Some mech pilot with hot shit bleeding edge tech and weaponry:” you are not even gonna know what hit you!” Me in a charger on a rooftop:” brave talk for someone in elbow drop range…”
Great video, very informative and interesting! You nicely summed up the obstacles and opportunities created by street fighting in giant stompy robots. Difficult, but fun!! This of course leads into the inevitable war story from a grizzled veteran. My merc unit had a mission to seize an objective which happened to be located in the center of a Capelan city. The defending Liao forces, a mixed bag of armor infantry and mechs put up a stubborn defense, with their mechs equipped with FTs deliberately setting buildings on fire to hinder and channel the mercs' advance. (It's the Cappies' own city, they can burn it if they want to!) As the player nominated to run the opposition too (it was a Mechwarrior 1.0 campaign) I had a griffin leap to the top of a L3 building in order to act as a high-level sharpshooter. He quickly became a dangerous pest, and I took pride in coming up with an effective tactic. The player running the fire lance got fed up with it eventually and moved his Crusader within good LRM range. He told me he was shooting at the building. I thought he meant the Griffing and began to run down the various modifiers to his attack rolls. "No, no" he said, "I want to shoot the LRMs at the BUILDING underneath the Griffin!" I hadn't thought of that. Needless to say, the static target of the high-rise building ate all 30 LRMs and was effectively destroyed as a structure. Still, the Griffin pilot could escape doom by making his Piloting check. I rolled a 4. The merc players cheered like South American fans at the World Cup as the Griffin unbalanced, spun on its long axis, and plummeted downward through the building, demolishing the remaining floors before crashing through the ground floor into the basement. (Because a falling 55-ton weight will be only stopped by the ground.) The mercs had a surge, and the next couple of turns were very busy! One of my friends then remarked that the now-prone Griffin hadn't taken a turn for a while. I had honestly forgotten about him and stopped for a minute to consider the situation. Mentally considering the fall damage, it was probable that the Griffin was disabled at the very least. So, I said "The pilot is staring up at the sky overhead and wondering when he'll be able to move again."
Actually most of the Dragoon upper officers involved, including General Brubaker, were dismissed, though the General chose to kill himself and I suspect many of the other surviving colonels/majors that were dismissed chose a similar action. Colonel Nicholas Crews of Gamma was executed, both for leading the Dragoons to Terra and for killing his fellow Dragoons on Parma, probably alongside Captain Deborah Sheridan and the rest of her "Black Wolves", those that survived at least. The only high ranking officer that got to stay with the Dragoons was Major Andrew Krull, who briefly took command of the Dragoons on Terra. How high he will rise with that black mark on his record is unknown. Great summary, got to experience that high speed fall last weekend when I was playing at a convention while using a Mercury II.
I had the chance to see some of the hextech sets at my usual hobby shop recently. They look good, but I just can't imagine their university buildings representing an institution of higher learning. (I live in the greater Boston area, we have so many universities and colleges that it's not possible to not have an expectation of what such institutions should look like.) It's not a criticism of their quality, but I wouldn't mind some structures in an architectural style other than 80's brutalism and Blade Runneresque megablocks. the roads and terrain though are something I would probably keep an eye out for.
There is a (non-educational) industrial research campus near where I live in Shah Alam, the SIRIM campus. They have some buildings that look similar to the Hextech University, for what it's worth. Not as fancy though...

Remember: There is no god, no honor or chivalry on the urban battlefield. It is a place of such hell that one must make their home in the insane places, for it is the only way to keep oneself sane.
Nice to hear about the bad wolves getting a black eye from what I've been picking up about the recent lore. Also, finally looked up the Hetzer, and yikes! Though I'm surprised there's no Gauss rifle variant yet.
Urban warfare really is the worst kind of fighting soldiers have to do. Your hearing sucks from having to shoot in confined spaces so you can't always hear them coming, and sometimes the first we would know that the enemy was there was when we both came into a room from opposites sides. I can't imagine how much worse it would be with mechs stomping around. Although, setting up a bunch of IEDs to take out their lower legs would probably be a viable tactic.
Often besieging a city is wiser than entering it to indulge in urban combat. In WW2, the Germans blockaded Leningrad and starved the population. Another city as I recall they used their tanks to bombard and destroy the city, as they did in the Warsaw Revolt(respect to the Poles). Julius Caesar besieged a city of Gaul, built a palisade around the city to starve them out and then built a palisade behind them to protect from reinforcements. He was Victorious in his conquest of Gaul.

I think Urban combat in the future is going to be much worse than Battletech, if Ukraine is a precursor to the future of combined arms and wide scale war, we'll get to enjoy widespread deployment of effective, small, and easily replaceable robotic loitering munitions, advanced cluster munitions that can stay undetected for decades, modifiable, artillery deployable mines, weaponized terraforming, and human wave tactics somehow still being a viable strategy in some units. I'll take giant stompy robots as a compromise over nukes instead of whatever the future of reality has in store.

I hope more creators do videos like this.
