This is such a great tutorial! Tom’s descriptions of his process as he paints is so helpful! And his voice is so sweet and easy to listen to😊Thank you!
incredible teaching and incredible teacher! very gradual, slow as should be, precise and reassuring. I have quite a bit of practice in watercolor and have not yet reached this stage when you paint with absolute confidence. Insisting on the importance of tonal value all along, so important! Thank you for showing us the way
As usual Tom, you are an inspiring teacher of creative process! I especially love your answer to Dena’s question about people who worry about developing their own “style”. You (and I paraphrase) advocate just following the basic process of keeping colour and tools simple, maintaining the values, and being aware of what the medium is doing. Then paint, and paint and paint some more! You will eventually figure out what you like the best about what you are creating, and do it again and again. That is developing your “style”. It takes time and repetition and exploration!
I just found you and I’m so tickled I love your teaching events . Where here can I look for beginners teaching? I find you soothing to listen to. Do you have a book?
Love the focus of value and shape! It works so beautifully. The result is lovely as it creates depth and helps to accentuate the light against the darker areas and shadows.
Thank you for sharing your time and expertise. You really touched on some of my weaknesses. I am really drawn to your style. Love the connectivity of the subjects and the emphasis on light.
This is awesome. Such a straightforward simple process. Excellent instruction. I plan to do a paint along to learn from this. Like Tom, I get easily confused and benefit from the less is more approach. Thank you both for this. I look forward to watching the landscape video.
I think you’re perfect. Don’t change a thing. You teach so well. I adore listening and learning. I’m new so I need help. Do you give classes? How do I start? Do I float around and find short recordings to try painting with? I feel as if I’m drowning without a solid platform of knowledge to base my beginning with. I hope you can take the time to give me a direction. I’m in love with learning, this is so helpful. Do I start with your number one tutorial?
I'm so, so glad you enjoyed this! Tom is a generous, brilliant, fun instructor! Check out his RUclips channel or his website for more info! tomshepherdart.com/
Thanks for sharing your process. I followed along and had a wonderful experience and a satisfactory outcome-what more can you ask? What I appreciate most is the ability to draw out form and light so effectively while preserving the spontaneity of the medium. Will be reviewing your website for in-depth lessons. Cheers!
Oh my gosh, thank you! I feel like I could do this. I’ve tried to paint oranges time after time. They turned out awful! I’ll be getting these colors and give it a try
I really enjoyed watching this tutorial and learned very essential skills… thank you so much!! Could you please tell me where I can find the reference photo? That would be great since I really want to try painting it. 🤗
Brilliant tutorial I absolutely love Watercolor it’s my favorite medium love the boldness of colors didn’t understand the name of your brush. If you could send that to me, I would appreciate it. Thank you again. Cheers.
The Panart brushes aren't really available here 🇺🇸 Jerry's Artarama has a set of very small brushes and a set of 3 small brushes, and that's about it. Is there anyone here you know of who will carry the brushes you have shown?
No one tied you down and forced you to watch this 😂 If someone takes the time to share their skills and knowledge with you, a little appreciation is in order!
I think you have a lot to offer and have a lot of knowledge about watercolor. May I suggest that you need to think about what you're going to say before you start recording. This video could be half the length with a bit more planning on your part.
I think you may be used to scripted, highly edited video lessons, which are fantastic. But this is a live demo, with an artist painting on the spot, explaining, teaching, having discussions, answering questions! Nothing was planned in advance, this is a go-with-the-flow type of lesson 😊
Now there is absolutely no reason to fking the paint brush like that. He's extremely slow and careful where he's painting what's to be seen. The slap dash on the edges and background is just ridiculous.
Absolutely gorgeous!! Your process is amazing

These look like peaches to me. Love the loose easy style. I’d like to know the colours he is mixing as I’m a beginner.

I'm so glad you enjoyed it! They are Panart synthetic squirrel brushes, in size 18, 12, and 8.
I would love to buy the Panart mop brush series 1181 brush but it is not available in the USA!
What a shame!
Try JacksonsArt in the UK. They post anywhere around the world.
The Panart brushes aren't really available here 🇺🇸

Ah that's too bad. Hope you can find something good!
What type of squirrel hair brushes is Tom Shepherd using? Synthetic or real hair brushes?
Dana could you close your window so we can have the fullest possible screen of the demonstration?
When Tom is teaching, it's full screen on him. Enjoy!
I wish you would just get on with it.. a little brevity and empathy for your viewer's ears please?
i.e., You talk way too much dude!
