The comparison of utilizing a digital camera for this to how Polaroids were employed was so on point. That’s all it is, a “scrap” version of the shot and for decades that was an option. Using a digital camera in 2021 is just the equivalent.

As someone who isn't a professional photographer, and shoots film exclusively as a hobby, the idea that people would get upset that a digital camera is apart of your process seems so silly to me. Like, at the end of the day what we are making is art. I'd be like claiming a painting is less genuine because you sketched it in pencil first.

I realise this video is a year old but since then I've had a few really great sessions doing this technique, definitely wanna keep it going.
One question I had was the Vision 4 trigger doesn't fire on some bodies despite there being a hot shoe. For example, my Fuji GSW690ii only fires the flash using the sync cord connected to the trigger. Did you ever have this problem or does it sound like maybe I have a few issues with those bodies?
Thanks again for this video and the bag one, both really inspiring and were great to rewatch.

Thanks so much for this video. I've been wanting to grab a portable strobe and this recommendation for the Vision 4 is ideal. Plus I love the idea of using a digital body to nail in settings to transfer to the film body. I'm absolutely all for these tutorial videos, they are great to watch but also I've learnt too!

  • @dan_s_higginson

You can also meter in daylight by taking a reading of ambient, deciding how you want the ambient to look. For example, let’s say 1 stop darker than flash. Now, use these setting to dial in your flash. Remember, you might need to use high-speed sync if you’re max sync speed is slow.

Advice to everyone reading this: Do your process however is best & easiest for you. Don't worry about what others may think, because they don't matter one damn. We got rid of the snobby elitists for a while there, let's keep that up. Just because someone doesn't agree with your method, doesn't mean you're doing anything wrong. Ignore them & make your work however the hell you want. There is no one right way. 👍🏻

Altrough 1/250s on RTS III is 4X faster then 1/60s on RTS old and II, is still not enough for fill light in day light with open aperture so as to blur the crap in the background, for which you need HSS.
Contax omited a dedicated FP flat peak sync even on RTS old and II, even though Canon F1, Nikon F2 ( Not F3) , Minolta XM, and Pentax LX had FP sync up to 1/2000s (and 1/1000s for MX and K series except K1000) with obsolete long burning one use flat peak bulbs, and Contax RTS old and II can use FP sync only forced and up to only 1/30s so not even 1/60s. In 1986 Olympus OM4TI - still with obsolete cloth shutter, introduced the New FP sync that is HSS high speed sync up to 1/2000s with the dedicated F280 flash, with a burst flash in sync with the moving slit. But in 1990 when RTS III was released was too soon for HSS even for other brands not just for Contax . Minolta has HSS from 1993 with 700si up to 1/8000s. ( so not with '92 9xi that has only up to 1/300 X sync, no HSS). Nikon had HSS only in '96, 10 years later after OM4Ti, with F5 @ SB26 ( up to 1/8000s), Canon had HSS even later in 2000 with eos 1V (third gen. eos 1, up to 1/8000s), and Pentax in 2001 with MZ-S ( MZ-S reach 1/6000s as Contax ST but HSS up to 1/4000s with a dedicated flash capable of HSS like 360 fgz). Contax doesn't have HSS, not even with the new AF mount in N1.
For dusk you can manage with 1/250s X sync, but anywey RTS III is the most unreliable pro camera, most of them just die, some electronic board, or at least the blue LEDs in viewfinder stop working.

A digital ' camera ' is just an imaging computer. What we achieve with a digital ' camera ' is CGI and not photography in its classic form. A procession of Zeros and Ones fed by the ADC unit to the microprocessors to reconstruct a version of perceived reality. Even the dreaded term ' digital iso ' is not what it seems, as the sensitivity of the sensor to light of different wavelengths is a fixed value per wave length of light, and can not be altered.

I think some people are a bit too precious when it comes to 'the analogue process', especially when the first thing they do after producing a negative or print is to digitally scan it to stick on their 'social's. Using your Sony as a 'digital polaroid back' makes perfect sense . It's quick, practical and all-in-all better for the environment.

I don't have a tiny little mirrorless digital, I have a big heavy D7100, I don't have a car either so to need to carry around two cameras, 2-3 lenses, flash, stand, etc is a bit of a hassle. Plus I came here because I wanted to know how to actually properly meter for flash instead of just taking a bunch of pictures until something looks right and I basically got the exact same method id have done on digital regardless lol

I am an old timer, 40+ years in photography . You do not need expensive strobe lighting with 35 mm film or DSLRs. In the old times we used to prefer Tungsten lighting to strobes, for ease of use and much lower cost, albeit the use of a colour correction filter, or film balanced for 3400K lighting was required. One could learn to see what each light would do quite quickly. The strobes were the sole domain of Large Format studio product, still life or fashion photography where due to the inherent nature of very small apertures required and an almost mandatory use of 50~100 ASA transparency film, huge amount of light was required, and strobe lighting was the only way to get it. I still have a couple of my old Bowens Monoblock Gold and Silver units . They were hugely expensive, heavy and tricky to set up correctly, that is why we used Polaroid back on 4X5 or Hasselblads to check for lighting composition ( not for exposure as it has been incorrectly rumoured ). My advice is to keep on using continuous lighting and leave strobes alone.