We have clan assault mechs! Yeah? Well we have a Long Tom battery and a lance of Ravens.
I love urban warfare, i built an entire unit around it. It is do much more interesting than just figting in woods
Same. It's definitely my favorite type of map to play on in the game.
I also see 3D printing as a great way to make lots of buildings for a tabletop.
Excellent video! As a history buff myself it was neat to tie in actual urban battles with the ones in battletech!
Glad you enjoyed it!
In the "Night Watch" by Terry Pratchet, Vimes makes the observation that the best place for urban combat is a wide open field.
The Hextech stuff is actually exactly the sort of thing I've been looking for. I'm probably going to give their stuff a look.
I'm glad to see this video arrive despite the troubles you mentioned holding you back.
Great video! Another gem in your ever-expanding library!!
The Urbanmech, king of city fighting!
It is a city fighter sometimes kind of anyway. lol
@@BigRed40TECH at least it's trying 😁
Until a short range setup Stalker walks through the building behind you.
Another excellent longer-form video! I am definitely a fan of this format.
This isn't long XD
great video, especially like the mini review for the Hextech buildings from Gale Force 9 and Thunderhead studios.
Thanks!
Excellent video Red. Great job!
Great video Red. For those of us new to the Total Warfare rules it is extremely helpful to know what to expect & the value in the rules. I'm really stoked to read Redemption Rights as well thank you@
That was very interesting Red, I really enjoyed the in depth covering of the topic, in particular having an overview of the tabletop rules.
As someone who builds terrain for my other wargames, I just want to say, I would totally buy those Hextech STLs if I found people to play Battletech with. Those buildings are super pretty!
Love your content. You have a voice built for Battletech
Every video Red makes is 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Thank you! :D
Urban warfare: where a MadCat is terrified of an SRM carrier.
Really enjoyed this video. Loved how you not only talked about the Wolf's Dragoons bringing the pain but addressing urban combat in Classic. I also agree with you that 3d maps are the best. I know I've made my fair share of tactical errors with paper by misreading or not reading the levels correctly.
From the intro quote: "...think of them as a line on your résumé." Wow, that's harsh! But then, life is cheap, BattleMechs aren't. Nice video! Thanks! :)
Thanks for a great video Big Red! My campaign is getting close to its final battles which will take place in the capital city of Ingress 4 so this video is especially relevant.
I love your approach to the sponsorship product that you are sent. Both the donation and the tie in to battletech lore.
If i send you a $100 bill will you do a video on C-bills?
No :P
This video reminded me of the old MegaMek urban warfare post.
Great video! Thanks Red!
My pleasure!!
Some mech pilot with hot shit bleeding edge tech and weaponry:” you are not even gonna know what hit you!”
Me in a charger on a rooftop:” brave talk for someone in elbow drop range…”
Charger with elbow drop off the corner building beats paired PPCs any day.
My First Sergeant when I was in basic said the best way to fight in a city is, don't.
Awesome video Red! Thank you for including what novel some of the info came from. I'm putting Redemtion Rites on the list of books to read now.
Dam they got STL files wooo need to go check out as hey terrain is fun to 3d print
I have enjoyed this video and i would like to see more in the future.
The ultimate demonstration of human nature. Cities took possibly years to build. Mechwarriors can level in just moments.
"No, no" he said, "I want to shoot the LRMs at the BUILDING underneath the Griffin!"
I hadn't thought of that.
I shortened it down for the video. I really enjoyed Redemption Rites.
Listening to the rules descriptions on road hexes and structure/construction points reminded me a lot of those same rules for OGRE
Never played Ogre
had half expected a honorary mention of the Urbanmech for some reason.
I don't honour things that are unworthy of it ;)
Ah, Urban Combat.
I almost regret never investing in Streak missiles.
But that's their problem I guess.
There are other buildings not made yet, that can be downloaded for 3D printing from Thunderhead. Check them out. Should be in the pinned comment. :)
There is a (non-educational) industrial research campus near where I live in Shah Alam, the SIRIM campus. They have some buildings that look similar to the Hextech University, for what it's worth. Not as fancy though...
Nice work as always. I'm gonna have to get around to reading Redemption Rites some time soon. Am yet to read an IlClan novel.
You should!
There. Followed the Books2Read link on your Redemption Rites video (thanks for that). Bought it. And now it's downloaded to my black and white little Kobo.
Oh yes basements *watches mech slide into a hosue then FALL into the basement.*
this is where mechs and other units with jump jets become one of the most dangrous as units konw in battltech. also units with jumpjets in a urban warfar sitiation will domante the urban warfare map battles. this is where also mechwarrors are the most likely to die from enemy battlearmor and very heavly armed inftrey in combined arms warfare.
it dosn't matter how advanced your weapons are, if a city refuses to give up and die then at best you can starve it out
I wonder if theres rules to drop buildings on mechs with demo charges....
I like the sound: "Urban" warfare ...
i heard comments help videos perform like srm infantry in a bunker
They do!
Thank you nice work
i trained with a hybrid urban combat/coastal hook infantry battalion during my tour in the military. i'd prefer a steaming jungle in an IRL war over that anytime.
