This is like the very first digital short, 20 years ahead of its time.
It's a VHS short.
The first guy on the video date is Julia's husband today.
That would be Brad Hall.
@@SailorCallie Yep, one of my Facebook friends.
I'm not sure when they got together as a couple, but they both attended Northwestern and were in a comedy troupe together pre-SNL.
@@pronkb000 They met at Northwestern. Her first gig was at the Practical Theatre in Chicago co-founded by Brad.
@@JasonBaker1978 No, they had their own company called the Practical Theater Company that was associated with Second City and had their performances next door.
she was hoping for someone "sponge-worthy"
😅
This song has lived in my head rent free for far too long! I decided to look it up just to verify that it wasn't a fever dream. Now that I've seen it again I don't know how to feel... 😶🤯😄
Just feel lucky that it is on here and we see the person watching the video. On the SNL Film Festival in 1985, they only showed his video.
We went back to his place, and, Yada, Yada, Yada, we ended up watching Star Trek for a few hours.
Gary Kroeger, a man criminally forgotten. If it had been him instead of Charles Rocket leading the line in 1980 he would’ve been a legit third tent pole along with Joe and Eddie in the Ebersol era.
He was f'n great...
....of course, I say this as a spot bleeder ...
@@mysterfrosty I believe Dwight McNamara did an educational film about that once.
Omg! I remember seeing this as a kid. Of course the drilling and spitting references went right over my head. Lol
Lol I was 9 or 10 I remember 🤣 this too lolz definitely over my head also
What do they reference?
@@AnthonyGrantPressRelease Dentist terms.
This is one of my favorite sketches EVER because it’s just so gloriously bonkers. The fact that Brad Hall, the first guy Julia Louis-Dreyfus rejects, is her current husband (and I believe they were together at this time too), “I just wanna take some pitchers,” Robin Duke’s delivery of “you ARE picky,” and then literally everything about Gary Kroeger’s performance… this is gold. Seriously, this is one of the best sketches of this era, at least in my opinion.
Pictures *
@@joshmacmullin6103 I wrote it like that because he doesn’t pronounce it like “pictures,” he says it like “pitchers” lol
Gary Kroger was a very underated cast member. knew him briefly when he was a temporary neighbor in toluca lake. he ran for a congressional seat in iowa, unfortunately didnt win.
I remember when this originally aired and thought it was hilarious.
I remember seeing this when I was maybe twelve. The first line of the song stayed with me for the next 35 years until I decided to look for it on RUclips. Thank goodness I found it!
Same!
Same!
That is so crazy……. I was around that age as well and the first verse is what always stayed in my head too! I remember me and my friend thinking this along with Eddie Murphy’s doing his James Brown his “hot tub” routine was the funniest thing!!
Same
This aired like 2 years ago dude
Gary Kroeger was so underrated
Don't know what's weirder: that this is considerably different than I'd remembered it from 40 years ago, or just now realizing that Julia-Louise Dreyfus used to be in the SNL cast.
Maybe you only saw the video part that aired on the SNL Film Festival in 1985.
I just found out today that she was on SNL.
FYI Michael Mccarthy wrote this sketch. He use to teach at the Improv Olympic West in Los Angeles. He wrote for SNL for 1 year.
When I saw this as a teen, I was laughing my ass off.
During the first two, am I the only one who was thinking "Lowered Expectations..."?
this is so 80's......
Thanks so much for uploading this. HILARIOUS!
best tinder profile ever!
If she really wants to date a dentist, she should check out Tim Whatley.
He converted to Judaism just for the jokes.
"Lowered Expectations..."
Andy Samberg avant la lettre, -- this is the "Blizzardman" of the 80s.
Little shop of Horror Steve Martin Dentist
No Profiles, No Pics better than Online Dating and Dating Apps; at least you can actually see and hear the person.
A young Julia Louis Dreyfus got to love her… By far my favorite comedian/actor… 🤓
Omg I never saw this before - too funny.
I was a Dental Hygienist for 42 years, I'm still laughing at this!
I have this from the SNL Film Festival from 1985 and it only shows the video of Ira Needleman, not the stuff surrounding it.
wow she never ages.
