  • If you know me, you know I love power, especially versatile USB power, and the new ZGCine X99 has it in spades! Not just a v-mount battery, but a USB battery bank with loads of power and 100W of output! And with all these upgrades, there's really no reason for a base plate/cheese plate anymore for a variety of setups. And for me, less is more! But will it stand up to some long term testing? What about grossly irresponsible long term testing? Let's find out!

Hi Wes, do you know much about the validity of judging battery cells by brand?
I have heard that for the rechargeable NiMH AA batteries, Sanyo/Panasonic does a good job (under the “Eneloop” brand).
Recently at NAB, SWIT made a big deal about its new Omni batteries and how they’re a seasoned battery manufacturer (vs other brands just getting into doing batteries) and if I remember right, they use Sanyo cells.
While the new Smallrig 212 with DSLRvideoshooter that apparently has LG cells.
Batteries seem like a black box. Wondering if there’s a way to figure out loosely which ones are worth looking into, which ones are just hype or overpriced.

There is Some merit to evaluating by brand, but it's no guarantee, and it's an incredibly complicated rabbit hole to get into. For instance: Sanyo was the original manufacturer of Eneloop batteries. They gained a great deal of respect for this endeavour and Panasonic really wanted that skill and market appeal, so they bought the tech off Sanyo, and continued onward from there. Sanyo appears to have regretted this, and many years later dug back into the battery scene (they're sort of in a partnership, but also sort of not).
I don't know much about LG as a battery brand.
But at the same time, any manufacturer is capable of making a mediocre battery, if specced as such by an OEM. Similarly, a random brand is also perfectly capable of sourcing wholesale components to produce a high quality battery as an off-brand. Although they rarely do, as smaller brands are well aware the consumers have very short memories, and even shorter expectations for the life of a product.

Hi Wes, I would like to ask you why my ZG-X99 battery won't turn on my Hollyland Mars M1 monitor. The monitor has a DC input in 7-16V/2A. when I insert the D-TAP cable into the monitor input, the D-TAP writing flashes in the battery but the amperes are always at zero, therefore it does not give a charge. Thank you, Luigi

Hmmm could be a polarity mismatch? Not sure…

Hello Wes, thank you for your video.
I bought the Clobor 220R and 120R for my small studio and they are fantastic lights :) Thank you for your video and advices.
I wanted to know if the ZGine X99 could be suitable for my Colbor lights ?
There are plenty of other choices of Vmount batteries but I'm a little lost and these Zgcine X99 seems really good.
    👍

You could use a cheaper v-mount battery for this, as all you need is the Colbor D-Tap adapter to run from the battery, but this one works for it as well. This adds a bunch of other bells and whistles that are nice to have on top of that ;)
Colbor lights only run at about 50% power when plugged into a battery, though.
