yeah, Ive been in search for some watercolors so ive been watching reviews and all kind of info about different brands and stuff, finally I decided to order the 18 tube set from holbein and that 6 tube set of mineral colors from daniel smith, cant wait to try them out, your videos have been really helpfull
I already asked a pal of mine last year and he sent me the watercolor sketching set from the Ghibli Museum! They have discontinued some of the colors the set originally had a few years ago. Here's the colors for the new set for those taking notes (and this comes from my own set I received from the museum)! 1. Crimson Lake (W 010) 2. Opera (W 013) 3. Vermillion Hue (W 019) 4. Yellow Ochre (W 034) 5. Permanent Yellow Lemon (W 035) 6. Permanent Yellow Deep (W 037) 7. Permanent Yellow Orange (W 038) 8. Yellow Grey (W 151) 9. Viridian Hue (W 061) 10. Permanent Green No. 1 (W 066) 11. Cadmium Green Deep (W 070) 12. Bamboo Green (W 078) 13. Cobalt Blue Hue (W 091) 14. Cerulean Blue (W 092) 15. Ultramarine Deep (W 094) 16. Compose Blue (W 096) 17. Prussian Blue (W 097) 18. Lavender (W 116) 19. Bright Violet (W 175) 20. Light Red (W 130) 21. Burnt Umber (W 133) 22. Burnt Sienna (W 134) 23. Davy's Grey (W 155) 24. Ivory Black (W 138)
the colors you mixed at the end were so cool! I would never had thought of mixing some of those together and the blooming that happens when mixing with these paint are so pretty ♡♡
Thank you Mateusz for sharing & showing Miyazaki's color palette of watercolors. Its interesting he used Hoblein watercolors as I have a collection of Holbein watercolors. Fascinating to use & work with Miyazaki's choice of Holbein color, his color palette. I noted you added Perm. Green No. 3, Colbalt Green Yellow Shade & Violet grey. My curiousity to use those colors in my watercolor paintings. I love Miyazaki's amazing works, I watch his anime, & collected his art books.
You mixed the discontinued permanent green number 3 and the cobalt green yellow shade pretty close. However, having used the elusive violet gray that was discontinued back in the 1990s I can tell you that one looks nothing like the violet gray water color. It was much more similar to a light gray mixed with opera than what was shown here.
Ohh nooo why did I see this! Now I'm gona have to make a Miyazaki palette to play with. I already have a million palettes and now I'm gona make one more lol
Loved it, and wondered the same myself( about his palette) so thank you for sharing your experiment! I have been to Japan TWICE and TWICE I missed out going to the ghibli museum - I plan to sneak over to Japan next year and the museum is at the top of my list!
I, too will have to see about setting this one up XD I'm really excited to see your paintings using this color selection! Thank you so much for sharing this knowledge! :)
Amazing mixes ! Thank you so much, that was very instructive. I am in love with Holbein watercolors. I like very much that you showed us the proportion in your color mixing. Very beautiful and inspiring, as always 😊
Thank you so much I've always been curious about the palette that Miyazaki uses his color choices are always so nice. I am still new to watercolors so I might use this to create a palette someday.
This is sooo interesting! I love seeing other peoples palettes because ai think it tells a lot about the person and what kind of pictures they make. How lucky you are that you can try out a true master's chosen palette!
This is artistic gold. Thanks for sharing all of your hard won research. Good artists tend to be very generous with their knowledge... good on you Matt!
!! Excellent! I made a list a short while ago, and at the time that I made it, Cobalt Green was a part of the set of 24 that one could buy from HWC (not the Ghibli set)... I do not know if that's changed. For anyone looking for the Nicker Poster Colour (and TMK paper), a friend just spent a couple of hours at Sekaido for me this past Sunday (18 June, '17), and was not able to find either (no pads or sheets of TMK, no set of 24 of the 40 ml Nicker) and the staff was uncertain if they would have either for some time, if at all. I remain hopeful. Sigh... (they also didn't seem to carry the artetje 9XX series! ???) As ever Mateusz, thanks for the time and effort you put into all of your videos. They're a great share.
Did a little more work on my set, and if you buy the Holbein watercolor set of 24 that is currently shipped, then you will need to get another 9 (or mix) to re-create Miyazaki's set. These 9 are Opera, Permanent Yellow Orange, Permanent Green 3, Cadmium Green Deep, Davys Gray, Violet Gray, Vermilion (replace the Vermilion Hue), Bright Violet (replace the Mineral Violet), and Cobalt Green Yellow Shade (replace Cobalt Green) :-) Best to all.
I loved it!! I think it's a very good idea (also original) and very kind of you to share it ^^ I'm super glad I found your channel because I admire your watercolors from a long time ago. I really love how you use the colors and how you mix them. It would be great if you make that same video about you, your most used colors, your on-the-go colors, etc.
