  • In this video I explain why fins on rockets, but also surf boards, arrows and airplanes are located on the back of the object, and not in front.

      1. It also has flaps at the bottom that are bigger.
      2. The flaps are really only used to belly flop into the atmo home.
      3. Flaps at the top do make it more unstable, it just doesn't matter too much. The lower stage has 33 engines that can steer.
      4. Flight 1 spinning didn't have anything to do with aerodynamics and everything to the separation failure. I've never even seen a rocket flip like that and not explode.
      5. The grid fins don't do much until the end of the return trip where the direction is reversed. They also steer.

    the fins being on the front vs on the back is what's called unstable vs stable equilibrium. technically, if the rocket stayed perfectly vertical the whole time, it could fly with the fins on the front, as it can with the fins in the back. the difference is that, when the fins are in the front, any slight disturbance grows uncontrollably, while, if the fins are in the back, any slight disturbance corrects itself
    it's the same as balancing a pendulum at the top vs at the bottom

  • @lockheedx33
    @lockheedx33 7 месяцев назад

    It’s not just about the placement of the fins themselves, but how they move the center of pressure around depending on the placement. The closer to the center of mass it is, the easier it is to turn the rocket, but putting it in front of the center of mass forces it to turn. Rockets don’t need to turn very quickly, so their center of pressure is far behind the center of mass.
