Van Gogh's story always breaks my heart. To quote the song by Don McLean, "Now I understand What you tried to say to me How you suffered for your sanity How you tried to set them free They would not listen, they did not know how Perhaps they'll listen now" His soul was not meant for this world or how it treated him. Dirt poor and broken in life, only to be venerated after death. Reminds us to see the beauty in others now, before they're gone.
Never thought about how the invention of gas lights influenced art until you mentioned it. Appreciate the historical context you intertwine in each discussion! Thank you, Jessica!
My only"Formal art training" was a College prep class in high school. You have a style of teaching that os organic that it plants seeds of inspiration in me. Thank you.
I absolutely adored this series. My favorite classes in college were humanities and being able to see these works of art and hearing more about them as well of the artists made my heart sing. Thank you Jessica for sharing your love of museums and art!
Thank you very much for the three most informative presentations. If your travels take you back to Canada I encourage you to do a presentation on the Art Gallery of Ontario. Thank you.
These are great videos. I was at the Musee D'Orsay last year and watching the video is reviving that wonderful experience., I wished I had listen to your videos before visiting. Please do a video on women artists. Thanks
I was here precovid of 2020, just to see the starry night over the rhone. I made sure it was here and was soooo excited. It was not there. It was packed up in the basement on its way on loan to boston. I cried much more than a grown woman should have. I have still never viewed it in person.
This has been a great series, I enjoyed visiting some old friends and seeing some new ones :) I'm very glad that I stumbled over your channel, I love art and museums. Thank you.
Thanks for this series Jessica. I always learn something new watching your series, despite having studied art! I really hope you do a series on women artists, especially those now somewhat forgotten. I will be waiting!
Ma’am thank you so much. I saw all 3 parts - this is amazingly you have captured with details. We will be there on 13th may would like to know a few things 1. First part you shoot in ground floor? 2nd part in 5th floor? How do we know which floor has which artist collection
The first floor is pre-impressionist and the 5th floor is Impressionism and post Impressionism. It’s very easy to understand when you get there! Thank you for watching. :)
The description of Van Gogh's severing of a part of his ear is inaccurate and incorrect. He didn't "cut off most of his ear" but a small part of it. And there's a much larger part of the story not included in this description.
Oh yes, it would take all day to tell the whole story! And I’ve always heard it as “most of his left ear.” You can see the description here- I’m inclined to trust the experts at The Courtauld! courtauld.ac.uk/highlights/self-portrait-with-bandaged-ear/
New evidence has also come to light, it appears. Though Theo said it was “just the lobe,” his doctor recorded it as the entire ear. www.lib.berkeley.edu/about/news/van-Gogh-ear#
I didn’t realise there was so much debate- an entire book was written on the topic! It seems it was indeed nearly the entire ear. www.theartnewspaper.com/2020/04/17/did-van-gogh-cut-off-his-whole-ear-or-only-a-part
How come most of these paintings were really big or small... I didn't realize that the Mona Lisa was a small/medium painting and it got stolen... twice...I happen to like Starry Night and the Mona Lisa (I know she's in the Louvre) You know that they made a movie with Kirk Douglas... I don't understand why he would cut off his ear 👂 I know it's madness but that's crazy...Jean Marie Calmont who lived to 122 yrs old knew Van Gogh and she is to have said that he smelled like paint and she didn't care for him
I am realy curious about the painter, Why some of their work is took years even decades to finish, while other just need minutes, like picaso or dali, yah their painting is suck, but why they decide to call it finished at the frist place 🤔.
@@TheMuseumGuide hemmm, I am realy curious about mark rothko controversy, did you ever saw one of his painting ?, Did it like what they said rothko paint in 3d ?🤔
Canadian French! 🤣 but thank you- as a west coast Canadian who speaks French at a kindergarten level, this is about as good as things are going to get.
Thanks. I love art history. Just a note trying to help: Your reference pictures are often incorrect. I'll give one example. 11:25 VG didn't paint 2 of those "self-portraits". This is a good channel and because of that, you're going to get nitpickers like me. Aren't museums great?
This has made me giggle - I like your style. Good eye! This one was a premade collage- I must admit, I didn’t even notice. However, I knowingly used a different one he didn’t paint because it was too perfect. ;) I knew someone would spot it. You say often- did I mess up any other times?
@@TheMuseumGuide You never " mess up". You're lovely. Making these videos is the hard part. You're really nailing that. The easy part is fact-checking reference photos and stuff. I'll leave that to you. And enough with me picking nits xxx.

It’s so devastating. He was such a tortured soul.

With modern art, it's always about the idea and less about the technique.

Chucky.
A brave and appreciated attempt at proper French pronunciations.
Review, however, the names Degas and Monet.
Not day-GAH
Not moe-NAY

A clean house is nowhere a place for children ?.
Not sure what you’re referring to?
While I appreciate the suggestion to make a reservation at the cafe, they don't take reservations now.