I will be making watercolour tutorial / tips videos soon so stay tuned! But I consider colour mixes as a kind of trade secret of watercolours so I will not give out all of them probably ;)
Mixes are beautiful, I have impression you can mih any two or three colors and get singing transparency muted palet, not dirtiness. O am waiting foe box of Holbein colors to try and choose my pallet.
AH!!! Thank you so much for this amazing video!! I've always loved Miyazaki's color schemes because they just seem so natural. His colors are always peaceful and calming.😌 I definitely didn't need another watercolor palette, but I'm pretty sure this one will have to join my collection soon.😂😅💜
this is really great. it's nice to see a "master" using a lot of different colors if that makes sense- I do like using limited palettes and I know it creates cohesion in a work but usually you see more famous folk with a focus on a very limited palette. I can tell from the fotos of miyazaki you put in your video that he's actually using a big and varied palette. thanks for sharing!
That is a very pretty palette. I had no idea that Miyazaki had a particular set of colours. I heard the background artist uses Nicker poster paints. Have you used these paints before?
Background artists (like Oga Kazuo for example) use NICKER poster colours but they are more similar to gouache than to watercolours. I have a set and use them sometimes: mateuszurbanowicz.com/concept-background-01 or mattjabbar.tumblr.com/post/142296121916/this-is-a-study-i-did-recently-while-resting-a
Since you have used both the poster color and gouache, would you say they are similar enough to produce very similar results? Or would you suggest to get the NICKER if someone wanted to create backgrounds like Ghibli does?
I think they are similar, just the poster colors are maybe a little bit inferior but cheaper. I prefer acrylic gauche for my opaque paint paintings so maybe that’s when it don’t really like poster colors so much ;)
Regular gouache isn't fadeproof, let alone waterproof, so it tends to be used for commercial illustration where printing of the artwork is necessary. I'm sure acrylic-based gouache solves those issues very well for those that want permanency.
I have the original palette sold in the Ghibli Museum but I'm running out of some of the colours that are discontinued, and now I know how to recreate them, thank you! I bought the Holbein 48 set a couple of years ago and it also has some grate shades :)
i follow your work by your web site and i love it! your watercolor are magical and wonderful! i am a miyazaki's fan too. i love his movies and his art. my favorite movie is castle in the sky! gretting for France! sorry for the mystakes i don't speak english.
Great video ! :) The mixes a the end are very intersting, i saw some green mix that were really wonderful ! Can't wait to see what you are gong to paint with this palette. Thanks again for your work :)
Mateusz you are great! Both, great artist and great guy. Thanks for the knowledge and inspiration. Multiple likes from me. Keep up the great work and take care. Djordje
I love the palette and the mixed paint you made at the end! I wander if you could maybe do a video of art stores in tokyo (not sure where you're located) that would sell holbein watercolours? I'm visiting tokyo later this year, and would love to get my hands on a holbein set... so any recommended art stores?
Dear Mateusz, I’m really amazed about this lovely and very insightful tutorial. After a while, I’m starting to ask myself the logical behind the color position. I would like to ask il your opinion, because after trying to figure it out, I’ve just lose myself in (just if you find interesting the matter). Thank you very much indeed, Mia.
I guess this just depends on the person. I like to put similar colors next to each other (this going from bright to dark) so when I paint the color pollution from neighboring colors is not so big. Mateusz Urbanowicz Oh, it have to be true, it’s depend on the personal feeling, and habit; in plain air should be different than in studio, and the light it’s so fast changing (also the mood). Yes, I will be starting new illustration series soon so I will be uploading more prints. I'm also planning a store with originals so please stay tuned!
I love how he says "Welcome to my next video" every time. I really do feel welcomed haha!
"pernament" AWWW I LOVE YOU
Thank you ! I did not notice that I do this.
Ive saw this video like 5 times and didnt notice that untill I read your comment, lol
You saw it 5 times? Thank you :)
yeah, Ive been in search for some watercolors so ive been watching reviews and all kind of info about different brands and stuff, finally I decided to order the 18 tube set from holbein and that 6 tube set of mineral colors from daniel smith, cant wait to try them out, your videos have been really helpfull
Glad to hear it! I hope you will like them like I do.
Awwwwww I have been to Japan and the Ghibli museum TWICE now and didn't know they sold a watercolor set there!! *crying*

