Super. I was at my house in Suisse Normande for that storm. Snowed for about 28 hours straight, as hard as I ever saw, around -4C, 30mph wind, and 5 foot drifts on the top road. Amazing.
I have always lived in Normandy, and when I was a kid snow was a common thing during winter but nowadays it's REALLY rare. The last time I saw snow was 7 years ago and it's didn't even last one day. Last week I had no problem walking in the street with only a shirt and a jean, in mid-october
Seems like they needed the weight of a couple of extra cars to keep the momentum going but otherwise very cool. It always looks like the plows work much faster than snow blowers on trains so it makes me wonder why the rail companies still bother with the blowers.
I remember well this situation. This is most likely on the Roue - Le Havre segment. As it rarely snows hard in Normandy (5 centimeters at the most and not every year) they all tracks don't have a snow plow : I was told by a SNCF (the railroad company here) engineer there is only one to be shared between both networks of Southern and Northern Normandy (South and North of the Seine river). In exceptional situations such as 2013 this can result in a couple of days delays. Passengers are not happy ! I was not ;))
Yes. In areas often subject to snow, there is always at least one snow plow on site, on alert. But in other regions, the snowplow sometimes has to come from quite a distance to intervene.
Some people are very strange. Some admire Hitler, others Stalin or Putin. Putin is a bloody dictator. Stable country? All the protesters against his tyranny were arrested a few weeks ago. All the opposition leaders ends in jail or with a bullet in their head.
Often times when rail plows stall in the snow, they are extremely hard to pull out. You can't just back them up with the power you went in with. Additional power needs to be brought in, and sometimes excavating equipment.
The locomotive is a 84 tons diesel-electric Alstom-Siemens "BB 75000", motorized with a MTU V16 / 65 litres / 2700 hp diesel engine and four asynchronous electric engines.
Why dont you invest in a motorized blower train. Worlds largest snowblowers. They exist. And they are incredible to watch those enormous fans toss that snow 200 feet in both directions.
They are hired to go around and plow the snow so that passenger trains don't have to go through it... I don't even want to know what goes through your head on a regular basis

Je suis ravi!
so rad!
I know why vikings loved Normandy: It's because of winter snowfalls, good milk, good cider and cute girls!
LOL yes.
in normandy, winters must have been much harsher in the 9th century. but surely much sweeter than in Scandinavian countries!

The engine specification looks pretty tiny. But should be enough for snow plowing.
The locomotive is a 84 tons diesel-electric Alstom-Siemens "BB 75000", motorized with a MTU V16 / 65 litres / 2700 hp diesel engine and four asynchronous electric engines.
Crazy!

They do have them, but not in Normandy, this much snow is very rare in this part of France.
Don't leave the flanger down at the xings