Another great video.
Good.
Very good.
Erotically good
Thank you sir for your efforts, surprise you didn’t use HBC footage as they have urban maps
Didn't have anything ready to go. It wasn't necessary either. I think it worked wiht the assets I had :)
@@BigRed40TECH ok was just wondering. Thanks for the redemption rights shout out, reading throught it now
Ive been wanting to run urban warfare for a while but in AS im not sure how it benefits infantry rules as written.
There are optional rules in the latter half of AS Commander's Edition that do help infantry a bit more. But it does make things more complex than many people are comfortable with when playing AS.
Cities can be Quite terrifying . Especially to assault Mechs.... Without jump jets. To stay with the fighting, they are pushed to Move At maximum Speed or have the battle, leave them behind.. It's not slipping, And falling, that's so much a danger. It's not being able to actively probe. Concealed units That are hidden underground... Picture A 4 story deep. Mech Trap. Place right in the middle of a main road. Construction Level is hardened Same value as the surrounding buildings on each side is road. But having a covered Live making the road itself lesser construction value.
Of 80 to 90. .. Or possibly just 40. Really depends on your target. Such as an Atlas , King Crab or a
Dire Wolf. . Allowing smaller You did the pass over it. But When your target steps on. That hex It's sets off explosives Which damage so legs. And calls for a Pilot skill roll .. If successful Roll 1d6 For which adjacent ax, bex you are blasted into . And additional, roll see if you remain standing. . The Adjacent hexes All s S**** back towards the hole like an Ant lion trap. As the debris acts like Ball bearings So If falling not about these slides into the hole. ... A rule to determine. facing If you're going over feet first, head first back first. And drop 4 levels.
Falling dimage times four. But wait, there's mor,e . .... On the first underground level. 5 of 6 adjacent hexes contained a platoon of infernal SRM 2 armed infantry. The other hex has regular effort to drink and chip arm was a 40 point AREOTECH BOMB they deploywith a chute that does not miss....... if surviving that.... the infantry rains down napalmon that 100 ton monster. The walls are sheer and harded or 150 CV ...so escape will be of determined effort.... reducing CV below mech tonnage cause ti to collapse...possible to bury you4eelf...all the while undermining the buildings on ether side of the trap.... if you reduce the foundation oa huge structure...it 2ill collapse from its own weight.. toward the direction or the damage ..the mech trap.... possibl7 dropped building into the trap v your in.....pretty much same as aettinhĥ nukes off on each side of a canyon as your Battalion or Galaxy Marches at the bottom......
No bloodnames, just chaff.
@@BigRed40TECH It's a pretty symbolic victory and a not insubstantially sized force that got mauled.
Do these hex things come for other terrain. Not big for city's but hey hills and trees o ya
Hills are available soon :)
Imagine locomoting across the ground like a peasant and needing to look at people to kill them.
This post brought to you by catapult gang.
Is the building giving fire: Y/N?
Is the building small enough to simply stomp: Y/N?
If N, apply firepower.
I am going to be taking as many free charge attacks, Draconis Drifting into enemies, as possible.
Ah, the Rules Addenda so complicated...it got it's own Box Set in earlier editions. X_x XD
I owned City Fight the box set as a kid lol
@@BigRed40TECH Wish I had it lovely paper/cardboard buildings.
07:42. Pyrrhus just could not get a break, could he?
Nope lol
Often besieging a city is wiser than entering it to indulge in urban combat. In WW2, the Germans blockaded Leningrad and starved the population. Another city as I recall they used their tanks to bombard and destroy the city, as they did in the Warsaw Revolt(respect to the Poles). Julius Caesar besieged a city of Gaul, built a palisade around the city to starve them out and then built a palisade behind them to protect from reinforcements. He was Victorious in his conquest of Gaul.
Feeding the algorithm.
Make love, not war. Unless you love to make war. 🤔
Wait.....the Wolfs took a L!? BLAKE BE PRAISED!!!
Kind of. No one with a Blood Name took an L.
@@BigRed40TECH Damn it.
I've had a koshi skid into a basement and lose its leg down there. Was a lesson 4 sure. What's that about protomechs blocking streets 🤔
Recently found your channel and gotta say I’m a fan already!
I have to ask though (only if you feel comfortable) is the name “big-red” a reference to a great state in the Midwest?
Not at all! I used to play War-Thunder and ran the Soviet Tech-Tree and live-streamed it on RUclips as "The Big Red Bear", it didn't do well but the name hung around when I was on Valrak's server and acting as one of his mods. It became the part of the name that stuck, but I did adjust it so people would stop coming into comment sections ranting that I was secretly a communist -.-
@@BigRed40TECH ah understood! I do wish people would stop getting so worked up about politics in our escapist hobbies.
But, recently it’s hard to blame them, with all the culture war people on both sides deciding 40k/battle Tech are desirable IPs to control

I'll take giant stompy robots as a compromise over nukes instead of whatever the future of reality has in store.
urban warfare, such barbarism