the colors you mixed at the end were so cool! I would never had thought of mixing some of those together and the blooming that happens when mixing with these paint are so pretty ♡♡
I love watching paint mixing videos in the morning
What a wonderful video idea! Thanks for sharing!🌱
Thank you for sharing... love your mix!~
LOVE the way you mix paste with a palette knife instead of brush.
That is the correct way to do it.
WELL DONE
What a beautiful homage to Miyazaki. This palette is a beautiful selection of color. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you Mateusz for sharing & showing Miyazaki's color palette of watercolors. Its interesting he used Hoblein watercolors as I have a collection of Holbein watercolors. This was so helpful. Thanks for coming up with it. Brilliant post.
I was SO HAPPY to find my local art shop (family owned) still had the discontinued shades 🥰 Got them all!
Very good video and easy to understand, thank you
informative and very clear. thank you for demonstrating the colors at the end, very helpful comparison.

EZENAMI I so hear you... why is it so hard to resist new palettes? And Miyazaki's palette?? I'm a lost case.
Yes! Doomed!! Me too!
EZENAMI hey guys!! im a starting yt acc and i would appreciate it A LOT if yall could check it❤️ thx!
I was just thinking the same thing!

I highly recommend the Ghibli museum!
If you buy the museum watercolour set, go to an art store and buy the six colours for the mixes :)
Thank you for this! I love Holbein watercolors.
it's very expensive, but holbein makes amazing pigments. thanks for this!
What an interesting video. Thank you for doing the research for this video
I, too will have to see about setting this one up XD
I'm really excited to see your paintings using this color selection! Thank you so much for sharing this knowledge! :)
Eve! I want to see it if you end up making this! :D
@Grace Blosser, noted!! It's on my "to do eventually" list ;)
Yay! Would love to see you do some Ghibli inspired paintings if you want to!
This is so refreshing and helpful. Thank you for sharing!
Amazing mixes ! Thank you so much, that was very instructive. I am in love with Holbein watercolors. I like very much that you showed us the proportion in your color mixing. Very beautiful and inspiring, as always 😊

i must have watched this video at least 10 times! it was so helpful in creating my own version. thank you for inspiring me
I'm officially in love. Subscribed.
Count on Miyazaki to be one of the few to recommend having opera in your set. :)
Because illustrators and animators doesn't care about lightfastness issues ( which makes perfect sense)
i've watched this video several times already and i'm quite excited for the part 2!!! ♡
Thank you, I'm still in the house-moving frenzy but I will do it soon.
This is very informative and enjoyable to watch. I will be binge watching all your videos. Great work
Please make part 2! I love this
wonderful video!
i love love love your videos. thank you.
your recipe to replace missing color are so clever!

this is very pleasing to see. SUBSCRIBED!
Very great video ! I hope to have the chance to use the same tools as Hayao miyazaki, Kazuo Oga and you one day !
Youre the best I love this video it's so wholesome
AH!!! Thank you so much for this amazing video!! I've always loved Miyazaki's color schemes because they just seem so natural. His colors are always peaceful and calming.😌 I definitely didn't need another watercolor palette, but I'm pretty sure this one will have to join my collection soon.😂😅💜

This is awesome!! thank you!!
I love Opera rose and cerulean blue! :D
When you set those paint tubes down in the video, because it is so sped up, it makes the most satisfying sound EVER.
really excited to see you use this palette !!
I'm exciting to use it, I just have to find it in all the house-moving boxes!
good luck! I hope the move goes well, and that you'll have an inspiring view and an interesting neighbourhood

