"I think, therefore I am" simply means that there has to be something to exist in order to think that it exists. It doesn't really have all that much to do with the line between AI and humanity.

First of all, top quality editing. I know the time it takes to edit something like this and your dedication shows.
Now, I think you have a misconception on Motoko Kusanagi's nature. She is as human as you and I are, as in her brain is organic, natural-born. The rest of her body is mechanic, "robotic" in a way. The movie touches on this duality of human-capacity mind in a machine-capacity body, with its climax manifested in the merging of human and machine to create the ultimate organism in nature. The AI gnostic allegory is barely touched (Project 2501).
Most of the things you talked about in the video are true, but the movie is not the best example for it. Stand Alone Complex is a better iteration of the gnostic allegory in AI, with the Tachikomas and all.
All in all it's nice to hear your thoughts on stuff like this. You're a youtuber worth subscribing for.

Ghost in the Shell, ahead of its time? No, not even close. Even by the time the original manga was published, all the themes it touched had already been repeated so much they had become standard sci-fi cliches. The only reason why people like this franchise is because it is as close to being hardcore hentai as a mainstream non-pornografic manga and anime can get. Don't believe me? Motoko getting hurt and destroyed, in brutal ways, wearing tight clothing or just plain naked is so common it is to be expected in every single GITS piece of media. Let's not deceive ourselves: this is why we like Ghost in the Shell, not its pretentious sophomoric pseudo-philosophy. We clamour for this kind of sexual violence and we love it.

I have to disagree. GITS is highly influential because of the whole approach. Every scene and image was very well calculated. The whole atmosphere and imagery of future japan is incredibly well made, with attention to every detail from the streets and the music and everything.
This movie has a sense of purpose behind each and every scene, like it is moving towards some meaningful direction. This is true for all the little things and at the same time the plot as a whole. Philosophically it was not ahead of its time, sure, but the integration of all the ideas, the imagery and the philosophy was done masterfully. I've never seen any other movie nearly as well done.
People often say that Gibson got so many things right with his sprawl trilogy. For me it's Ghost in the Shell that has a very accurate description of the dynamics of human society and how this along with technological advancements transforms us and will transform us in the future. The future struggles and troubles of both man and society are described incredibly well.
GITS has always been about constructing a world of the future as accurately and as in-depth as possible. This is contrary to most sci-fi movies that just give you some short idea and a little atmosphere. It does it better than any science fiction movie i've ever watched.
If you focus on Motoko getting hurt and her near naked body as a major reason people watch this movie, well i feel bad for you. People like this movie for its imagery, its amazing attention to detail, the atmosphere, how they managed to combine all these things so well..

why'd you get rid of the video this is why we can't have good anime?

  • @crazycrazyjake

Unless it's in the largely unused and relative term meaning knowledge (gnosis), this video, while interesting, has nothing to do with Gnostic "religious" ideas.
Likewise GITS as a film, in it's themes, ideas, plot, and dialog( in English or Japanese) has nothing to do with Gnostic teaching. . .
Which is good because Gnosticism proper, and the so-called "gnostic gospels" are completely useless, false-histrorical bullshit akin to the absurd prank that is the LDS Book or Mormon. I seriously doubt that if Oshii were adopting any specific theological ideas during production of this film that they would have been from the then utterly unknown and still least of considering.
So... cool video, just correct the title. Its is AI Theory to be sure, however there is zero Gnostic allegory to be found anywhere in the film.