How is this not a well known classic?
Because it's from the Ebersol years, which Lorne for a long time kept off the air.
True (and OLD) SNL fans KNOW...that it is...
He must love all the Star Trek shows and films that came out after this.
Is his character recurring maybe? I'd love to see more XD
No.
Was there a gas leak at his surgery?
it's great seeing this again.
2:59 Chris Kattan's SNL debut 😄
Classic Gary
She married Wesley Clark!!
ahahhh dental x rays oh thts good
3:06 Kroeger just confirmed on the SNL Nerds podcast; that's Bebe Neuwirth!
BRILLIANT!! I love it! What a GREAT piece of SNL Trivia!!!
So she was one of the dancers?
It's like an actual Donnie Iris video.
I thought she was going to say next lol
That just went on and on
Reminds me of the SNL dancers 😁
That shirt with the golden molar is epic
Not at all what I expected but a very surprising treasure sketch comedy.
So this is how it was Tinder back in the 80's
I think that's Cyndi Lauper as the Star Trek girl. Sure looks like her.
the only way that would have been Cyndi would be if she had been the musical guest for that episode.
So this is the Dr. Spacemen origin story
Reminds me of Dr. Dude!
He had his own toothpaste brand, notice?
Back when the show was funny. Love the Star Trek convention line. Saw this when it first aired and it slayed me.
20 years before lonely island and please don't destroy. Wow!
Well, I'd have him be my dentist.
She looked so young😊
Umm...becuase she...was? #time
This was before people were just judged by 'swipe left' in 2 seconds, not to mention people putting in the time to create real profiles that took more than 2 minutes to create. Technology makes judgment 10 times more efficient...
Yes, back in the day we all had ten minute long videos with dancers and music for dating profiles. I remember it well.
I'd love to know how their date went.
Couple things
Kroeger was great of course
JLD AND Robin Duke are legends
The EBERSOL ERA ruled. Yes there were ups and downs, but the ups were the best in that shows history.
Ebersol's SNL is the antecedent to modern SNL. Lorne changed the show to be more like Dick's incarnation with more brilliant pre-taped bits from Lonely Island and Please Don't Destroy.
The 1st 5 years had some Albert Brooks stuff & taped commercials, of course, but it was the Ebersol years where that dominated, and that's what you have today.
Lorne's stuff was edgy for its time but always ended up dated and parodied. All character stuff.
Well....they're not SNL legends....but Dreyfus for "comedy"..yeah. Duke was more of an also-ran... She only got SNL because Catherine O'Hara freaked out up on arriving at 30 Rock and quit... Woudl have been fun to see what she would have done...
@@billtooke6642 Oops...except this wasn't during any of Lorne's years. And it's not like Lorne really WROTE a lot during that time.. Guided...shaped...certainly. But wrote??
@bradyguy7701 yeah I know this isn't Lorne's era.
He certainly facilitated Michael O'Donahue and Franken and Davis
Wow. I've literally never met any SNL fan who thought the Ebersol era was good. Good for you! Eddie and Joe had some VERY high points...Kazurinski and Kroeger had some nice moments, but they never quite seemed to know what to do with Ebersole (No relation) or Mary Gross. But the majority of those years is considered a flop! Especially 1980...arguably the worst season ever of SNL.
Lonely Island and Please Don't Destroy are cutesy stuff that plays well on the internet for Gen Xers... but "brilliant"? Not by a long shot...your opinions may vary... PDD in general is repetitive and overcooked - Look at us! We get more and more wacky!
Needleman just shxt on every suggestive rap video ever.
How many bar mitzvah's did his cousin Larry have?
Do you think J L-D is also one of the dancers here?
Umm....No. J-Lo would have been about 14...
She doesn't look like a 'Kim' - she looks more like err..
What song was this based on?
ZenSatori2009 its just like the Steve Martin number from Little Shop of Horrors
It reminds me of something between a lot of things in the early 80s, but particularly maybe Devo?
@@peterhenryellisboyce2602 This was before that.
She's better older
A real lost opportunity IMHO… would i not have been great if they brought this character back to date Elaine in Sienfeld?