Lovely video!
*checks prices* ... *checks wallet* ... *cries
Serpentine Saltern how much is it I’ve been trying to search for prices all over :’)
Lmao I didn’t even need to check my wallet
Bel Mervyn From a blog I found, the Ghibli Museum set is about $65 USD.
I think you can still get away with a more limited palette.
Amazon has Holbein watercolors for relatively cheap! Hope this helps
Mateusz you are great! Both, great artist and great guy. Thanks for the knowledge and inspiration. Multiple likes from me. Keep up the great work and take care.
Djordje
haha your accent is cute! been looking into this kind of pallete and I love the brilliant pink. so cute
So prettyyyy 😍
I love the palette and the mixed paint you made at the end! I wander if you could maybe do a video of art stores in tokyo (not sure where you're located) that would sell holbein watercolours? The best place to go that sells a lot of supplies us the Sekaido store in Shinjyuku! But you can buy Holbein watercolors in most art stores in Japan.
wow! thank you so much for your reply! I'll go and check that out for sure!!!
Thank you for sharing this! I've always wondered what Studio Ghibli's staple palette was
Oh hey I use Holbein! That's a good start.
Would you be able to make a video about the brush(es) Miyazaki uses? And/or about Japanse brushes in general? Thanks
I'm talking a bit about this in part 2 ruclips.net/video/xz8V-re1j8A/видео.html&ab_channel=MateuszUrbanowicz
I've just bought another set of watercolours >w< but I do have some of the colours.. anyway, you've earned a sub, looking forward to more :3
That tiny palette knife!
Very cool!! ;D
This is sooooo cool😃😃
Awesome!
What is the metal stick you used to mix the paints called?
Thank you!!!
Dear Mateusz, I’m really amazed about this lovely and very insightful tutorial. After a while, I’m starting to ask myself the logical behind the color position. I’ve translate in my language (Italian) the booklet page with his advice to the beginner, mostly children. Is this logical more useful for them, I suppose. He start with Crimson Lake, a cold dark color, soon put another cold bright Opera and then a Vermillion, bright and warm. The palette is not separate in warm and cold tone, and doesn’t start with a usual light to dark shade, it’s mysterious to me.
I would like to ask il your opinion, because after trying to figure it out, I’ve just lose myself in (just if you find interesting the matter).
Thank you very much indeed,
Mia.
I guess this just depends on the person. I like to put similar colors next to each other (this going from bright to dark) so when I paint the color pollution from neighboring colors is not so big. If you put color according to their warmth you can end up with very different colors next to each other.
Mateusz Urbanowicz
Oh, it have to be true, it’s depend on the personal feeling, and habit; in plain air should be different than in studio, and the light it’s so fast changing (also the mood). That’s why Sensei decided the palette that way, for sketch outdoor.
I found interesting the way to have a clear and recognisable style even if subject change quite often, and actually it’s everything about light. But explain light it’s matter of master.
Thank you very much indeed, Mateusz.
Does anyone know the Winsor and Newton equivalent of Hayao Miyazaki's paint set? Winsor and Newton is the only artists' quality paint around my area. ;(
Can you do a video about using the color when painting ? I am still struggle to find the colors that work to together
I will be doing watercolour tutorial videos so please stay tuned!
Thank you very much for this video: I love it!!!! :-)
Suscribed!
Great video. I love explanations and the mixes. Do you have a blog where u post your mixes?
I have a website at mateuszurbanowicz.com and also a blog link there. I have a Tools section there also, have a look :)
Cool!
Hi. Do you think I can learn how to paint with watercolor?
You think poster color is better than water color? What’s the poster color you recommend?
It’s different, it paints more like gouache - it would probably make more sense to compare it to gouache. Hmm, I would go for Nicker as it’s used by animation studios.
I’ve watched your procreate videos and got your brushes. Do you have a palette in procreate based on this?
RUclips should make an "LOVE" button for this video. "Like" is not enough.
Does anyone know if they still sell this in the museum? Planning to go to Japan within the next 3 months
I wish the list you made matched the order you put the colors in, in the case
Still, thanks for listing the colors!
Will you put up prints of some of your more recent pieces on your store any time soon? Your art is really an inspiration
Yes, I will be starting new illustration series soon so I will be uploading more prints. I'm also planning a store with originals so please stay tuned!
you are legend also quailty of your videos are awesome same gose for your english :)
Thank you!
