  • Per a viewer request, I briefly review the leg pouches I used for backpacking while rehabilitating a back and nerve injury. These drop leg bags allowed me to backpack and hike by minimizing the strain on my back.
They were originally for military and utility use.

It's great you found a way to redistribute weight and continue backpacking. That's an amazing success! A couple questions:
-How much of a noticeable impact do the leg pouches have on your efficiency? Typically applying weight to a moving leg comes with a greater efficiency cost (like pedals vs frame on a bike), but wondering if it's not so pronounced because it's up high and not subject to much
-They come off as a bit overbuilt for hiking use. If you had the option, would you go for a less durable but lighter option?

@@sanfransimo Hi, interesting question. Frankly, I've not thought about hiking "efficiency" and would probably have to revisit them. They do lower your center of gravity and are cumbersome in the fact that you have to get used to having something sticking 4-5" inches from your legs ie perhaps a wider tracking with trekking polls but I'm not sure I felt they were less efficient. I'd really have to do some repeated hikes with and without.
I never felt they interfered with my hike and never felt I needed to adjust my biomechanics in anyway. If that all makes sense. That said, logically, it probably slowed my leg swing, stepping cadence but again, I was coming from nothing so... I'd have to take them out now and compare as I said earlier.
Over built for hiking? Yeah, probably. Over built for backpacking? Absolutely not. They brush up against rocks and trees and stuff. If you look closely in the video, you'll see some wear. I think because they are on your legs they're more prone to wear than say a backpack. Inside the pockets could have been made with thinner material though.
Hope that helps! Thanks for watching!