Jerry - “you’re dating a dentist named ‘NEEDLEMAN??”
Is that Bebe Neuwirth?
Yeah
Julia Louis-Dreyfus
(*reposting my recent comment)
3:06 Kroeger just confirmed on the SNL Nerds podcast; that's Bebe Neuwirth!
Watch Robbie Benson movies ...
Notice it did the "three" bit there? First two are just ordinary, then the third guy is special.
you are probably referring to the 'comedy rule of threes', here. Yes, they nailed it here.
@@wylierichardson-tu6zsThey seem to do this a lot on this show and a lot of times it sucks.
@@sha11235 the most mediocre comedy I've seen doesn't follow any 'rule' at all, tho.
This reminds me of a senior in college that was always trying very hard to be the 'life of the party'. This was, as we say today, 'cringe'-inducing.
So so sooo so so so bad. 1984 was truly the worst year.
Amazing being a dude turning down Julia Lewis Dreyfus...
But maybe he wouldn't have turned down Julia LOUIS Dreyfus...
I found out just now that she was on SNL... Still, not feeling all that much loss...
Was this whole video dating real or was it for the skit only.
It's for the skit.
video sating was real. At the time print ads in newspapers were the norm. Most of the videos were like the first two.
True story: I think she actually MARRIED the first guy in real life!!!! (Brad Hall)
Yes, they were a couple for a long time.
Julia was cute
Why is the spreading of sticky stuff on people always seen as something sexual?
Well, it is!
Watching in 2023, it's hard to believe that such things as "video dating" ever existed. But they did, and I assume they were just as lame IRL as the first two videos in this sketch. I was never involved in such a thing, but if I was, I wouldn't admit it!
it's a case of keeping up with technology. They have had plenty of print-based personal ads in newspapers and magazines, over the years. I would think that the advantage of video dating is being able to see and hear the prospective dates, whereas print ads dont give you that.
@@wylierichardson-tu6zs I agree that video dating would be superior to the old personal ads in the print media. But my point was, given the current state of technology, video dating seems pretty quaint. Personally, I never indulged in either personal ads or video services. I met women the old fashioned way ... in person and often via mutual acquaintances. I met my wife on a bus stop. She was on her way to work at Arbys and I was hungry. That was 41 years ago.
Has JLD ever said anything funny? She's a character actress at best.
She was NOT particularly good on SNL...but she would also describe her time as being very difficult.... She played a lot of secretaries and wives...but had no really good recurring (or otherwise) characters. She was not much of an impressionist...so that didn't help. Her Marie Osmond was funny...because the sketch was. Consuela on The Ghostbusters Show had her moments ("I like the black one...."), and her Nina Blackwood wasn't too bad...
@Tony-dc8dt And FOUR seasons of a
MODERATELY SUCCESSFUL show (...Old Christine...) Truthfully...nobody who ever watched her on SNL thought that. She as cute...and she was very young...but she just never had "it". She was certainly not used correctly, but some still find a way to shine in small parts...she never really did. She's lucky they kept her around as long as they did.
She's arguably one of the most successful alums of the show...the most- Emmy-nominated comedic actress in history...and yet oddly, has almost NO success in films. But hey...know, and stay, in your lane!!
@Tony-dc8dt I was essentially ADDING to your discussion. But please do check your facts - I'm happy to argue with someone...but they need to get their facts straight... The new Adventures of Old Christine ran for 88 episodes...basically 4 seasons...
Wait...WHAT??? She was on an HBO series?? Which one??
And my comment said she did not have "it" on SNL. She didn't. I didn't say "doesn't".
She apparently does.
@Tony-dc8dt Hmmm...so now you're saying FIVE season....you're getting closer!!! Yes, PARTS of 5 seasons...but only 88 eps.
But you're wrong....very few shows actually premiere mid-season...so it IS uncommon. And also NOPE...writer's strikes ARE actually uncommon...6 in 100 years!! Thanks for playing. Sort of...
Happy watching!
She never wrote her own material, but she has actually won awards for her work on sitcoms (i.e. Seinfeld, New Adventures of Old Christine, Veep).
This skit sucks.
