Digital Realty CTO weighs in on AI's insatiable thirst for power

  • It's no secret, by this point, that the GPUs used to train and run generative AI models are power hungry little beasts. So hungry in fact that by some estimates, datacenter could consume 9% of US electricity output by 2030.
    In light of this explosive growth, some have warned that AI infrastructure could drain the grid.
    Chris Sharp, CTO at colocation provider Digital Realty, is well aware of the challenges associated with accommodating these workloads and talks about it all with The Register's Systems Editor, Tobias Mann, here.

    curtailing power draw is one thing, but building nuclear generators on site sounds like it requires a little bit of deeper discussion.... its interesting how you kind of snuck that in there though ;)
