Any Reason you reload your First Cannon by giving it to the Cannon then reloading?
Is it so that a direct Cannon Hit AoE doesn't interrupt your Reloading?
There are lots of reasons to reload a cannon by hand. It can allow you to multitask another activity while reloading cannon, it can help you dodge sniper shots, and like you mentioned it can help avoid AOE damage by standing further back.
To answer your question though, I load my first cannon like that to help me get in the mindset for it the rest of the fight. I'm new to gally (usually I sloop/brig helm) so I'm not experienced at cannons and am still building muscle memory for keybinds.
