Pica Dry Pencil Review

- This is a quick review of the Pica-Dry Longlife Automatic Pencil ( amzn.to/3IoksFp ). It was a fun, somewhat random find for me, but it's popular woodworking pencil and an alternative to a carpenter's pencil for people who are getting stuff done.

That's really cool! Now I wish I knew a carpenter so I could buy them one of these for Christmas.
This, absolutely, is my favorite pencil. I use it for drawing guiding lines on my carvings.
I have their markers they are great for getting into tight spaces to make clean lines . Great for drill hole placement in templates.
I never knew I needed this to replace my old school carpenters pencils. Then all the cool kids on RUclips is sporting these so I had to order one too. Good review thanks.

I think Pica pencils are designed to fit into small holes and mark the wood underneath. Like a scribe or awl.

Thanks for the review. I definitely did not expect to see something like this on your channel. I was recently looking to buy this or a pencil like it and it was hard to find many reviews on it. There are actually a few competing pencils in this same category. In addition to the Pica Dry I know of at least the Hultafors Dry Marker, Dixon Reach, and the Sola TLM2. They all have the narrow area near the tip to be able to mark into a deep hole. If you're interested in them a comparison between some or all of them would be really cool to see for the combination writing utensil nerd/woodworking hobbyists like me.
I ended up buying the Pica one because from the few reviews I could actually find on them it seemed to be the most durable/reliable of them all. The Sola one is interesting though, I'll probably get one of those as well eventually, because instead of having a sheath like the others it has a more normal triangular grip that unscrews to reveal the thin neck for reaching into holes. It seems like it would be more comfortable for normal use while still offering the versatility when marking stuff.
Ich habe den Sola TLM 2 und es ist ein toller Stift mit robuster Mechanik. Er liegt gut in der Hand auch wenn man nur normal was schreiben will oder anzeichnen. Für Lochmakierungen vorne abschrauben.
Sind sie mit der Mechanik von Pica Dry zufrieden ? Manche sagen es geht schnell kaputt. Vielleicht muss ich es kaufen und selbst ausprobieren.
A little correction. The lead is not a standard 2.0 mm. It is 2.8mm and I can not find spares other than the originals. Also, I checked with 2.0 mm lead unfortunately it is not working at all.
Ive had mine since I believe they first came out in canada. Want to say it was around 2016 or earlier. The pencil has been on my pocket since then every day. The shape isnt great for writing but it is great for scribing marking
Pica is the genus of seven species of bird with long tails and predominantly black on white markings (think magpies). I would guess that's why they chose to use a bird as it both fits the name and represents dark markings on a white surface like a pencil on paper. I don't see anywhere on the company website confirming this, though.

Heya, i have this, just an older model. A suberb for all kinds of outdoor work.
However, its not 2mm, its 2.8mm.
After a few months the pen easily falls out of the sleeve.

These are great for transferring the location of holes in pieces of wood. That's why it has the long steel tube. They also have markers and crayons with a similar design. Also shorter ones designed to clip to a visor.

Great video and review I’m an electrician so I work with wood a lot on job sites and was recommended one of these by my co worker and it is one of the most useful wood working and contractor pencil they use. Also fun fact Adam Savage form Mythbusters actually did a review on this pencil on Tested a while back which got me interested in the brand as a whole

Another non-clutch "clicky-type" 2mm pencil I can recommend is the silver series by Staedtler. Full metal construction too, even the internals.

It is NOT 2mm lead. Standard 2mm lead will NOT work in this device. The Pica lead is slightly larger than 2mm.
1. Curious and interesting. I don't think I'v seen a non-clutch 2mm mechanical pencil before.
2. Now I want to see a "wet" pencil.
The wet is a marker!
You can get really cheap 2mm propelling pencil (just like a 0.5mm mech. pencil) off eBay now branded 'Baile', they're not bad either come with a 2B lead but I prefer clutch when it comes to 2mm.
@@blaser80 How is clutch better in your opinion?
@@ichirofakename I use softer lead and like my 2mm to have a sharp point, with clutch I can easily conceal the point when I'm finished. With a propelling mechanism it grips the lead, so I have to push on the point to conceal the lead which blunts my sharp point. Plus I like the simplicity of the clutch mechanism, it's reliable and never gets clogged.
@@blaser80 Whatever works, right? I'm exactly the opposite: I use 2.1mm when I WANT it dull. .5mm is sharp enough for me when I want sharp, and I don't have to sharpen it. I hate sharpening. Happily there are tools to suit both of us.
I saw knock-offs of this sold in Lidl (Trader Joe's in USA), not as solidly built but usable. My father really like these for wood and metalworking.

I'd buy it just for the weirdness factor but it seems well designed for its purpose not that I'm a carpenter or woodworker
Bought one of these cost £20 lasted a month mechanism that pushes the lead through stop working. Better cheaper alternatives out there. Nice but it totally overated and worth more like £5
I use it but the price is ridiculous.
Nothing about the look of this pencil pulls me in. There's just too many nice ones on the market.
