same dimensions apply
    2.) What kind of projector should I be in the market for?

      The Optiblack can be confectioned to your needs. So get in contact with your local seller and ask them for a quote.
      About the projector it's hard to tell. It would mainly depend on the distance and the light conditions (see the video on projectors for more). But if you're setting up and striking as a one man band, think about getting a laser projector for a more robust build.

    • @philipp7pc
      @philipp7pc  4 года назад +1

      As long as it’s a mirror lens you might be right. But as conventional wide lenses distribute their edge light in a very flat angle you will be losing a lot of intensity to reflection on the glossy back of the screen. So there might be more of a Hotspot or at least reduced intensity on the edges.

    Thanks for the in depth demo. God bless you bro and know that Jesus Christ, God in the flesh, has given His life for your sake. Because of His great and deep love for you personally, God Himself became a man to pay for humanity's debt by dying in our place on the cross, and that man is Jesus Christ. God's love cannot and will not go against His own righteousness, so as Judge and Owner of His creation, our debt of sin had to be paid for, but only He could pay it because only He is righteous. And He didnt have to pay for our debt of sin but He chose to for our benefit. Yet we rejoice because our God is alive and well because He ressurected from the cross and conquered death so we could have eternal life, so just as Himself, those who believe will die but we will live again forever more in peace and joy in heaven. For the eternal God has paid for our eternal debt in hell by dying on the cross so we could have eternal life with Him in Heaven (John 17:3). Repent ( turn ) from your sins and turn to Jesus and He will surely forgive you. Follow Jesus for He is a GREAT Savior and Comforter in good and bad times (read the book of John in the Bible to know Him, it is Jesus' life History, He is the Word of God in the flesh, He is God Himself in the flesh). And we do not use His unconditional grace and forgiveness as an excuse to sin, even though we are not perfect, but I desire to devote every ounce of my being to following Jesus, the One who loves me and forgives me. When I sin I am deeply grieved, I lament and repent, turning back to Him, and He righteously forgives me because He has paid for my sin. We do not serve Him to earn His love, we serve Him because He loved us first (1 John 4:18-19). When He came the first time as a man He came as a lamb to be slain in our place, but Jesus is coming back as conquering King, the Lion of Judah 🙏
    1 John 1:8-9 KJV - If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
    Romans 6:23 KJV - For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

      I think ppl watch this channel bc he is a friendly face and like having his face explain things/ and also seeing the behind the scenes moments of his work, maybe read a text book if you would prefer
