Great stuff bro. This is really a big help. I just recently got back into playing my trombone after almost 30 years. The army really never allowed me time to play. But after retiring I decided to get back into it. It amazes me how after so many years of not playing how it's coming back to me quicker than I thought. I ordered your book Get Ahead and can't wait to dive into it. Keep posting the good stuff bro. It is really appreciated. God bless.
Hi Richard! So glad to hear that you're getting back into playing! And especially glad to hear this is useful! Please stay in touch, and enjoy the book!
thanks for watching Isaiah - I play on a Marcinkiewicz 6E-S - (more info on it here: nickfinzer.store/products/nick-finzers-jazz-trombone-mouthpiece-marcinkiewicz-6e-s?_pos=1&_sid=0213dd99f&_ss=r)
iM WAITING FOR MY VAVLE TROMBONE IN THE MAIL .WHEN IT GETS HERE I WILL FOLLOW YOU IF THATS OK /IM SELF TOUGHT ON TENOR SAXOPHONE ALTO AN BARITONE SAX FOR 18 MONTHS ON EVERY DAY ROUTINE. GOOD STUFF.😊👍🙏
From my experience, the tongue should never touch the lips.... the tongue should articulate from behind the teeth (I've always been told where the gums and teeth meet...
When I tongue notes it sounds like I’m trying to get mucus out the front of my throat and I don’t know why. I’m placing my tongue in the area people mostly refer to (where the teeth meets the gums) but I don’t know what is causing this noise. Do you have any advice?
It sounds like you might actually be using your throat to do the tongueing instead of your tongue. It could be "in the right place" but "doing the wrong thing"
@@NickFinzer is there anything I can do to fix it? I’ve been trying to practice tonguing exercises at a far slower tempo and took everything back to the basics but I still end up hearing the noise and I’m not sure how to stop using my throat if it is the issue.
You have to work with a teacher who can help you isolate the problem and work to correct it. Sounds like a muscle memory problem, you'll need to retrain your throat to remain relaxes while playing and engage only your tongue for articulation...
Nick Finzer thank you I feel a lot better about my articulation! This is will definitely take some practice to get used to but things are already much more consistent.
Totally! Glad to hear that. Yea when the tongue goes between the teeth it just causes a whole slew of problems - so, I'm glad you're taking the time now, to fix!
I'm working on this today. We have a rainy spring day and jazz practice indoors is the thing to do.
great! its a good start :)

Great video. Many thanks.
You’re very welcome! Glad it was helpful 👍
Amazing! I love it. Good practice
👍👍
Good stuff my brother. What kinda mouthpiece are you playing on?

Great exercise! Is there any benefit to trying this with just the mouthpiece, like while I’m watching tv? 😊
I don’t find articulation exercise to be useful just on the mouthpiece, personally…

Hey Nick very helpful, I have a cuestion, when I go to the low register the tongue tends to touch the upper lip, should I avoid it?

No problem
great

Where does your tongue hit when you articulate? Mine hits under my front teeth and a little on my upper lip. This feels incorrect though.
Yes, that will not yield the clearest attack for sure. I’d recommend trying to aim for the tongue to hit close to where the gums meet the the teeth.

I can’t hold that passage because I run out of air 😂😂😂😂
one little bit bigger breath at a time! ;)
Nick Finzer lol I think my trombones too big
@@williamkao5381 All bout efficiency! bore size isn't super relevant... :)
Nick Finzer ok thanks so don’t use as much air? Play the passage faster?
More efficient meaning to focus the airstream work that it lasts for the whole exercise
Far too complex for me!
Maybe further down the road. Definitely not intended for someone who’s in the first year of their trombone journey 😃