  • @CalebDuplain

      @Drpftnst 2 года назад

@@christophseibel1765 well the thing is he doesnt have much control over the type of lighting hes getting. thats why there are so many different types of lighting modifiers and shoot through umbrellas are the least used ones. shoot through dont give the photographer as much room for creativity as would a more controlled light modifier. just because the photos look good doesnt mean thats a stopping point. theres always room for improvement.

Question: Dear Willem, I would love to start doing studio portraits using strobes with my Hasselblad 500cm. My question: Does the Neewer Vision 4 300W Outdoor Studio Flash Strobe that you seem to be using for the video works with the Hasselblad 500 cm. Sorry but I have tried with Pocket Wizard x plus but it is not working. I really love your videos. Jasmine

Hi Will, Im Tian from Bali. I am very inspired to your channel :)
regarding to this video, I have a questions which I hope you have the answer. I own a 35mm Ricoh A50 film camera, and I have a godox X1T (s) trigger, which I believe this trigger is specified for Sony camera. Do you have any recommendation of trigger that will work with my Ricoh A50? :)

my main concern is white balance when you use film stock, like vision3 250d

Hello!!! Wow the video!!! I have a mamiya 645 1000s, do you know what kind of model of transmitter and receiver could I use for my flashes kit? Thanks

what would ya'll say is the main difference between using a TTL flash versus a strobe light. I recently bought a nikon sb-18 for my fg and am thinking about buying a strobe light as well but would like to know the difference.

Will the Neewer Vision4 work with any film camera with a hotshoe including the 1976 Canon AE-1 and onwards ?

Thanks for this. I've been using my Ricoh GR as a light meter for my old Mamiya TLR C3, and now I don't feel so guilty about it. Love your results, great pics.

What is the problem measuring with the sekonic? It has the “flash” mode and the ambient light does not affect it (in fact it should just get added to the flash light with no problem). Also, I would worry more using a digital camera because the light captured get processed by internal algorithms, so I would think it is less precise the the external light meter. What do you think?

What's so Controversial about using a digital camera to test exposure with? It's 2021 for crying in the mud! Film is Wicked Expensive! I use an RB67. Same format to your Mamiya 7 Willem (as you know). That means we get 10 shots per roll. I'm not out to just Spend film for the sake of some deep, profound belief that digital is evil. Most film shooters use some Digital medium to scan their film shots after all. I want to Know that if I take a bad shot on Film, it'll be because I caved on nailing the creative end and took the shot anyways. Experimentation is only worth so much to me I suppose. Regardless, Great stuff Willem!

Can you maybe do a video on how you shoot and meter with your mamiya and your nikon speedlight flash? I was watching your video where you were photographing in the snow using your nikon speedlight flash and I was just wondering how you meter for that kind of photography. Do you use your sekonic handheld lightmeter?

Cool video man, you should just get a light meter that can measure flash so you don't need to use your digital camera

Naw people that think using your digital camera to meter for strobe is controversial are dumb asf, I do it all the time and the last thing I want is to chance it. ESPECIALLY if it’s with a full team that put in their time and talent to make the shoot happen.

The flash sync speed on my analog camera is 1/60. Does that mean all the shots taken with a flash or strobe must be that speed? And that i adjust the aparture accordingly?

Yea the purist thing. Just chill nothing wrong with using digital cameras especially to get exposure for film it’s a win win situation. Just one thing you may have to use a full frame sensor. Because I’ve done tests at home and crop sensor at same settings let’s in less light then full frame and the film May be hot depending on what film you are using.

Do you use the same iso as on the film ? Also I have a rangefinder that blocks the shutter button if the light meter doesn’t read any light, I can see an issue for me if my camera needs light to even take a picture. Would it be the case that I wouldn’t be able to use flash at night or dusk like in this video ?

Hey! I shoot on an old Leicaflex SL that doesn't have a hot shoe. Any advice you can give? I got a flash cable to hot shoe adapter, but I can never get the flash to fire.

I use a Sekonic FLASHMATE to measure for flash. No need for a digital camera and the results are reliable. The digital camera method works too though and I sometimes use it.
